I love it! Well, I'm not an obsessive fan, but I do like the fact that we have a sport which is totally indecipherable to anyone outside the Test playing nations.
I would imagine there's no other sport with quite the same range of bizarre vocabulary. Googly = wrong'un Chinaman = left arm off spin I think Nightwatchman Pop crease Fielding positions include: wicketkeeper, slips, gully, silly mid off/on, third man, point.
Anyway, the first England vs New Zealand Test is on at Lords, and there's been some good cricket played recently. England almost whitewashed the West Indies, won 3, drew 1, lost 0. Murali (Muttiah Muralitharan) has broken the world record for Test wickets, but has been forced to give up his 'doosra'.
So, a cricket appreciation thread. Hands up if you have no clue what I'm talking about.

Yep, I love cricket too.
Have you noticed when a left handed and right handed batsman is at the crease batting together it makes the fielders run around like crazy after the batsmen have crossed. Must be annoying.
Pavement mentions a bit about cricket in Carrot Rope too: "The wicketkeeper is down!"
I played some cricket at school, it hurts like hell catching the ball. Having to wear a box was the last straw though, they had two or three to be shared amongst the whole team.

Yeah, that is a bit gross. I was never that good, I played once for my school against this posh private school, and we got soundly whipped. I lasted two whole balls. Whoopee.
Anyway, England are on 306 for 5, 80 behind. NZ have taken 3 wickets this morning, and seem to be doing alright. Nasser Hussain and Andy Flintoff are in at the moment, but Graham Thorpe just got out for a magnificent... 3.
Flintoff should be good value, he has a tendency to slog it.
One thing I noticed in SA: you see more British sport on TV than we do! How does that work?

I tried to figure it out by watching games on TV. (Couldn't)
-
A co-worker explained it to me. Several times. (Didn't get it)
-
Listened to "Cricket" by the Kinks a few times. (Helped with some terms)
-
Watched some Baliwood movie about cricket. (Got it!)

They play cricket in Bali?
I'm sure the Kiwis are praying for Flintoff to get out.
So much British sport on TV? Satelite! Probably because we're more or less in the same time zone, the fans love watching sport "live". Also we enjoy the same kinds of sport. I know the FA cup will draw a huge audience today.

Yep, I'll be watching that, although I never thought I'd see myself supporting Millwall. Brief introduction to Millwall for non-afficionados: their most famous song says 'No-one likes us/We don't care'; they have officially the most violent, hooligan-esque fans in the country; they have never been in a Cup final before; because Man U have already qualified for the European Cup, Millwall automatically get a UEFA cup place. Europe is literally quaking in its boots...
Anyway, back to cricket. England's traditional middle order collapse didn't come about completely, and they're now on 410-6, so ahead of NZ. Flintoff's still in, which should be good for a laugh.
I think some cricketing terms are good ones to throw into a conversation to completely bemuse people, so take note: "bowled him a googly" = confused him "hit for six" = knocked out, sort of

Used to hate it but my time in Oz made me appreciate it. I really enjoy watching a good game of cricket now. Has to be a good one though. When it's bad, it's very bad.

I don't know about that, but I was swimming in Bali once.
I know nothing about cricket, by the way. I'm an ignorant American, and I don't like sports (or sport, if you prefer; the British apparently took the S from the end and added it to "math") anyway.

I love cricket.
wish i was able to watch more of the test, but my wife won't let me.... but we (NZ) are fighting back now.... we'll get a lead of 350, declare and bowl the english out for 150.
wilhelm, did ya watch the super 12 final this morning? what a joke the first 19 minutes were...33-0 down...what the fuck. over the game, the crusaders totally outplayed the brumbies, but no way were they ever going to catch them up....did fucking well to get to 47-38.

Good, NZ is fighting back. I watched McCullum batting, he is doing well. Tomorrow should be good.
Aye Benji, I saw a bit of the Crusaders going down. I don't like the Brumbies at all (they robbed Rathbone from us). The Brumbies had a few lucky wins this season which earned them the home final, them playing the final at home made all the difference. Maybe next year I'll see one of the local teams in the final.

Oh yeah, I meant to ask. Rathbone was the guy that could have played for Oz or SA right? Who did he choose?

I think baseball ranks with any sport in the arena of funky terms. Americans use baseball terms every day whether describing events on the field or off. A few of my fave baseball terms: eephus pitch spitball fungo uncork (a wild pitch) floater Baltimore chop
Here is an online encyclopedia of over 5,000 baseball terms: http://www.enlexica.com/sp/bb/ |

Rathbone has chosen Australia. They are paying better. He has a girlfriend there.

No, they don't mention him getting more money in Aus. Some of the articles I've checked mention that the SA rugby union offered him a better deal than the Aus rugby union. I'll change my post above.
I'm not too certain how much the players get paid here but I know they've changed all the contracts recently. They only get loads of money if they win their games.

Congratulations England by the way. It was touch and go, they needed 274 to win, and win they did by seven wickets. Sorry Benji.

To support BTL about colorful baseball terms. Here is one of favorite quotes. Classic use of language. It's from Ed Lynch a pitcher in the 80s:
"The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby."

I can't take the tension, I really can't, I think this is going to be another thriller. If it goes down to a to-the-wire finish on Monday, I think I'll be crying before the session is up.

It's good isn't it :D In the pub last night there were cries of "come on the Ozzies" (as well as much hilarity at the England result). I genuinely want England to win this, they've been the better team and could have had it wrapped up already.
If Trescothick could have stayed in it could have been a big score, now England need Strauss to dig in and get a ton.

Strauss got a lucky break there. Looked as if he edged it, but the Australians didn't appeal convincingly.

This is fascinating stuff. England wobbling a bit, the Australians with their tails up.
Player of the series has to go to either Flintoff or Warne. (Warne just dropped an easy catch :D)

This is altogether too tense. I was fine this morning, but having worked out the maths with a colleague, I'm frightened again. What injustice it would be to lose the series now...

I think you need to bat till tea to be pretty much safe. That last session would be awesome though. I think England have outplayed Australia in 3 out of the 5 Tests, but you have to win the Ashes.
Shane Warne is amazing. Brett Lee is looking good. McGrath is McGrath. The England top order gone. It is sport at its finest.
Incidentally, is this the longest sporting event between two teams in the world?
