I've just joined the forum so sorry if this has been done before.
Frank Black's lyrics are often quite strange and lend themselves easily to being misheard.
I thought for quite a long time that the good man who Frank meets at the beginning of 'Los Angeles' was 'selling insurance' rather than 'sailing and shoring'.
Also I just found yesterday that at the end of Fu Manchu, Frank doesn't sing 'Accidentally diktat' (whatever that means) but 'Occidentally tic-tac' (whatever that means).
Does anyone else have any mishearings? |

I've had a few, but I can't think of any now. I know Crackity Jones gave me a few. I also thought it was "selling insurance" in Los Angeles! In Fu Manchu, I thought it was "accidentally tic-tac". I didn't know it was "occidentally".....
It's getting colder.... |

i *always* thought, even after seeing the correct lyrics on the alec eiffel site, that at the start of bone machine, frank shouts "this is a song about a cow" hehe! i still do. you bastards trying to claim it's carol!? maybe carol is a cow? not the animal, just a nasty woman... who did frank wrong, so he refers to her as a cow?
Is it like today? Oh, oh, oh-oh. Then there followed days with kings, empires and revolutions. blood just looks the same when you open the veins. sometimes it was faith, power or reason as the cornerstone. but the furrowed brow has never left his face. he said, how did it come to this?

And I don't know if everybody does this or just me and my friends(and my daughter), but at the beginning of La La Love You we all yell "Chickenbutt".

I believe a similar thread about misheard lyrics came up a few months ago, and since then I can't sing Horrible day without inserting:
"It's a beautiful day, no it's a hard boiled egg"
Plus, I always thought that "Talking to Preachy Preach" was really "Talking to Peachy Peach". Weird, huh.

In Holiday song I have always knowm the right lyrics (at least for this part) but when I listened to it just a minute ago it sounded just like:
"Well sit right down my wicked son And let me tell you a story About the boy who fell from floor 1 And how he was a wicked son"

Someone here on the forum pretended (actually did? it sounded too good to be true) they heard, in "Nadine", instead of "Maybe we'll park/And I'll drive", "Maybe we'll fuck/Nine times", which I found outrageously funny for some reason. Now I hear that every time. Thank you, whoever you are.
(I would tell you who it was, if the search feature worked in this forum, which it never did, for me at least.)

Said it somewhere else but I'll share with you what I though the rock music lyrics were...
come out, come out, come out to play come out, come out, come out to play come on now you're letting go hey you want me introduce me come out, come on, lets play slag
which isn't as bad as my ex with his wave of ruminations... silly boy, he has no excuse, it's in the title of the song!

I always thought it was "I'm Sir Rockaby, I reckon I am,"
Oh, yeah, and before I heard Ole Mullholland, I thought it was pronounced "Ol' (as in old) Mullohand". Then I listened to it, and I was like "what the--?". [insert another smiley here] |

In I Gotta Move I always thought it was "he's not afraid of the presidents, and talking back is a bad offense" instead of "He's not afraid of the present tense, and talking back is a bad defense". I think it makes the guy he's talking about sound a lot cooler.

Gouge away. I thought it was: "You break my arms, you scoop my eyes", but of course it's "You break my arms, you spoon my eyes" which makes so much more sense... |

The Doolittle chord book has 'that the mother makes when the baby breaks' as 'that the mother makes when the baby cries' in Hey. That used to confuse me.

I thought Men In Black said "Are they grey or is it my own mission?" instead of "nation". I still sing it that way.

In WIMM I thought it was "With your feet on the floor" for some reason.
And In I Burn Today I thought it was "Yesterday I will burn" which doesn't make any sense either.

Me too on "Yesterday I will burn." For about a year, I held that up as a classic Frank Blackism, telling people how he had some really neat, quirky stuff like that in his language. Turns out I'm just an idiot.

I think a lot of people thought that, even though as you say, it doesn't make any sense. But then again, when has anything The Man has ever said made sense?

I too thought it was "Yesterday I Will Burn" until just now...I never even thought about how that didn't make sense...
I thought of this thread recently while reading Fool the World. Some critic is talking about Come On Pilgrim and the part of I've Been Tired where BF talks about "Losing my penis to a horrible disease." I was stunned. I always thought it was "a whore with disease", which really is a much better line. Was relieved when i checked the lyrics and saw that the critic had it wrong... (rarely is anyone happy about the presence of a whore with disease!) |

I recently had Planet of Sound on, and thought to myself: Did he just say "One fine day in my podcast"? It took me a minute to figure out that the song preceded podcasting by at least a decade and I was just hearing things again. Still, if there was ever a Pixies podcast, that song would be a great intro.

And don't ask me how this happened, but I thought the Pixies song "Silver" was "Sliver" until I just heard the cover on Podcast #18.
