i thought that this was a cover - seeing as it was originally in the david lynch movie. but on the DVD, it does not list this as being written by anyone apart from frank. so whats the story with the song?

Peter Ivers and David Lynch. Do you not read liner notes?

yes and thats my point. in my copy of the DVD, it does not mention 'in heaven' as not being written by black francis - gigantic and wild honey pie are there, but in heaven is not.
do you read yours punk?

The original "in heaven" is a short piece [approx 1:50] in the middle of an 18-minute slab of "music" on the Eraserhead soundtrack, how does the mp3 deal with that?

I have the Eraserhead soundtrack album. It's two sides of ambient sound straight from the movie (David Lynch's sound design) that, at times, happen to coincide with brief spurts of music. It's a super-cool thing to have.
I'm surprised it hasn't been isolated by someone into an easily accessible mp3. And I'm sure not gonna do it (vinyl is too much trouble to rip).
My advice is to get ahold of the DVD or even the videotape and just record it off that. Or just the get soundtrack album. I've seen it on CD.
I have versions of this song from 3 different performers. The original, Pixies versions, and an early 80s cover by a weird art-band called Tuxedo Moon. The Pixies is the best. |

I dont think Levitate Me is properly credited on the DVD either. Wasn't it orginally credited to Francis/Lovering/Walsh when it appeared on Come On Pilgrim cos they helped Frank with some lyrics when he was recording it?

I've noticed too. A mistake, probably.

About the original... the credits to Eraserhead say that it's written and sung by Peter Ivers (and not by . The pipe organ is played by Fats Waller! WOw!1!
Now, what I did in order to get this song was that I ripped (demuxed) it from the movie. It's 1:30 minutes long and it can be found at around 1:02:50 in the movie.
Well, I like the song itself very much, not a particular interpretation. The original version is still very good. I know of the following other bands who did a cover version (mostly live): Pixies ;), Bauhaus and Tuxedomoon. All great bands!
The funny thing is that people hardly get the lyrics right. This shows us that all of the folks have seen the movie less than 3 times... ;)
To make this posting complete here are the lyrics:
In heaven everything is fine In heaven everything is fine In heaven everything is fine You've got your good thing And I've got mine.
In heaven everything is fine In heaven everything is fine In heaven everything is fine You've got your good thing And you've got mine.
In heaven everything is fine
(David Lynch)
Ah yes, and the song is called "Lady in the Radiator Song" in the movie credits.

I just got a live bootleg version of this song done by Devo. it's like 6 minutes long with a big spiel in the middle.. though the quality isn't really good enough to make out much of it.. the spiel, that is. |

Yep, I know.
He was supposedly slain by punk. In the early 80ies he was the host of "New Wave Theatre" where he often wore a "fairy"-like wardrobe, why a lot of invited (punkish) bands openly showed their disgust towards him on air. Very sad.
I think there was this rumour it has been a punk who slayed him. Oficially it was a robbery:
"In 1983. Peter Ivers was murdered in his Los Angeles apartment. The motive apparently was robbery and the crime remains one of the many unsolved celebrity murders on the Los Angeles Police Department's history to this day."
