Your words are like nectar to my ears, or something. Try to get his first album, "Little". "Speed Racer" is one of my favorite songs ever.
Right now I'm listening to The Duke Spirit, "Cuts Across the Land". I've heard so many people rave about this one... well, can't say it's grabbed me so far.

Nectar to your ears? Like cerumen? I thought West of Rome was his first album. What about last year's Ghetto Bells? Is it any good?

That´s what I listened to reading in bed this morning. I just discovered how good Backstrokin´ is too, it´s the album that keeps on giving.

"Silver Lake" and "Ghetto Bells" are Vic's Honeycomb - hired hands, bigger orchestrations, backing vocals, as opposed to his earlier, sparser recordings. They have a fuller sound and are generally more soulful, less "quirky alt-folk" sounding. I do like them a lot, especially "Silver Lake", but that might be because they are growers and that's the older one. They certainly are different from his previous offerings, and they are not among my favorite Vic albums, not because I don't like the new sound, but because I simply think records such as "West Of Rome" and "Little" have much stronger songs.
That said, Vic Chesnutt is unfortunately going through a divorce, so he might be giving us his "Show Me Your Tears" sometime soon.
