Forefathers of grunge - I find it hard to categorise them, but heavy rock would be the most apt one I'd say. Kurt Cobain was a massive fan, their roadie and produced some of their early albums (can't remember which off the top of my head). Melvinmania is a good one to go for too start off with since it's kind of their "Best Of".

P.S. Surfer, the forefathers of grunge were the record companies who started touting music with a slacker hip-not-to-care ethos to wean white suburban kids off hiphop which was quite outspoken at the time what with Public Enemy, KRS-One and the like. But if you´re talking about the Melvins like they were there making their own scene before it became popular, I know what you mean.
P.P.S. got this this week, is very good. The guitarist from Tool is one five tracks sounding particularly Devoish and they´ve reupdated Kalifornia Uber Alles for Ahnuldt Schwarzenegger.
