Tough question. I still like TOTY most myself, but they are all great in a different way. Here's some short reviews:
Frank Black: Shortly after the Pixies breakup. You can hear some songs were intended for the Pixies, but you can hear he's already looking for a new sound as well. Teenager of the Year: Classic FB album. Great songwriting, great arrangements. Most value for money as well, counting 22 songs which are all great. Cult of Ray: First Catholics album. Quite decent, rocking album. Though not one of his best albums, my all-time favourite FB-song is on it: The Last Stand of Shazib Andlib FB & the Catholics: My favourite Catholics album. It Rocks! And six-sixty-six is wacky but soooooooo (well, what DO you call it?) let's just say: GREAT! Pistolero: The loudest FB album there is. I go insane everytime I hear "I think I'm starting to lose it", and "I love your Brain" and "Billy Radcliffe" also stand out. Dog in the Sand: Maybe I spoke too soon when I said "Shazib" was my favourite track: "St. Francis Dam Disaster", ooooow the sheer drama of THIS song might surpass any other song I know. The album as a whole is one of my favourites too. Devil's Workshop and Black Letter Days: I STILL didn't quite figure those out. Though there are some great songs again, mostly on DW, I think it's better to put out one album at a time. If he would concentrated on the best songs from both albums and put them together on one album, it would have been another great one. These two apart are just plain good. Show me your Tears: Top 3 of favourite albums definately! And it's STILL growing on me.

Agreed with almost everybodys sugestions... i started going straight from the end of the pixies and into the FB so i listened to each album as it came out... and i really cant imagine it any other way... as for a place to start... from the beginning and grow with each new album... Please dont forget the b sides, soundtracks and team-ups... the man is the man... a paradigm, and a soda jerk... you have a lot of work ahead of you, thank goodness i took all those years...
