I know everyone here is a FB fan, and that makes us love eachother unconditionally. But to everyone who isn't from the U.S., what is your opinion of Americans (based on experiences <2reelers> and/or irrational biases) in general? And please don't only comment on our current presidential administration, because most of us on this site at least agree that he is kind of a putz. Just wondering. |

Listen up, man, I'll tell you who I am. Just another stupid American. You don't wanna listen, you don't wanna understand, so finish up your drink and go home.

now this is a stupid question...maybe a better one would be "what are your experiences with americans (or fins or italians or chinese or...) and can you generalize something ?" to this i could reply, americans are the most friendly people i met, and they are also very, very honest. on the other hand, when i was there, i had the feeling that there is some some overall light paranoia in society which reflects back to the individuals.

That's just the kind of post I wanted, Malax. :) And Bart, I'll try to only talk about people in the broadest context from now on. I don't love the Pixies or Frank Black anymore. I love rock music.
And Italians. :P |

Well, you know, I hate mustard too. Hate is just one of those crazy words. Like the crazy, mixed-up world we live in.

Mustard sucks...it ruins everything it's put on. Now honey mustard is okay, for awhile. I've also had Dijon mustard, that's pretty good.
Pickles on hamburgers suck too. It ruins it. ("It ruins it" is kind of a weird looking sentence) However, pickles by themselves are pretty good.
These are the things that make me hate Americans.<smiley face>

Basically, though, mustard is the "milk" of the mustard seed.

Has anybody else heard the rumor that mayonnaise is melted down elephant tusks? Another reason to hate Americans.

Once I was up in Canada for a week for my job and I saw a TV news report on the CBC where they sent a reporter to Washington D.C. to ask Americans where the capital of Canada is? Most of the Americans couldn't answer. They then went back to the anchors in the studio who in their pitter-patter conversation concluded that Canada needed to do a better of teaching Americans about Canada. I thought the better conclusion was that many Americans are dumb or don't care about the rest of the world. So, either Canadians are too nice or their self-esteem as a nation is a bit too low. |

All really fat, and pretty dumb, and pretty obnoxious. haha

Just like the english dont sit around drinking tea with bad teeth...
ok, so maybe that true to a certain extent!
I love you for what I am not, I did not ask for what I have got.
You will get used to me. Welcome to your new joy. |

Heh, well, I imagine you were probably watching mock-news-show This Hour Has 22 Minutes? The sometimes run segments where they interview Americans asking them questions about Canada. You wouldn't believe some of the stuff that comes up. People not knowing the capital of Canada is Ottawa or thinking it's Toronto is pretty common. If you want to entertain yourself, just go ask some people on the street.
I was in Europe backpacking and at a hostel I met a Danish couple, a Frenchman, and an American. We were sitting at a little cafe discussing politics and of course the American started saying how they've never lost a war, yadayadayada. So the Danish bloke asks him about the war of 1812 (which I was too polite to bring up), and this brings up Canadian politics. At this point, he mentions as a means of proving something else that we're still ruled by the queen. I probably am guilty of laughing out loud as I tell him that we have not been under British rule for many years, and that she is now no more than a ceremonial figurehead with no real power.
And what happens at this point? He argues with me. Not just polite, "Well, I thought this, though" but "Nope. She runs your country." And finally I remind him that I live in Canada and he doesn't and probably have a little more insight into such things, but it doesn't matter. He can't possibly be wrong. He actually got angry. The rest of us were looking at each other in disbelief and/or amusement.
But that's one story, and I've met lots of Americans I like and who are not arrogant and not ego-centric. But it does seem on the whole like Americans tend to be a little too focused on their own country and not enough on what's going on. I'm pretty sure the whole of Europe (on the other side of the planet) could *on average* tell you more about Canada than our southern neighbours. I have yet to meet someone who knows geographically where Saskatchewan is much less that it's a province (among only 10) in Canada. You could name any US state and I'm sure that 90% of Canadians would not only be able to tell you it's a US state (there are 50 of em) but would probably be able to give you an approximate geographical location and maybe even a capital city.
But this is sounding like a rant when it's really more of an analysis of the whole Canadian-American thing from a Canadian's point-of-view. I suppose we like to be tolerant up here, or try to be, and pride ourselves on it, while we see the opposite south of us. This might be directly related to the extreme and blinding nationalism that is all the more blatant when you're not seeing it every day. I did a propaganda analysis of Bush's post 9/11 speech to Congress and it used all seven (is it seven or nine?) devices of propoganda so much it was scary. I think being proud of your country is one thing, but being nationalistic is another, with perhaps more positive connotations but also some serious consequences.
Hope this isn't offensive to anyone, not my intent if so. Now I go.
