I stumbled apone this one night by accident with a freind. We were staying, during a bank holiday weekend, down the country and by the Monday were really bored. We decieded to get abit of drink and just watch the T.V. that night. We sat down to watch whatever film was on. I remember when it started that I'd seen the really badly put together robots somewhere before and that it seemed really weird and cheesey to be a "proper" film. Then I remembered that I seen them in an American magazine about some t.v. show that I'd never heard of. After the robots and this guy had finished fooling around their spaceship they went to sit down and watch a movie in a huge cinema. You could see thier silhouettes at the bottom of the screen and they kept talking during the whole thing.

The film they were watching was This Planet Earth, I think. It has to be one of the funniest things I have ever seen. The characters talk through the whole film, doing really funny commentry over a bad 50's B movie. They just basically slagged it off, the type of stuff you'd do with your friends, putting on stupid voices and making fun of the ridiculous plot. It was so funny, I havn't laughed that hard in ages. Has anyone watched it? It's a t.v. series in America right? I'd love it if it got shown on BBC2 or Channel 4.

It's been off the air for a few years now, I think.

-

Comedy Central showed it for ages. SciFi Channel picked it up for a while, but seemed to be a bit lesser quality.

-

I remember watching it nearly every night during the summer of '96.

yeah, i'm a huge MST3K fan, as are many Frank fans. When Frank himself was asked if he was, too, he said yes, though didn't seem at that fanatical about it.
anyways, that episode you're describing seems to be the movie version they made. Basically just higher production values than the regular TV version. But the studio was lame to them, and most involved aren't happy with the finished project. So try to find copies of the TV show. There are several (region 1) DVD releases. www.mst3k.com

Yay, MST3K! I haven't watched any in a while, but it's excellent drunken, late-night viewing.

When I lived in Madison, WI, I went to see the MST3K movie at the Majestic Theatre, and the Kelly Deal 6000 was there too (they were playing a gig later across the street.)

I used to love watching this too. Something about it reminds me of my childhood. Probably because as a kid I used to watch those kind of movies. And made fun of them with my friends. It's interesting to hear a lot of Frank fans are fans of this show.

Great show - started watching it in 91, and I have still not caught all of the episodes. We sometimes catch it on the weekends, but they play it so damn early -I'm pretty sure it's on the Scifi channel, like around 9 AM on Saturday? I don't understand, I can't find anything about it, but we just watched one about 3 weeks ago? I think? Am I getting senile already?

Just found this trying to double check the listings: http://www.mst3kinfo.com/

Joel was fantastic. He seemed sleepy all the time, but it made him even funnier.

Wow, people that have heard of MST3K!!!

I loved this show, haven't seen it in some time, but it always cracked me up. I've yet to name the show and have someone actually admit to having heard of it much less liking it, glad I'm not the only one.

Who sang the theme song, it's going to be in my head all day now! I rented the movie a couple week-ends ago and was sadly disappointed, the shows seemed funnier!

This show is the greatest. Some of my favorite episodes: Cave Dwellers, Time Chasers, Riding with Death, Prince of Space... there are alot of good ones. Sadly you can only buy a handful of them on DVD. But I taped almost all of them when they were on the Sci-Fi channel. Those are all from season 8 and on, so I don't have a whole lot of earlier episodes.

I don't know who sings the theme song, but I'm pretty sure Joel wrote it.

Sort of. But the premise of the show is that these guys are trapped in a science experiment to determine a human reaction to terrible sci fi movies. Joel, the original guinea pig, created the 'bots to keep him company. When Joel escaped, his replacement was the temp, Mike. I like Mike, but I miss Joel.

Agreeing with my DH, I too think their shining episode was Manos, followed closely by Clash of the Moons, and the holiday classic Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

And of course, no midwesterner's joy would be complete without catching all the Wisconsin/Minnesota references, subtle as they may be.

So thats the premise, cheers, I did'nt have a clue what it was about. Just knew I liked it. Red Dwarf is a totally different bag of otters, like people here with MST3K, I spent my teens watching it.

Space Mutiny and The Mole People are classics of the sci-fi channel years, but my favorite ever is Joel's last episode, in which they viewed the Joe Don Baker movie Mitchell. Just thinkinmg about the theme song lyrics they wrote for that cracks me up: "Mitchell, hearts pounding. Mitchell, chest's bursting. Keep you eyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee on the sandwich!"

warm....warmer.....disco!

Yeah, in the credits is lists Joel as being the songwriter.

-

To me, it sounds like the cast is singing the theme. Dunno.
