What songs would it contain? I like "Teenager of the Year", and this post is in no way trying to bash the album. I'd just like to get some thoughts on this. The selections don't have to be in any particular order. But keep in mind you have to make this one (1) full length album (30-45 minutes). Feel free to mention reasons why you chose the songs and order you did, and also feel free to list alternates (songs that can go in the places of others). I personally feel this would've been better as a single album. Here's my version:
FRANK BLACK - TEENAGER OF THE YEAR (1994)
01. Whatever Happened to Pong? (1:33) 02. Thalassocracy (1:33) 03. Speedy Marie (3:34) 04. Headache (2:52) 05. Freedom Rock (4:17) 06. Two Reelers (3:02) 07. Fazer Eyes (3:36) 08. The Hostess With the Mostest (1:56) 09. Big Red (2:41) 10. Pure Denizen of the Citizen's Band (2:20) 11. Bad, Wicked World (1:57) 12. Pie in the Sky (2:14)
TOTAL RUNNING TIME: 31:40
Have fun!

wow ! now that is heavy stuff....
if it really must be, i would take the first half (the first lp of the double album). of course it's hard to let "pie in the sky" and "bad wicked world" go, and it's the same with "pure denizen"...
but my opinion about teenager always was, that there
a) is absolutely no filler on it (but i don't know any filler of FB) b) all songs are high above average or "just good" (i could not say the same about pistolero or dw)
but especially every song from "pong" to "fiddle riddle" is absolutely incredible and ingenious and far beyound any measure. also, the order is perfect. "pong" and "thalassocracy" are basically one song, and the transition from headache --> sir rockabye --> freedom rock --> two reelers always makes my day.

I shake my fist at you blasphemers, only kidding. Too tough for me to choose tho, if i tried i'd be here so long i'd have to be paid overtime. Sorry to stray off topic but have you guys heard the acoustic version of "pure denizen" the one where he says "wow this guy can really play ,just like jimmy page"?,it is so class i can barely describe it!!I found it on Soulseek with an acoustic version of pong and they are incredible, do these come from like a acoustic version of teenager or what? Any info would be appreciated. |

white noise maker has to be on the album.
I'm not able of cutting any songs, though. My experience of TOTY is so personal, that every second is important!

I've had this conversation every year since 1994. I find it interesting that there are so many variations of what people consider the best half of TOTY to be. I also find it interesting that most of the songs people choose are NOT in my top 12. Just goes to show the consistent quality of all Teenager tracks makes compiling a shorter version a bit of a lottery. Like Black Letter Days, a tough record to try and edit. Further proof that FB rarely if ever writes or records a dud song.. Rock On!

How dare you not have Calistan on there! :) I'm not going to attempt this, either. Great album as it is. |

Calistan and Vanishing Spies are absolutely essential. Vanishing Spies gets no love around here.

How is it 'one album'? The CD version is only a one-disc set, but the 12" vinyl version is a 2-record set.
"Pong", "Thallassocracy", "I want to Live on an Abstract Plain", "Calistan", "Sir Rockabye", "Freedom Rock", and "Two Reelers" all definitely have to be on there, imo.
Yeah, I don't know why - I just don't care for the Vanishing Spies that much. |

I have a cd from Elektra/4AD titled 'Frank Black: Selections From Teenager Of The Year'. On the front in small print it reads:
"a blatant attempt to garner adult alternative airplay"
The inner sleeve reads:
"From his beginnings as an alternative music groundbreaker to his current status as larger-than-life purveyor of pop melody and wit, Frank Black has been one of the most original songwriters of the past ten years. These eleven songs, half of Teenager of the Year, demonstrate that he knows how to take risks and still make music for all ages"
The songs are:
Calistan Abstract Plain Big Red Speedy Marie Headache Sir Rockaby Superabound Fiddle Riddle I Could Stay Here Forever The Vanishing Spies Space Is Gonna Do Me Good
They nailed a few tracks I would want in, but left out some of my favourites too. |

28-tracks [including the six Headache b-sides] all fit onto one CD. Works very nicely!!
