Frank, I want to tell you how much I love the first solo album you released in 1993. That record opened my ears to what was possible in rock music and changed my life forever.

ive only got "show me your tears" and a few songs from kazza.

Well then Charles,
I would say that you need to go buy some more of his albums, If you like SMYT, try Dog in the Sand.
Kaaza is a great place to sample new tunes, but remember it's nice to buy, if you like what you've tasted.

I think the yellow album is incredible, as well. There's a solo acoustic set on the FTP that's also excellent. I believe it's titled, "CFNY Solo Acoustic - 1993-06-03"
It's definately worth checking out. Frank's very candid throughout. He gives some great song explanations, the audio quality is very good, and it really exemplifies how talented he is.
He plays seven tunes. Six off of his selftitled & a rockin' good version of the Kinks, "This is where I belong".

My personal favorite album by the Catholics is Black Letter Days, but that's just me. LOL
Yes, I was 100% ignorant of the Pixies, Frank and of course the not-yet-existent Catholics when I bought his solo album in 1994. I had no idea what kind of music it was going to be, except that it was in the Rock category on the store rack. I was taking a chance, was exploring some new stuff, and occasionally bought albums I knew nothing about, to expand my horizons. LOL
That album changed my taste in music almost single-handedly. I love it.

I can no longer choose a favourite FB album, but for the longest time, it was a toss up between the first two: the orange album and TOTY. Now, with DITS, BLD, and SMYT in there, who can really say?

| Cult, I feel exactly the same way. I love the diversity of the first two, but then, the others are so great. I can no longer choose a favorite, but that's been said before! Just keep the tunes coming, Frank!!! |

This album is, imo, after all these years, Frank's top-notch, shining moment in the sun. Just listen to the melodies and the chord progressions - that's all what songs boil down to for me. It's consummately AMAZING how catchy these melodies are - he's using the weirdest and most-eccentric chord progressions, rhythms, and time signatures; but I couldn't get Los Angeles out of my head if my life depended on it. Just observe these melodies - I, personally, have come across almost none stronger.
I think Devil's Workshop is second, and I don't understand why this album is so neglected. DITS is, in my personal humble opinion, not as good as Devil's Workshop. Last time I checked, DITS had neither "San Antonio, TX" nor "His Kingly Cave". |

| I think it's hard for one to be avant-garde without sounding as though he/she is doing it just to be avant-garde. It's also really hard to use common, rootsy progressions and yet still be powerful. Case in point: Neil Young's "Hey Hey My My". I know that chord is coming, but the goosebumps are sure to come every time Neil hits it. I respect the songwriters who can be simple yet beautiful ('hey hey') as much as those who can be quirky yet beautiful ('los angeles'). So yeah, this album exhibits FB's ability to be eccentric yet beautiful/fantastic tunes. |

well....im definalely going to get some more records. i love what ive got and
want more. i used to be completely addicted to the pixies. but now ive got all the cds and im getting bored of the old songs so now im gona get the FB cds.
are the black francis solo albums( from the pixies era) stil
on sale?

Just been driving home and through the speakers on popped Hang on To Your Ego.
An hour later i'm posting this, just to say how amazing this song is.
I know it's a cover, and I mean Franks own material no disrespect by this, no way, but it's one of his best songs ever recorded in a studio in my opinion.
The solo in the middle, the "hang ons" at the end.....what a song. |
