It means: "How about that?" (Spoken in a celebratory tone of pride)

Not sure on the origin of the phrase, but I imagine it's tied to getting one's just desserts.
In other words, if someone were to do something bad to you, and then the same bad thing was done to them, you might ask them how it felt to taste what they've been feeding others, or "How do ya like them apples?". Not that you care how they feel about it, you just want to rub it in. :)

I'm from the UK and I've heard it, probably in a film or something, now I'm off to have my cake and eat it.
For ten thousand years he slept, his mind feeding on the nightmares of the weak. Now he has awakened. As the night turned crimson, the fire-blade shattered and his power died. Then, the slaughter began... |

Dang. My apologies. That last is grammatically incorrect. "I'm from the US" and "I don't use it very much" are both independent clauses. Therefore, a comma should seperate them.
Well, I think that. I am not sure. |

I think I heard it in Good Will Hunting if I remember right, and I had no idea what they were talking about, which is a shame cos it was the punchline.

Calm down! The last thing we need is a repeat of 1997's M.I.T. Language Riots, which took place after the Militant Grammarians of Massachusetts national convention

I thought Matt Damon said, "How do you like to suck my balls?" and then Ben Affleck said, "Like apples"

I use that quite alot.
The UK has alot of strange little phrases; "mad as a box of frogs", "gay as a window", "stranger things happen at sea, " whats that got to do with the price of fish?".
Actually i don't know if any of those orginate from England, i just use them alot. |

Gay as a window is very nice!
In French we say "pédé comme un foc" which means "gay like a jib" (I found the word "jib" on a translation website so i don't know if it's correct. Stands for a sail that is on the front of the boat - the wind comes from the back, you see)
It's our tradition to control, Like Erich Honecker and Helmut Kohl, From the Ukraine to the Rhône. Sweet home über alles, Lord, I'm coming home. So come on, Sugar Daddy, bring me home. |

I like "stranger things happen at sea" as well. Or "raining cats and dogs". There are some very subtle and funny expressions in the UK.

I've heard it plenty, and you emphasise "them" -- "how d'ja like *them* apples?!"... sort of like "have a taste of your *own* medicine!"...
Witness this example from South Park, with Terrance And Philip -- "Hey, Scott, do you like apples?"...
http://new.wavlist.com/tv/048/201_apples.wav
... but you really have to see it to appreciate it... :)

'Gay as a window' comes from Chris Morris. He of 'Day Today' and 'Brass Eye' fame. He's a genius. He also wrote and performed the greatest Pixies tribute song ever. It's absolutely hilarious. A big fan apparently.

In Greek we have an expression : " Peinaw san pousths" translated "i'm hungry as a faggot". Never understood why gay hunger is so proverbial.
