I was reading this yesterday, cause I am generally of the impression that official holidays are pretty silly and are the result of a deeper greeting-card-monolith-and-flower-and-gift-retailer conspiracy. It appears it is just yet another "evolution" of a pagan festival:

Wasn't there a pagan holiday where a family used to put a lot of blankets on the Granma or the Granpa, then sit on them and drink all night until he/she died ? I think that Burroughs mentions this in one of his novels, though I don't remember which one.

I hate greeting cards. How boring.
They are too expensive. 4 bucks for fakely poetic words that some flake from Hallmark came up with. That flake does not know my family and friends and what they mean to me.
