I don't know if there is something wrong with my new cd but Hey starts without Frank saying "Hey", a pause and then the bass following. It just starts with the bass. It bugs me, I love it when that song starts with "Hey".

I wonder who decided to change the track and why? It sounds very strange without the standard beginning, it spoils the song for me.

That's messed up. I wasn't going to buy the CD anyway, but I can't imagine listening to "Hey" without the "hey" intro.
That sounds like something a modern rock radio station would do. Edit out 2 seconds of a song just to make it shorter.

I can't say anything at the moment (until there's been a press release about it, which is imminent), but there will be measures done to correct it - I'm not at work today, so can't check, fingers crossed there's something soon..
there is a new version of the Best Of being made, complete with 'Hey'. It will be identifiable, but how, I do not know... |

it might also be a cunning plan to make people buy 2 copies of the best of - one without hey, and another with. pretty underhanded marketing compain going on there.....

so what I'm hearing is that I should buy a couple of copies now, keep them sealed and hang onto them for a dozen years until they become rare collector's items, and then auction them on e-bay to pay for my kid's college.
and Jo, it DOES flow better than DTTP

Another peculiar feature of the CD is the timestamp it has..if you pop the CD into your CD-ROM, and check out the CDA files, you'll find that it was apparently pressed:
5:00pm - 5:58pm on Dec 31st, 1994
Rather strange..

It's the Hey remix!
You know, I was going to buy this disc but instead I thought I would take my Pixies cds (I own two of each, thanks to being married to a Pixies fan) and make my own. Seems cheaper that way -- and plus I don't really want a copy of the Hey remix.

Holy crap!!! It's a new Pixies track - a mix of Hey! without the proper intro. Now they're reissuing it, I'm gonna have to buy a greatest hits album, because it's going to be worth as much as my mispressed Hawkwind vinyl one day. /sarcasm |

uuh. ok, jop, get your jo-bingo counter on, I'm feeling all patient at the moment.
1. this compilation isn't targeted towards fans who already have the records. It's towards people who haven't heard the band before. It exists as a starting point for those people who will see them at festivals for the first time this year.
2. If you don't want to download it, don't. Seems a bit pointless adding a comment like that, a waste of your time to just go and post it on here, doesn't it?
3. What would you suggest 4AD does to put it right? I think this is a good option, for people who are pissed off cause they bought the album, minus the "hey". It's something, which is a darn sight better than nothing.

This isn't a personal attack on Jo, as she has nothing to do with this, or even 4AD. Maybe it's an attack on the work ethic of people in general today.
How could this compilation CD get made with a mistake like that on it? I mean, that's kind of major. I'm not buying the CD or anything, but I would be a little bit irritated that they let that slide if I had. I don't understand how that mistake would get past all the editors? It's pretty ridiculous when you think about it. I mean, I would like to think I would have "proofread" the CD I was putting out and making money on. In the whole scheme of things, this mistake has no consequences on the history of the universe, but someone's job is to make sure the CD has everything in order, and that got past them? It's kind of hilarious.
Again, I'm not attacking Jo, as she has nothing to do with that department. In fact, I feel sorry for her because she has to deal with someone's ridiculous mistake.
Also, my opinion may be completely ridiculous.

I can't go into how it happened on here, but it's one of those stupid things, where we played the compilation in the office god knows how many times, and didn't notice it, and then did... and were "ermmmmmm how the HELL did that happen?"
it is weird, I mean, god, I've had Doolittle for years and years, and I didn't even spot it - in fact, considering how many people have got the Best Of, only a very small minority spotted it (a lot of 4AD catalogue number collectors got copies with their subscription package, yet nobody noticed on the 4AD boards...) maybe it's just one of those things you listen out for, I dunno. I'm great at spotting spelling mistakes, but this.. completely passed me by - and we've played the compilation in here so many times.
I guess in the end, the main thing is, we're doing something about it - even just a free download, until the new stock is ready, which should be soon...
thanks for not blaming me though :) I know nobody is, I just sometimes get a bit defensive (I wasn't there though!) |

I think 4AD should distribute PRIORITY notice to all venders that the product has been declared defective and that they are therefore authorized to accept returns, to include free shipping. I assume that ALL present stock is being removed from shelves and all sales from present stock have been suspended. Just today I received a copy from Amazon. It remains unopened and I intend to return it, at no cost to myself. That's my suggestion. |

I wonder how many copies have already been sold. It would be a huge financial loss to 4AD if they have to revoke all the faulty copies as well as exchange those already sold. It would also be the right thing to do.
I'm hanging on to my copy though, I bought it because I wanted it for the artwork and also because I am stupid and would buy anything released by the Pixies. I'll listen to Hey on the Doolittle cd.
Finally thanks to Jo for keeping us informed. I'm sure as a fellow Pixies fan you would love to see this issue sorted out.

there.
I don't know, after watching senate testamony on c-span non-stop, I've been on a big 'responsiblity' kick lately. I would have been happy with 'we made a mistake, we are sorry to disappoint the fans.' Instead we get 'it has come to out attention...' and an flippant invitation to sing kareoke.
Your company is correcting their mistake for future pressings, and that's cool and right, but for us who paid fourteen bucks for your product, that doesn't really help much. And you're right, there's not really anything that you can do, except maybe apologize as a company in your press release for this mistake in quality control. I know a lot of fans bought this to complete their collections and they got a defect, and they are understandably dissapointed. A file on a computer doesn't really add to one's cd collection.

i personally don't really see the problem. sure, we're missing 2 seconds of a track, but the only people who are actually going to notice that are the people who already own the albums anyways. and me, i'm keeping my copy and won't be asking for a fixed one - simply not worth the effort.
sure, 4ad should be embarrassed about the booboo, but they're doing everything they can to rectify the fault, and ya gotta respect that.

Yeah...if you guys dont mind my asking...why exactly are you buying this thing in the first place? Assuming all of you have every Pixies album. And if it is the completist reason, than shouldn't you be happy one of the songs is mildly different, albeit in a worse way? |

I bought it because sometimes I don't feel like listening to any specific album, but rather a mix of all their stuff. I believe that is the exact point of a best of record. I already had DTTP but I was impressed by the tracklisting and encouraged by Jo assertions that the record flows better then the previous best of, which it definately does.
And I don't understand your last sentence. I should be happy that something is worst? What an odd statement.

i think 4ad have done the bet thing they could. adding a free download is almost like admitting there mistake and telling people that they did it. and there kind of giving themselfs a punishment to make amense. very human |
