Pitchfork reviewed it today and gave it 5.1. I've not seen it yet but from what I can tell its mainly nothing new to me. I'll buy it when its cheaper or from ebay second hand.

I just bought it for 14.99 euros(it was 17.99 but I had a money-off coupon), so I'm a happy little bunny. The best-off going quite cheap everywhere, too. |

I got mine for no pence, fnar fnar. Its pretty cool though, sorry, very cool. The documentary was a Talkback programme, so its only fair that its tailored to a British audience I guess. I love Adam's impression of La La Love You, excellent.

DVD nice. DVD good. Got it yesterday.
Charles Frank Francis looks really dorky with the long hair in the On the Road footage.
I enjoy the Gouge documentary. It's too bad folks, including Frank, are so down on Bossanova and Trompe le Monde in it. In the middle of all that, I was happy though to see Joey Santiago say something like "most bands dip, but we never dipped". He knows what's up.
David Bowie's music is sometimes cool, but boy is he hard to take in the documentary. I know he's a big art collector and he sure does talk like one. Kristin Hersh gets in about two seconds of commentary. I wish we coulda heard more from her. |

Yes she said something that was true and that had to be said Frank can write a great song in any genre I say that it was the smartest and most uplifting comment on the whole dvd! besides she looked great! Which has nothing to do with her comments but is also a reason why I would have wanted more Hersh on the DVD! I hope there will be a Throwing Muses DVD soon!

bit slow on this, been studying for my exams (fat lot of good that did me!), but got the dvd last week, pretty darn good. the live show is amazing, greatly shot, love the colour thing they've done with it... and great sound too (even on a mono TV)... a bit annoying then watching gouge as it has loads of clips from the live show... a shame that when they're talking about bossanova and trompe and even doolittle they're mostly playing clips from that show in between... what about playing the videos for the songs they were talking about, or any other live footage? i say again, tim wheeler is a twat, why they bothered asking him, i'll never know... but the rest of it, cool. the videos are good. and the on the road stuff is good to watch once, quite an interesting insight, but i don't think i'll watch it again!

actually, he says that about BOSSANOVA. which is also a lie. i would think most Pixies fan's least favorite is TROMPE. but even still, TROMPE is a great album too. |

i didn't see this thread before (i wouldn't have started my own thread)..
i'm curious why it's ALL Brits being interviewed for the documentary (except that one guy). i understand it's a British production and all.. but surly other artists would have liked to contribute too no?
i think it's cool how the Brits love the Pixies so much. they have good taste. but there are so many American bands they could have interviewed too. |

They could've interveiwed Kurt Cobain, but I think it's a little to late for that. I like British bands more anyway. Not many American bands that stick out as really good. At least not anymore. My favorite moment in the DVD is when Charles and Kim are laying on the grass and they're talking about TV shows they like and hate. They looked so sweet with eachother. Nice to see them getting along before all the fighting.
But that's only my opinion, I could be wrong. |

i agree that is a great moment. i heard they werent really fighting as much as the jjournalists hyped them up to be. but i couls also be wrong

I think he said that because Bossanova have a softer, more produced sound than Trompe. Well, Joey said Trompe is the Pixies Heavy Metal record. If you are a hard core Pixies fan, you should prefer Trompe rather than Bossanova.

kim isn't in it. no idea why. i could guess, but it'd hardly be fair. from a mojo interview/article about the pixies around the same time, which did interview her, seemed she was drinking a lot... erm, i dunno!

for the gatrillionth time :)
Kim doesn't feature on Gouge, as the filmmakers only had a limited amount of time in the US getting interviews - I'm guessing the majority of their time was with the bandmembers. Unfortunately, Kim and the filmmakers couldn't work out a time they could both meet, so in the end, the docu had to go ahead without her input.
In the end, 'On The Road' balances out the lack of Kim in 'Gouge' - something that couldn't be helped - the 'Gouge' people had deadlines to reach for the programme in the first place... |

Well the filmmakers could have mentioned in the documentary that Kim was willing to participate but was unable to due to schedule problems. It would have been better than pretending to ignore her rather conspicuous absence, which was bound to trigger all sorts of speculations.
I didn't find "On the Road" all that interesting myself. They're touring. They arse about. Yeah, big (ahem) deal. I'm not impressed. (Not to mention the fact that I can hardly catch a word of what they say to each other most of the times.)
I guess I'm not an uberfan after all. But I already suspected that.
I really like the live footage though.

i thought the on the road stuff was good to get an idea of what they were like 'in real life', but yeah, i won't be watching it again. was very annoying having a jerky camera watching them perform, only to cut away half way through the song to something else... and again, it was all from their early days. my one quarm with the dvd, would have been nice if there was some live footage of their latter days... i mean they played the zoo tv tour didn't they? there must be fucking footage for that somewhere! bono even had his own camera and a million tv screens around him!

Don't worry Bumble, if the 2004 tour keeps selling out, someone will certainly find a way to sell you yet another DVD, this one with "footage of their latter days"... dontcha think?

bear in mind, 4AD went up to budget on this DVD, and put as much as possible in there. I'm sure at a later stage a DVD with any other bits we own will happen..
as far as the filmmakers commenting, well, maybe they should, maybe they shouldn't - I mean, in the end, they haven't, so there's not a lot can be done about it really - and I can't believe you don't all like "on the road" - it made me want to cry in parts I thought it was that good :) Gouge I found boring. I don't care what other people think about the band, although then again, the one good thing about it, which is sort of null and void now, is I got to see what they look like playing live. |

i thought ON THE ROAD was interesting. but yeah, whoever shot it definitely does not have a future as a cinematographer. i didn't understand why at most of the concerts he was filming from WAAAY back in the crowd. couldn't he have been on stage? |

yeah, I mean, in the end, the person who shot it, probably never thought at the time that the Pixies would be as huge as they are now. Right place right time, great footage.
Although I thought the 'Where Is My Mind' bit was on stage? I could be wrong though, I've only seen it three times and not too recently |

Was'nt there a video for 'Planet Of Sound'? The jewel-case makes it look like an 'old-fashioned' DVD, but I'm not complaining. I hav'nt got round to watching it yet, but I'm kinda excited(like the little nerd I am!!) |

The "On the Road" stuff was great. Yeah, I'm not gonna watch it again and again, but I thought it was a blast to see the first time. The way it was shot is no different than what anyone might do if they're just fooling around with a video camera taping their friends, which is all it was originally. And that's fine. It's been edited well.
And is it wrong and/or stupid of me to admit that I couldn't understand what a lot of the commentators in the Gouge doc. were saying? I don't think understood anything Tim Wheeler said. Some Irish accents don't go down too easy on American ears. And I think I had some problems with Alex James, too.
That's not a complaint. I just found it funny. |

yeah, there's some stuff on the stages. but the stuff that's recorded from like the nose-bleed section.. i was thinking to myself "doesn't this guy have like back-stage access?".
don't get me wrong, i enjoyed it. i've already watched the DVD like 3 times. |
