Saw this last night....it's a really good movie, based on Ray Bradbury's novel. It has a very dated Austin Powersesque view of the future, but then it is an old movie(recent movies set in the future wil surely date just as badly). Anyhoo, it's vision of a book-burning facist state is quite interesting. Julie Christie plays two characters in it, which is kinda freaky! I think it's Francois Truffants' only english language film. It actually made me think maybe it inspired parts of Spielberg's Minority Report(based on Phillip K. Dick's novel);I'm thinking of the law-enforcer-on-the-run parts...the cops-with-jetpacks scene in MK reminds me of a scene in Fahrenheit 451 with these flying guys searching for the main guy, superimposed on the screen and looking like the guys in Daft Punk! Oh yeah, Truffant(can't spell that right!) was in Spielberg's Close Encounters. |

I never saw the movie. I was just reading some of the book again the other day. We read it in Highschool. That's the Cult of Ray Bradbury, right? |

Trivia: F.Truffau in an interview said that he didn't like the way it came out, and that he considered it his worst film. I think he's right, the film is kind of weak. Maybe people don't like it much because the book was such a masterpiece.
[Edit] Corrected the spelling of Trufo to avoid French lessons.

It's "Truffaut", noy "Truffant". You pronounce "true-foe".

Actually, I do pronounce it correctly, but I could'nt remember how to spell it! Did'nt he also direct Jules Et Jim and Wild Strawberries? I hav'nt seen any of his other films, as far as I can remember. He's regarded as one of the most important directors of all time, of course. I remember an old interview with FB where I think he said he met Ray Bradbury and shook his hand, like in COR(The song)....he mentioned that he still gives talks at public libraries and the like.
Sorry, Wild Strawberries is Bergman! |

Great book. Only saw some of the movie. It seemed pretty good.
Aren't they supposed to be making a new one?

The book is great, haven't seen the movie...though I want to. Ray Bradbury has such an imagery about his work. (Read "Dandelion Wine") That's probably why the movies don't compare.
Has anybody seen any other Ray Bradbury movie renditions? For example, "Something Wicked This Way Comes", or "The Illustrated Man"?

I heard rumors about a new movie. Nothing really compares to the book. One of my friends who is still in high school was in a production of a stage version of the play. I could only stomach the first act because it was so poorly done. Firemen in spandex and silly helmets with broom bristles at the end... the menacing spider-like dog that is so terrifying in the book was a box with a lampshade on one side covered in tin foil. No city gets bombed in the end. The little girl that Guy Montag befriends didn't die like she did in the book. It was bad. Bad, bad, bad. They butchered my all time favorite book.

Spider-like dog? That coulda been interesting in the movie. 'Something Wicked' was made into a movie, I vaguely remember it was okay(despite being a Disney production). |

I enjoyed this film. I love Francois Truffaut's films. Do you like the actor playing the leading character? His name is Oskar Werner and he also appears in JULES ET JIM . And that film is a masterpiece of Francois Truffaut, I think. It have a different motif from Fahrenheit 451 , but there is a similarity between them. "Burning up fire" is symbol of one's fate. ...Sorry,I can't explain enough.

I like the concept a lot more than the execution. I'm not a big reader, but I love a good book, and Fahrenheit went unloved by me. It was my choice for summer reading out of a few different books in high school. I should have read The Great Gatsby. Amazingly great movie. Loved it twice.

should read the book soon, got it on order from amazon, well my gf has... didn't realise there's a movie too! not really a book person... might just hunt down the film.
i've only ever liked 4 books.
Is it like today? Oh, oh, oh-oh. Then there followed days with kings, empires and revolutions. blood just looks the same when you open the veins. sometimes it was faith, power or reason as the cornerstone. but the furrowed brow has never left his face. he said, how did it come to this?

I can't stand the movie. The book is brilliant. There's a new movie due out in 2005 and it at least has a chance. The same guy that adapted Green Mile and Shawshank from King, Frank Darabont, is directing it. |

Speaking of book movies, A made-for-TV movie version of Brave New World was on the Sci-Fi channel last night and it was absolutely the worst thing I've ever seen. If one saw that movie without ever reading the novel, he or she would be completely turned off to it. The acting, directing, production, scripting, casting, absolutely everything was terrible and I barely made it through the whole thing.

Oh yeah, Oskar Werner....Frank Darabont was working on a script for Indiana Jones 4, but that went belly-up. I guess he could make a decent adaptation/remake of Fahrenheit 451. I really liked Shawshank, Green Mile was pretty good, hav'nt seen The Majestic but I heard it's a little schmaltzy. |
