Perhaps a formum member would have the information to ask this question. I work for a college radio station in Southeastern Massachusetts, WSMU. We are reputed to be the first station to play the Throwing Muses and a few other 4AD acts, but no one remembers if we were the first to air the Pixies or not. Would anyone out there know for certain if it was us, and if not, who it was? thanks, Jared

I'm not sure about who played a track of theirs first, but WJUL was probably the first to have the Pixies in studio for an interview. December 15th, 1986 I believe was the date of that interview. Before that, WMBR had been playing Pixies tracks for several weeks... I'd venture that WMBR is probably your stiffest competition.

Don't suppose you keep the recordings from way back then?

I seem to recall it was WBCN that was the first to play teh Pixies, they played Down to the Well (an old version) pretty frequently. wild that that station has turned to such complete utter shit in the time being. |

If WBCN played early Pixies it was during Nocturnal Emmissions late Sunday night and then went back to playing Tom Petty.
The first significant airplay I heard in Boston was Where is My Mind on WFNX. Before that I think they were relegated to the hipster Sunday night local radio shows. |

Thanks for the info. WSMU have always assumed we were one of the first, if not the first, due to being located near Ken Goes, and a stone's throw away from Westport, MA, but we were never sure. I will have to do some research through some of the surviving playlists from that period, and bug some of the old time DJs to see what I uncover. Thanks again, Jared
