I have recently developed an addiction to New Order. I have to say, for being an 80s pop band, their songs just transcend that formula so much and are just so well-crafted. I suppose part of this comes from the fact that they were once Joy Division, a band with a much more left-of-center approach to music. And I like Joy Division, but I have to say, I get more of a kick out of New Order. My favorites right now are Nothing To Me (I think it's actually titled Let's Go), True Faith, 1963, World In Motion, and Blue Monday. I like Bizarre Love Triangle, but I've heard it so many times, and actually kind of prefer the Frente! cover.

"Thieves like us" and "Perfect kiss" are my favorite NO songs. I like "Temptation" as well. Their last album was very good, too.
I also like Joy Division very much, it was really a great band (almost the same line up as NO, but their music really evolved through years).

I love New Order.
Although it's been fairly well dissed, I believe Movement is their best album. (Their first)
Perfect for the Joy Division fan curious about New Order ...or someone who thinks that NO is just a dance/pop group.

New Order is a magnificent band and they've made many great records. Many of their songs bring back memories of my high school years in the eighties. I devoured each new record of theirs and still love most of it today. Low Life is my favorite New Order album. Ever heard the song Ceremony? It is early New Order and Peter Hook plays one of the most beautifull bass melodies ever. Everything's Gone Green and Temptation are also incredible.

Ceremony is more like Joy Division than NO. It's one of my favourites as well, the lyrics are great.

"Ceremony"
This is why events unnerve me, They find it all, a different story, Notice whom for wheels are turning, Turn again and turn towards this time, All she ask's the strength to hold me, Then again the same old story, World will travel, oh so quickly, Travel first and lean towards this time.
Oh, I'll break them down, no mercy shown, Heaven knows, it's got to be this time, Watching her, these things she said, The times she cried, Too frail to wake this time.
Oh I'll break them down, no mercy shown Heaven knows, it's got to be this time, Avenues all lined with trees, Picture me and then you start watching, Watching forever, forever, Watching love grow, forever, Letting me know, forever.

I heard Blue Monday so much growing up I think I've developed a mild allergy to it. Temptation I really like tho.

It was awful!

Ceremony's one of my favorites too. As Adnan said, it is pretty Joy Divisiony. There are even early versions of it with Ian Curtis on vocals. Has anyone heard Galaxie 500's cover of Ceremony? It's quite good.
I'd recommend NO's album Power, Corruption and Lies. |

TT, you can't seem to shake me today.
Back in 1989 or 1990, I saw the "Monsters of Art" show in upstate New York. It featured Sugarcubes, New Order, and Public Image Limited. I went for PiL, of course. It was a great show!

I'm not partial to Morrissey either. I think that new song, 'Irish Blood, English Heart', is awful. He should've kept it as a poem.

I've got nothing against him, it is weird how people froth at the mouth over him tho. Met Boz Boorer at a party a few years ago. He loooks a little like Morrisey except he has a false front tooth he likes to take out.

Simon just hates bands from Manchester in general.
I am hearing really great things of one band from Manchester that have only played a couple of gigs. They have received numerous Pixies/Elliot Smith comparisons.
I'll not tell you what they are called though Simon, I'll wait 'til they are huge and you are claiming they are shit 'cos they are popular and from Manchester.

ah, that band sounds like mine, but i prefer pixies/fb/hefner/pavement/jonathan richman comparisons...
but yes, everything else from manchester is shit. which is annoying, as i love it here. why wouldn't hefner, blur (tries to think of more english bands he likes) or... erm... yeah, be from here.

Belle and Sebastian are, by far, the best band on the island. They're Scottish, it's almost like Manchester, isn't it?
Hefner are OK but that's all.

They are so twee, as they say!!!
I really like Blur Simon, but they are hardly the best British band ever!!! Surely you could have come up with someone better.
By the way have you heard Amplifier yet Simon? They are a new band from Manchester. I saw the last few tracks they played in support of Auf Der Maur at the Hop & Grape recently. They were OK, not great but they seem to be quite highly rated. Not your usual Manchester sound, that's for sure.
By the way, If I had been refering to your band, you would have known it. Still I am actually very surprised that you do not know who I am refering to. You have a close link.

not heard of that band you mentioned... surprising as i'm taking an active interest in small/new bands at the moment in the area.
