Are there any chess players on the forum?
There are so many nerds on the forum, so statistically, there should be some chess nerds as well.
What is your favorite opening? Your favorite defense?
I play English opening, Sicilian defense. I looooove fianchettos.
My favorite player is Bobby Fischer. Otherwise, I like Kasparov, and some older players, like Marshall. The only game I've really studied (well, read) is Fischer/Spassky in Rejkyavik. Probably the most interesting game ever, USA vs CCCP and all that...
The game of chess is probably one of the greatest achievements of communism, along with the Cuban cigars.

I love to play chess, but I don't know it very well at all. I very much look forward to learning.
I almost played with someone from this board a while ago, but yahoo games' servers were swamped.
I also like Cuban cigars.

If you want to learn about chess, the best web site is :
http://www.chessbase.com/
There is a player database, and a game database, so you can basically download any game that has been played in the last 150 years. You can even download the famous game played by Napoleon against the Automaton which has inspired Poe, I think, or games allegedly performed by Stalin. It's a Java applet, so you don't have to read stuff like "e5 x f6", it's like a cartoon.
I'm not a very good player, I'm very irregular. On Yahoo! my rating oscillates between 1250 and 1350, but I often beat players rated up to 1500, when they use a strategy I master well enough. And sometimes, very bad players beat me. The last game I've played, I won twice against a guy rated 1480, and he was furious, so he accused me of cheating. He played the sicilian defense, and I usually play it so I know which mistakes he could make.

Well, if I drink enough one night soon, I might play you. I'm scared. But how long til you are lost to the World of High Finance and Intrigue?
Thanks for the info on chess. I have been thinking about it a lot lately. I've run into a site about ZUGZWANG several times (ironically, through unrelated parallel researching) in the last few months. I was reading chess message boards a few days ago, relating to the AEGON chess tournament.

July 15th, I'm oficially becoming a workaholic yuppie. Not for long, hopefuly.
Many writers were chess obsessed. Nabokov was a great player (his first novel was about a chess player, the Loujine Defence), as well as the great majority of surrealists (some of them were international Grand Masters), Zweig, and Beckett I think.

I used to play chess all the time. Our third/fourth grade teacher had a chess club for us even, complete with a competition ladder. By the time we were in grade 6, myself and a friend of mine (from my school as well) were in the provincial finals with the stakes being an all-expenses-paid trip to Ottawa to compete in nationals. It was a close and tense game, and move-for-move we were pretty much matching each other evenly. It was only a matter of time until I slipped or he did, but I had an opening to 'slip up' and if he took the bait, I was two moves from checkmate. If he didn't, I wasn't going to lose the game that instant, but it was not going to be pretty. I moved my bishop.
He took the bait, almost. He had his hand on his player (I think it was his queen) and even picked it up. Then he looked up at me, and I think he saw in my face that was exactly what I'd wanted. I get this stupid smirk when I'm lying/trying to get away with something. I can only imagine the corners of my mouth were already tugged up in anticipation.
He put the queen down, re-evaluated, and took his advantage as I had offered it up to him. That was the game, Joel off to Ottawa, me back home with my second place certificate.
It was a fair victory and I can only curse my lack of poker face for that loss. When we left that school in grade 6, that was pretty much the end of my chess career. I still have fun playing it, but the sad part is I know I was better when I was 12 than I am now, so it's always a little frustrating to play at the same time.
That's my tale of woe, sadness, and work-avoidance. I'd still be up for playing you sometime Adnan, but I can't promise much of a fight anymore. :)

Basically, if he picks up the Queen, then he has to play with the Queen, so your friend cheated. Dean, I'm sorry to tell you this, but you should have gone to Ottawa.

I'm pretty sure you can pick up the player... but if you let it go and it's not on its original tile then you're stuck.

I love/hate chess. I used to play it everyday and have studied some openings and defenses. But when I play, it stresses me out to the point of swearing I'll never play again. I love the game, but hate playing it. Adnan, I'll play you on yahoo sometime or world chess net if you have an account. |

I used to be the US Chess Federation. I actually won some money. I've never played on yahoo! though. Maybe I should sign up, I'd like to take you on Adnan...
This girl I know, her little brother is ridiculously good. He beat me in about 5 minutes while reading a magazine. I used to play hundreds of games when I was in college, but then I quit. I think I've played 10 games in the past 2 or 3 years.
But hell yeah, let's take on. And chess isn't Nerdy anymore |

I tried to get into chess when I was a kid (probably largely due to liking Through the Looking-Glass), but I was never any good, and I kind of lost interest. I'm not much for strategy games, or strategy in general, really.

I used to go to congresses and stuff as a kid I was really into it. I used to work with the best under 21 player in europe (or something) but he quit due to him being 17 and there being to much pressure, apparently a camera crew once came to his house to film him playing his mum. I recently tried to play it on yahoo but Im so shit at it now.

I've got a 1250-1300 rating on playsite, but i swear half the people on that site have a computer chess game going next to them and enter your moves into their game so essentially you are playing their computer chess module. I too was much better at chess as wee bairn, now I'm a nihilist, the quicker the game the better, I don't care about winning anymore.

Chess is incredible addictive, so I try not to play. I've only studied one opening - kings gambit, which may be risky - but few master it at any level so it usually gives an opening advantage - or at least an interesting game. F4 is also a great answer when playing against a sicillian defense. yeah. Also, i always solve a combination before i go to sleep. Best sleep medicine yet.
