There is no imagination, no creativity. "Titanic", "Pearl Harbor", "The Alamo". No one wants to think of an interesting title anymore.
It's not so hard: instead of "Marine Corp." it's "Full Metal Jacket", instead of "Cuban Missle Crisis" it's "13 Days", instead of "Tina Turner" it's "What's Love Got To Do With It?".
In movies now, they're more concerned about the new special effects and all the different ways they can show people dying.

Yeah, yet they still can't get that CGI to look real. It's still looks unnatural, or synthetic. The motion and lighting on CGI just doesn't match with what's real. I honestly don't understand how people think it looks real. Plus, I'm not impressed by special effects as much as I am a good story.

I'm just plain tired of remakes, it's sad even some of the more respected filmmakers are still doing some shitty remakes lately. See Tim Burton.

I agree about special effect Tartar unless they genuinely enhance thestory which they so seldom do. There's so many McMovies out there now,and a total lack of creativity. The sad thing is, genuniely good films get passed up by the general public through lack of the massive ad campaigns that most blockbusters recieve, and this makes the execs lazy, knowing that they can bash out popcorn and pepsi movies in next to no time, bag a big star, sell a million seats and repeat until their pockets are bursting. I'm looking forward to the day when he masses learn what hype is and start avoiding shitty sequels and remakes but some how I can't see it happening. Oh well the odd good movies slips through, you just have to look past the slick, slimy entity that hollywood has become.

When someone describes a movie as having "great special effects," I take it to mean it had little or no plot and file it under "do not see."
==edit== Actually I should probably rephrase part of what I said. Sometimes I don't even mind "little or no plot." A lack of interesting characters is what really bothers me. |

There is too much money in film-making now. Producers need to guarantee bringing in the sums of money that they are spending so they go for the easy, money gauranted option of a sequel or remake.
It's like that Cat In The Hat film that has just come out. The books are so short, you wonder how the hell they have made a movie out of them, but they knew that familiarity with the character would guarantee sales.
That said though, there are still some very good films being made. You just need to be a good judge from trailers and reviews. I find that I usually am. Like BLT said, if a film is described as having 'great special effects' first and foremost, then it is probably crap.

This week I watched "Stuck On You"- it was pretty boring ( and it wastes two Pixies songs: the first half of "Here Comes Your Man" during the opening credits, and part of "La La Love You" during a scene with Cher ) still it has a few very funny scenes. The agent in his electric wheelchair is great.
I also watched "The Good Girl"- what a shitty movie. All the actors are great ( and it even has the stepmom from "Strangers With Candy"), the problem is that all the characters are made out to be dumb and simple. The characters also do very dumb things, especially Jennifer Aniston's character. |
