No, this post is not about that wicked Pulp song.
I’m talking about the real thing here, having babies. I know of at least two brave regulars to the forum having mentioned being parents. I’m guessing the average age on this board is around early twenties, most of the folks on here are a good ten years away from even starting to think about having kids. My friends and I are hitting our mid-thirties and during the past month two couples have announced they have a baby on the way.
In a year I’ll have to baby-proof the house when they come over, my cats will have to learn new survival skills and conversation will be about disposable diapers and not the new Frank Black album. The times they are a-changing.

Yep, we got breeders a-plenty on this here board, me included.
You'd be surprised how much small children love Frank Black.
I must tell you, you'll be lucky if you talk about diapers. More than likely, your friends will talk about poop. A LOT. Enjoy. ; )

I've got 2 of them. The worse is that your friends might not come over as often for the first year. Parenting is tiring work and a far bigger change than living with someone or getting married. My first year I had a hard time giving up my independence (free time to do what you want). I remember craving sitting down and reading the paper with a good cup of coffee (or going to a movie). |

Half an hour after my post another friend calls me from London. She is having a baby in October. Good to hear the kiddies like FB, I won't be playing Barney cd's when my friends come over.

If you want a cool kid CD for guests, They Might be Giants put one out about 2 years ago (No!). Other that I say go with Woody Guthrie, Ella Jenkins, and Pete Seeger. |

Yeah, they're all right about Frank Black. Little kids do seem to like him. And you maynotice I've not been posting a lot lately, that's because I have a <1 year old in the house. If I have time to post on the forum, I have time to sleep. I remember my dr saying, regarding Stella (our first) "That first year is the hardest" mostly because of the sleep factor. Also because you do lose not necessarily your independence, but your spontanaety about EVERYTHING (not just sex). I remember about a month before Stella was born, we noticed that Frank Black was playing in Chicago and we were deciding whether we should take the Monday after off work and go see the show. It took a minute and then I said, "Hon, we HAVE to go. This will be the last time we can ever do something like this unplanned and at the last minute and not have to worry about getting a sitter and such. We MUST GO."
And that's the thing about kids. You CAN have your grownup life back, but you have to plan for it, either arranging for a sitter, or figuring out a way to include the kids in your grown up life. We've seen a lot of bands at outdoor festivals, etc., because of this, and we only go to clubs about 5% of the time we used to.
Worth it? Yes. It sounds cliche, but you can't put a price in $$$ or in life for those moments when you look at your little sweetie poo and think "S/he's my best song."

BTW. There is no such thing as baby-proofing or child-proofing a house. You can only make it child-resistant.
And the cats somehow know that these are little ones and not to fuck with the babies. Something about how all animals know not to fuck with a larger animal's young, especially if the mother is around.
And the conversation WILL be about the new Frank Black album. They will be grateful to talk about a topic other than the teletubbies, or the smell of baby vomit.

There's nothing like children to clean up your life. They make you understand what's really important, what's secondary, what's vain, stupid or dangerous. They make you think, they make you decide, they get you to act. If some of your friends seem to forget you, let them forget you, and forget them - you won't lose anything. Having a baby is like a second birth.

Right on. Did you look in my car's cassette holder?
I don't really like my kids watching much TV, however... WoodyGurthrie.Org has a cute video of his music for kids.

My daughter really likes one of my favorite old folkies, Utah Phillips.
It's kinda surreal to see a 4-year-old sing "Dump The Bosses"

My daughter is 10, I'm 31, she recently went to her first arena-type concert (barenaked ladies). Her mom took her. We both like TMBG. She thinks it's weird how much I like FB, but doesn't complain when I put it on the way she does with other music. We have a deal, I play one of my CD's then she gets to play one of hers. Kids are cool. Blackpurse is right though, you have to plan, plan, plan to be able to do all the things you want.

My friend Shannon recently had a baby and at the shower I realised that I will never and SHOULD never have children... I am still very much one. I can't even take care of myslef far less someone else. And I'm fine with that.

I want to marry a really fertile woman and have girl quadruplets and name them Charity, Chastity, Prudence, and Hope! And just 1 boy, I will name him Riot. Every time I tell a girl I want lots of kids they kinda freak, they're all like "I just want 1 or 2", BAH!

A while ago I called up to some friends and their fouryearold son said when he heard the knock, though I hadn't been there for more than a week,'If that's Owen I'll be really happy.'

Well, I'm not a parent, but I became an uncle for the first time on April 13th, sadly overshadowed by the rebirth of the Pixies. Sorry, kid. I was in Minneapolis when you were born.

I work with kids, but can't stand the music they make them listen to.
They seem to love,
Jonathon Richmond (who I claim is Raffi for adults) Beach Boys REM W. Guthrie (who wrote hundreds of songs for his children)

I love babies. I used to be a nanny for a newborn (and was at the birth) and I also did a cooperative care thing for four kids from when they were 1 until they were 2-ish. Now many of my best friends have kids, including twin girls. They are super fun. I can't wait to have kids of my own, but first I need money and sperm. :)

hehehe, exactly.
My son had groucho eyebrows and moustache for weeks.
He also drew all over my couch with this permanent marker. So when I had the grand mal spaz I yelled "D what the hell is that" to which he replied simply "Its a snake".

See this topic for my kid's story: http://forum.frankblack.net/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7365
I'm 27, have a 3-year-old daughter, and one on the way. Believe me, I keep up with Frank Black and The Pixies pretty good. Not as well as I used to, but that may be due to my not keeping up with technology. My daughter won't let me put anything in besides Frank Black. I don't really know if she understands that there are different bands yet, but she seems to like it. Kids are hard work, but when things happen like the forum topic I mentioned above, you realize you don't know what you would do without them. I do recommend not having kids too young though, as I enjoyed that time too.
