How many times am I going to have this conversation in my life time when talking to someone about music?

ME: Ever heard of Frank Black?

THEM: [puzzled] No...

ME: Ever heard of the Pixies?

THEM: Yeah.

ME: He was in the Pixies

Does this happen to anyone else regularly?

all the fucking time, people are idiots and have really bad taste

I think all those people are blasting Journey's greastest hits on their cheap ass stereos as I write

I get that all the time

I don't even try anymore, go on with your Incubus and the Darkness and whatever trend is up your ass this week

It's like me asking what Jainism is...

But then you have to say something like,

"When he was in the Pixies he was called Black Francis, but he changed his name to Frank Black."

And about at this point you feel like a fanatic dork.

yep, and if they still don't know, you're like, remember that song Canonball, yeah that's the Breeders, yeah they're sisters, and Kim was the bass player and did vocals too for the Pixies, yeah that was with Frank Black or whatever... yeah

And he has his own band, the Catholics, actually they're the greatest band of all time in my humble little motherfucking opinion...

I use to be in a similar situation but that conversation goes like this:

ME: Ya know Dick Dale...

THEM: WHO?

ME: You, king of the surf guitar?

THEM: who?

ME (tired): First song in pulp fiction, everybody be cool this is a robbery

THEM: Oh. that's him?

most of the times goes even worse for me:

ME: Ever heard of Frank Black?

THEM: [puzzled] No...

ME: Ever heard of the Pixies?

THEM: No.

ME: He was in the Pixies

THEM: Yeah, but who were they?

ME: Have you seen the movie " Fight Club"?

THEM: No but i've seen Seven (ME--->goes for another beer without adding another word)

or

THEM: Yes

ME: The song that plays during the end credits is by the pixies and Frank Black was their singer.

THEM:
1)Don't remember the end credits song
2)Big deal of a group if their most famous song ended in the end credits of a movie

ME: Why the hell do i insist asking questions if i already know the answer?

No one I know knew of the Pixies or FB until they had to listen to me go on and on about them. Even in college, except for one person. It's even a push to find people who have heard of The Breeders.

Heh, yeah, it's a sad chain of events:

FB (2%) -> Pixies (15%) -> Breeders (20%) -> Fight Club (3% remember/know the song) -> Nirvana (75%) -> Self-induced suicide (93%)

I get the same reactions most of you described. People are idiots. I've found that those folk who were open minded enough to let me turn them on to Frank became fans. And then I hear the question "this is great! How come he dosen't get air play?" And then I say---people are idiots.

HAhahaha...funny you mention Journey... which by the way is the audio equivalent of a vomit soaked shag carpet.

My boss made me listen to Journey's greatest hits 3 times in a row because I made a sarcastic comment about lkoving some song about wheels turning... I almost killed him, seriously. I know some people.:P

He hates the pixies by the way.
So I make sure to play the pixies as long as they sit on the shelf.

And he is a horrible person who laughs at the weakness of others.
I don't think anyone would have missed him.

Here's a conversation I just had the other day with a girl who asked who my favorite band is:

HER: So who's your favorite band?
ME: Frank Black and the Catholics
HER: Is that a Catholic band?
ME: No, that's just what they're called.
HER: Oh, I've never heard of them.
ME: Have you ever heard of the Pixies?
HER: Yeah.
ME: Well Frank Black is the same as Black Francis from the Pixies
HER: Oh. (I don't think she knew who Black Francis was, but I don't know)
ME: So what bands do you like?
HER: Blink 182, Thursday, Linkin Park...(after that I just kind-of tuned out of the conversation)

Or if they haven't seen Fight Club, you say "What about Pump up the Volume with Christian Slater?", and then they say "No, but I saw Heathers", and you say "well, The Pixies weren't in Heathers but Christian Slater's character played Wave of Mutilation, one of The Pixies best songs in Pump up the Volume", then they look at you with a blank look and you say "OK, I'LL MAKE YOU A TAPE, FUCK!"

Why is 'monosyllabic' such a long word?

I find myself tuning out a lot.
I hate to be a music snob...but after knowing what good taste is, you can't help but shake your head when people obviously aren't so much listening to the music as just having it as a background noise as they drift through life.
It makes me sad to see so many people not even taking an interest in good music.

I've been through this conversation countless numbers of times. In school, it usually goes something along the lines of:

Them: So, what kind of bands are you into?
Me: Well, I really love Frank Black.
Them: Hmmm, can't say I know him.
Me: You know the Pixies?
Them: Never heard of them.
Me: Well, Frank Black now has a band called the Catholics, but he used to be in the Pixies.
Them: Sorry, doesn't ring any bells.
Me: Well, have you ever seen me walking down the halls between classes mumbling something to myself about slicing up eyeballs or caribou?
Them: Thats' you?

It's about then that they run off in fear, realizing that they are talking to a crazy person, someone with decent taste in music.

Aloha means goodbye, and also hello.

We can only hope that after this guy sees the Pixies he'll be wondering why he ever liked The Faint (whoever the hell THEY are). Before I first heard the Pixies I was into Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc. They were the popular groups of the time. Nirvana loved the Pixies, though I didn't know it at the time. However, after I heard the Pixies, I never turned back. I hope this guy will see the light. A lot of other unfortunate souls will be getting their first dose of the Pixies because of this tour, and there will be new diehard fans. Hopefully a year from now we'll be having far fewer of these conversations. I've always enjoyed the fact that the Pixies were like my own little secret, but hey, I don't want to be selfish. Others should experience this. Know what I mean?

I have these conversations about 5 times a year, on the average.

However, what would be real impressive, is if you had this conversation with someone at a Frank Black concert. Now that doesn't happen too often.

Yes, I've had that conversation many a times. Most recently, Saturday:

Me: Ever heard of Frank Black?
Guy: Yeah
Me: Cool, OK, The Bennies opened up for them during their Nov 2002 tour

So that was a good one...didn't have to name drop the Pixies! Now get this, this fucking scarecrow looking tool at work the other day...we have access to Rhapsody (online music service) at work, and a bunch of computers have access...so there's 3 different departments listening to 3 different things. I think one wanker was listening to "modern rock" shit on his (radio shit), and another tool was listening to like, 80s rock hits or something. This fucking cunt had the balls to walk up to my speakers and:

Cunt: Hey man, you mind if I turn this down?
Me: Uh, why?
Cunt: Well, everybody else is blasting music too and theirs is a little more appropriate for the morning.
Me: *shakes head in disgust and continues working*

I'm still hung up over that...what a fucking asshole! I was listening to OOIOO at the time (and this was a very accessable song, "Jackson's Club"). I should have gone full-out music snob on him, such as:

Me: Are you a musician? Do you play an instrument? OK, when you learn how to play an instrument, *then maybe* we'll talk.

Me: Sure you can turn it down if you tell me what the greatest album ever recorded was? (then laugh at his pathetic answer)

Fucking cunt.

Man, youre such a snob Jim, haha, but thats pretty funny.

I have had that conversation to many times to remember. Luckily, due to my excessive talking about him, all my *real* friends know who he is now. No conversions yet. I think more people ahve heard of them in england tho..helps if they are from an older generation as well.

shiny happy customer:Is this new nickelback good?
Me: to be honest with you, I think nickelback sucks. So I don't listen to it.
customer: Well what DO you listen to?
Me: A little bit of everything.(I really don't want to list everything I like because most likely they won't know who the hell I'm talking about)
Customer:Well that's cool...I usually just listen to the radio.

Or this is my favorite...

Because It's a used CD store people always ask...

"Is this CD defective?"
or
"Is there anything wrong with the CD?"

Now I can't figure out who would be more of a moron here.
Us, for selling defective CD's, or this dumbass for buying them.

If I'm introducing someone to the Pixies, usually following the above conversations (the current top is the 'Fight Club' route), I'll try 'Where is My Mind', then for the girls, 'Gigantic'.

Other suggestions?

Oh god I know these conversations too well. I just had one a few days ago. And it went a little something like this (hit it)

HER: So what bands do you like? Linkin Park, Sum 41...
ME: I like The White Stripes and Weezer.
HER: Oh I love them. (starts singing Fell In Love With A Girl *sigh*)
ME: I'm also a huge Pixies and Frank Black fan.
HER: Who are they?
ME: YOU DON'T KNOW THE PIXIES!!
HER: No, what are they like a soft rock band or something.
ME: Far from it. Have you ever seen Fight Club?
HER: Not yet, I've been meaning to though is it good?
ME: Yeah, but that's not my point. They basiclly started Alternative music.
HER: Really (with bored look on her face)
ME: So what do you listen to?
HER: What do you mean, like music? (no shit)
ME: Yeah.
HER: I like Sublime, Linkin Park, 311... (I stop listening by then)

I feel so alone. I mean I love having both Frank and The Pixies to myself but I wish I could talk to someone at school about Nadine. Or at least, at least Los Angeles!! Something other than, when I'm lucky to find someone that knows of the Pixies, Here Comes Your Man or Monkey Gone To Heaven.

We say we care, but look away.
