I dunno, I'm in college now, Umass, so pretty much everyone I know knows and loves the Pixies. Frank Black is another story, it's usually "oh, haven't got a chance to check out his solo stuff". I've given up trying to force it on them, though I might put a cd on once in awhile. With me it's usually "hey do you know The Fall?" "no". or "ive heard of them". (The Fall and FB are my two uber favs)

Slightly off topic:
Hey Itchload, did you catch The Fall on their current tour? I don't know if they played near you or not. They're here (L.A.) May 14 and I got a ticket...haven't seen them for 10 years.

I just missed the Fall, they played about two towns over from where I live in a club called Maxwells. Goddamned 18 plus shows. I really don't know them that well, I only have "This Nation's Saving Grace" but I really like it. Someday I'll be old enough to see the bands I like live. Until then, I'll just have to listen from the safety of my room.

I know what you mean, but would you really want posers knowing who the pixies are?!!! I think the pixies are special and I don't mind if nobody know who they are. That's probably part of what makes them so special.

I don't mean to sound condescending, but I used to feel that way when I was younger and it's changed. The realities of the world are that you need money to eat and put a roof over your head. An artist of Frank's talent doesn't deserve to toil in obscurity.

The BE-ALL and END-ALL of "Have you ever heard of Frank Black?" conversations:

ME: Ever heard of Frank Black?
OTHER PERSON: No. Who's He?
ME: You know God?
OTHER PERSON: Yeah...
ME: Well, on the seventh day, he didn't rest, he created Frank Black!!!

:)

(O.K., maybe that's a BIT extreme)

The problem I commonly run into, though, is not that they haven't heard of him, it's that they haven't HEARD him. It's weird, but a lot of people I've played music with KNOW the Pixies and have at least HEARD OF Frank. But the relationship ends there. they always say, "Oh, I never got a chance to hear his stuff", or "I don't think I'd like it", etc..

In Japan, there are a few fans of Pixies, but they don't have any interest in FB & TC. They look on Pixies as a founder of "alternative" rock music and assume FB & TC outdated. Their only hope for Frank is to scream with his queer voice (like "Tame").

I enjoy listening to FB & TC every day. Their songs have the newness which is not bored. Frank's innovation of music is not only the queer voice but also something shakes audience. I expect that re-union tour lead many people to Frank's music and some of them get interested in FB & TC.

Sorry, my broken English.

I've recently found a huge following of The Pixies in my school! I was sat in the common room the other day, explaining to someone who they were & singing 'Where is my mind' to prove my point about the whole fight club thing (she recognised it!)
Then this girl I dont talk to so much (she doesnt seem to like me much cos I 'stole her name') came up behind me and said 'OH MY FUCKIN GOD!' (This is a church school) & started singin 'La la love you' & started listing her fave pixies songs :) then she mentioned how much her & several of our other mates really wanted to see them but only just found out about the reunion tour..... then she got jealous!

This scene is taking place during an IT course where we were learning how to use Access databases. Of course, the dialogue was originally performed in French, this is an approximative translation.

ME : Euh, hi.
HER : Hi.
ME : Do you mind if I check something on the internet? [we were sharing a computer for the exercise]
HER: No, go ahead.
ME: Logging on FB.net with "adnan le terrible" nick
HER : *smiling*
ME: Have you heard of Frank Black?
HER: From the Pixies? Of course I know him. They're going to reunite, aren't they?
ME : You like the Pixies?
HER : Yeah, a lot. But I don't know much about Frank Black, only that song named "Headache".
ME: Well you should check out the album with "Headache" on it, it's called Teenager and it's brilliant. Otherwise, his last solo album, SMYT, is very good.
HER : Sure, I will.

Now I hear you all fb.net forum members saying "this is a perfect girl." The truth is, she was ugly, so I ended the conversation very quickly and started my exercise on the computer.

You think it's easy to be named "Adnan" in France? I have to spell my name 100 times when I meet someone. When I meet girls at the night club, they often misunderstand and call me Adrian or Adam the next day...

Irish version of conversation:

A: Ever heard of Frank Black?

B: Think so. Didn't she sing 'A Woman's Heart'?

A: No, she's a he.

B: Who am I thinking of?

A: Frances Black.

B: That's it then. Never heard of him.

A: Have you heard of the Pixies?

B: Yes.

I've stopped having conversations about music with colleagues years ago. Actually I've stopped having conversations about music with anyone except a few friends. I've never found anyone who likes Frank Black in this town, there is one small record shop which stocks his cd's but they've been sitting on the shelf for a long time. In this town Frank is all mine.

It could be worse, folks. My birthday was right before Easter, so my gf bought me a ticket to the Minneapolis show as a gift. Two days before the event, we're at her family's house for Easter dinner and one of her aunts pipes up asking, "So, you're going to Minneapolis, I hear?"

ME: Yes. I'm driving there to see a show.
GRANDMOTHER: A SHOW? It must be some show if you'll drive all that way. What sort of show is it?
ME: It's a rock band called the Pixies.
GRANDMOTHER, GF'S MOTHER, SEVERAL AUNTS (in unison): Oh, that's so CUUUUUTE!

Fortunately I did not go to that dinner with the intent of convincing a bunch of old ladies to make the road trip with me.

Hey BLT, sorry for the late reply. I did, I actually saw them at the Maxwell's gig Sir Rockabye missed. They were fantastic, MES gave me a beer.

Sadly, the show in LA has been cancelled! The whole tour has ended shortly, MES has yet to make a statement, but he shattered his hip and femur early in the tour (he's been performing with crutches) and it's presumed the pain is just too great for him to continue.

I am SO glad I'm not the only one who has to explain "the kind of music they play" with "well, Nirvana ripped them off, sort of"... when NIRVANA SOUND NOTHING LIKE THE PIXIES!!! It's just the easiest way to get across some vague, vague notion of what the Pixies might vaguely sound like to the average Top 40 retard. I feel so ashamed afterwards.

I had this conversation once, before Coachella.

Me: are you going to Coachella?
Her: no, no money. and it's too hot anyway. why are you?
Me: damn right, i'm seeing the Pixies!!
Her: you like the Pixies?
Me: like know other. also get to see radiohead too.
Her: radiohead, i love radiohead.
Me: yeah their good, but The Pixies!! The Pixies!!
Her: you want to see The Pixies more than Radiohead? (with confused look)

What kind of a question is that. Radiohead would want to see The Pixies more then Radiohead.

But that's only my opinion, I could be wrong.

Radiohead are not fit to clean the pixies toenails, evil little men, I'm pretty lucky as my sister is an uber fan so I'v got at least one person to blab on to. My boyfriend tolerates my frank obsession, although he's not a fan, but then again he likes prog the most annoying drawn out and pretentious genre of music (shudder)

Jumping in a little late here, but as far as I'm concerned a much worse, and equally common conversation is:

Me: Ever hear of Jonathan Richman?
Them: no...
Me: Ever see "Something about Mary?...

You end up having to do a lot more awkwardly fannish, "well, he's an actual musician, and he did a lot of stuff prior to that movie..." type of thing.
