Having just got ASDL I am going through a downloading frenzy, however I have come across downloaders block, as the thought of having a vast amount of music at my fingertips has blown my mind. Also being in China I don't really get to hear about the latest decent albums that have been released...
What decent albums have been released in the last two years, or what albums are a necessity for anyones collection (Obviously no need to include Pixies / FB stuff as I brought that stuff over with me when I came to China)?

Franz Ferdinand's self-titled debut is a definite check out in my mind. My favourite new record of the year thus far.

I second De-Loused by The Mars Volta, and I want to get Franz Ferdinand. From what I've heard, they're pretty tasty. |

I second that.
I've recently been listening to Cass McCombs' 'A'. Pretty good stuff. Nothing ground breaking or revolutionary, but it's a nice set of songs. I quite like the Von Bondies new album 'Pawn Shoppe Heart', but I prefer their first from 2001 'Lack of Communication'. You might fancy downloading a couple of tracks of Bloc Party ('Banquet' for example). Also, have a listen to the Secret Hairdresser. I doubt you'll find them on soulseek or anything, but you can get all their tracks (I think) from here ~ http://www.thesecrethairdresser.tk/

If all the weak songs and amusing-the-first-time-only fillers had been tossed from the Outkast double, 'twould have made a decent single record.

Soviet Kitsch by Regina Spektor. Excellent anti-folk from alphabet city, ny. She sang on a recent strokes b-side and has been touring with them. She's unique and definately worth checking out.

I liked M83's album from last year, 'Dead Cities, Red Seas & Losy Ghosts' - like My Bloody Valentine with beats. Check out some stuff from Hope Of The States and Ella Guru - their albums are not out yet, but the work in progress is phenomenal. Damien Rice we are liking muchly, last Nick Cave was cool...

Hey Floop I am waiting for the Dios album to arrive. I ordered it from Amazon the other day 'cos I liked what I heard when I saw them supporting The Shins and The Stills last week in Manchester.
I would recommend
'Chutes Too Narrow' by The Shins 'Oh, Inverted World' by The Shins 'Fever To Tell' by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs 'Pawn Shop Heart' by The Von Bondies 'Coral Fang' by The Distillers Stellastarr*'s self titled debut 'Horse Of The Dog' by The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster 'Chain Gang Of Love' by The Raveonettes 'Keep On Your Mean Side' by The Kills 'Room On Fire' by The Strokes 'Turn On The Bright Lights' by Interpol 'Elephant' by The White Stripes 'Youth And Young Manhood' by Kings Of Leon 'Up The Bracket' by The Libertines 'The Beginning Stages Of' by The Polyphonic Spree 'The Strangest Things' by Longwave 'Amazing Grace' by Spiritualized 'Bows And Arrows' by The Walkmen 'See This Through And Leave' by Cooper Temple Clause 'At Dawn' by My Morning Jacket Auf Der Maur's self titled debut Franz Ferdinand's self titled debut
And anything you can get your hands on from the following bands that have not released their debut albums yet:
The Killers My Red Cell Bloc Party Yourcodenameis:milo
Hansel and Gretel have formed a band, .....And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Breadcrumbs!!! |

Cheers guys for this..... man I haven't heard of half of these bands, but I guess thats a result of being out here where all that is sold is the old stuff, and not enough of that. I have a day off today so I'll be downloading like a terrorist.... nice one!

Yeah, No Cities Left is pretty tasty... I love... LOVE... Lost in the Plot. I got to sing along with Murray at their show in Saskatoon last year (sort of). I think the song was "A Dear Caught In Headlights". :)
It's a long story, but a good album.

My ISP only allows 3GB of data transfer on the ADSL acount. I had to buy 3GB more but still I exceeded 6GB. Downloading the Pixies through bittorrent proved costly, huge files plus the uploads also count towards the total usage. My ADSL has been suspended till May so I'm back on dial up. Oh and rather try Calexico than Mars Volta, they're much better.

Phoenix - Alphabetical as I already said: coolest french band in the world or anything by Tahiti 80, the freshest french pop band in the world.
These two bands know how to make your summer alright.

I downloaded some Mars Volta stuff and couldn't get into them. I also downloaded some stuff by Sparta and really really dug the music but HATED the singing. Made it unlistenable to me, but everyone's tastes are different, so someone out there must like 'em.

I don't really keep up on new music, but here's some stuff that's come out in about the last year that I like:
Ween - quebec Dirtbombs - never can remember the title... dirty magic? eh, it's the 2003 album by the Dirtbombs Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks - Pig Lib Hot Snakes - Suicide Invoice (this is actually close to 2 years old, but oh well) Paul Westerberg - Come Feel Me Tremble (haven't really listened to this much yet, but it's great from what I've heard, you should also check out Stereo and Mono... Mono is under the alter ego Grandpaboy)

Next to Frank Black, my favorite artist currently making records is a man named Stew (he also leads a band called The Negro Problem). His latest album Something Deeper Than These Changes is timeless pop for grown-ups (Stew is in his early 40s) about lots of uncool stuff.
His masterpiece though is the 2002 album The Naked Dutch Painter and Other Songs. |

Ive been looking for Pig Lib on KaZaa, but so far been only able to download one track.
It is weird also, I have been downloading my favorite Lemonhead tunes, and want to get my hands on Big Gay Heart as it's a cracking song. When I do a search on Lemonheads usually every song off of Come On Feel comes up, but no BGH.

A friend of mine recommended the Hot Snakes to me, told me that based on my favorite bands (Pixies, Frank, Pavement...) that I would like them. How would you describe them, and what album of theirs would you recommend? I know that you put up "Suicide Invoice", but is that because it’s "recent and decent" or because it’s their best album? Thanks.
