Spokane Spokane. The night started off ok. The opening band, Alien Crime Syndicate sucked I thought, but thats one mans opinion. After sitting through too many of their songs and waiting through gear setup the lights finally dimmed. Out walk the Pixies and of course the crowd went insane. They opened with Subbacultcha and about half way through the song they decided it wasnt going well. It seemed to me Kim was continually screwing up and Frank looked her way a few times. So they put all their gear down and went backstage and tried it again, again opening with Subbacultcha. The second time seemed to go better. They blazed through all the songs with little banter. Set list includes:
Subbacultcha Is She Weird? Dead Cactus Ed is Dead I Bleed Monkey Gone to Heaven Broken Face Bone Machine Levitate Me #13 Baby Velouria Hey Debaser Gigantic Tame Gouge Away Where is My Mind? Here Comes Your Man Nimrod's Son Vamos In Heaven/Wave of Mutilation
Encore: Wave of Mutilation Crackity Jones Isla de Encanta Something Against You Caribou
This list is completely accurate, I was lucky enough to get the set list and went right down list. During the Vamos extended solo Joey played the Jeopardy theme. I thought that was cool. Has anyone else noticed different riffs he plays during that song? In Minneapolis he played the riff from Where is My Mind. Highlights from the show include: The Pixies, Joey's Vamos solo and Kim Deal. Low points from the show: ACS, scenesters/hipsters and crowd surfing. And someone puked right in the middle of the the floor. When the show was over it was everywhere, and it was repulsive. Thank you Pixies. |

OK, I just got back (4 hour drive, so sue me) and I listened to the show twice already. The whole walk out in the middle of Subbaculture was totally planned. You could tell then, with the smiles from Kim and on Davids face. And listening to it, the fact that they all stop at the exact same time and without missing a beat Kim asks "are we going to ditch it?" confirms that it was planed.
If anyone disses Kim on this show like others they are truely on crack, especially since the Disc Live is very mixed very Kim heavy whenever she sings.
In my opinion the warm up was over. Aside from Joey screwing up on "Here Comes Your Man" it was perfect. Oh, and Kim and Frank starting a conversation during the opening of "Gigantic" only to have Kim cut Frank off by starting the vocals at the right moment. Very cute.
Damn great show. Glad that I could see them in a club setting. Although I'll still see them at Bumpershoot and probably once or twice after that.
They sounded excellent. Great show. Great damn show. |

Best show ever!
I had a spot right up against the rail on a level a couple of steps above the main floor on the Kim side of the stage. Perfect unobstructed view of the stage. They looked and sounded great, and it was a great setlist. The crowd was very into it and I think just about everyone in there could sing along with every song.
Kim had a huge shit-eating grin on her face all night, and really seemed to be having fun. |

Incredible show.
I would guess that the majority of the 1500 in the audience were from out of town. We met, spoke with, ran into people from such far away places as New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, San Francisco, Connecticut, and England, and I believe there was a substantial Seattle contingent in town last night as well.
Just to breeze through my own experience pretty quickly. My wife and I got down to the restaurant at about 3:30 which allowed us to occupy one of the comfy booths with couches. After some difficulty flagging down the guy with the passes, we finally ended up with a couple of 'E's. Not as good as we had hoped, but as the guy told us, that would still put us in the doors within the first hundred of the sellout crowd. A couple of hours relaxing, a bit of pasta, and a few Rolling Rocks later and we were ready to go in.
The first thing we noticed upon entering the hall was that the tables and chairs that normally occupy the bar and balcony areas had all been cleared out. This quickly made up my mind to go for the front barrier. A buddy and I grabbed a spot at stage right (approximately between Frank and Kim) and settled in for the rest of the evening. Also noted was that the large video screens flanking the stage were not turned on last night. Not sure why that was. Did anyone else notice if the concert was broadcast through the other video monitors throughout the Big Easy?
I realize that the general opinion around here is that most people don't seem to be too overly fond of Alien Crime Syndicate. I've been listening to Joe Reineke's music since way back when he was in The Mieces. I really like his voice and songwriting. ACS didn't blow me away, but I felt that they provided a solid opening set. Let's face it, we were all there to see the main act really, so whoever was opening was just gravy in any event. Anyway, a decent bunch of guys. We spoke to Jeff the bass player outside of the venue after the show and I bought a copy of their new CD. They appeared to be genuinely excited for the opportunity to open up for the Pixies. Also of note, drummer Nabil Ayers is the man behind the Sonic Boom record store chain.
Then came the waiting for our heroes. A buddy of mine writes for a local weekly (the Inlander) and so had a pass to go into the photo pit between the barrier and the stage for the first three songs. We were making fun of him since the pro photo gear he was going to use didn't arrive and so had to borrow a small digital camera instead (meanwhile, the other photographer in the photo pit was loaded down with a heavy duty camera, zoom lens, etc.). His vantage did allow him to see the set list that was taped down to the stage though, so we knew what the first few songs were going to be before they came out on stage.
It seemed that the opening pair of Subbacultcha (complete with false start) and Is She Wierd? made for a slow build up, but then they really kicked in with Dead. Our spot right at the front made for excellent viewing. There was quite a crush towards the stage, but nothing I couldn't handle. The occasional crowd surfers were a bit annoying, but the security guys down front were really good about signalling when people were coming over the top and I only got kicked in the head once.
I really don't have a whole lot to add about the show itself. The band seemed to be enjoying themselves, and other than a couple of gaffes I noticed were very tight. As mentioned up page, the impression I got was that if they've been on a 'warm up tour', last night proved that they have arrived in full force. It was hard to tell exactly what was going on behind me, but my perception was that the crowd was very much into it with sections of many songs turning into virtual singalongs. At the end of their set the whole band came out to the front of the stage to take a bow and soak in the gushing adulation of the audience. Kim was still standing there smiling and staring into the balcony as the rest of the band exited and someone had to tap her shoulder to let her know that everyone else was walking off. The encore was played without the house lights on.
Afterwards, I fought my way out and into the hallway to try to score a CD, but was informed that they were sold out (fortunately I was able to place an order online this morning). Then I had to fight my way back in past the outporing exiters like a fish spawning upstream. We hung out for a while until the Club Fusion crowd began to take over and then left; hung outside for a bit, chatted with the ACS crew and then hopped off for some breakfast.
Again, an incredible experience. The concert of a lifetime with ringing ears and sore ribs this morning to remind me of the previous evening. I hope that all the visitors from out of town enjoyed their brief stay in Spokane and had a great time at the show.
On to Boise! |

I'm going through my Disclive recording of the show (excellent I might add) and you need to insert Holiday Song between Nimrod's Son and Vamos.... |

another killer show, I think. I don't agree that the false start was planned. I think kim and BF both realized how badly they'd biffed it.
I must say, I'M AMAZED at how many people try to sing along without knowing the words, and I'M AMAZED at how many people don't really respect the space of others ;-)
jeopardy theme kicked ass. I got some killer pics i'll post when we get hack to seattle tonight. |

A couple more thoughts about last night's show as my brain mass begins to reassemble...
A friend of ours has VIP passes for the Big Easy and was at the show last night. He came down after and reported that Dave Lovering was up there afterwards signing autographs. He bought the disclive and had him sign it.
If I could sum up the encore I would call it absolutely blistering. After the regular set that was up and down in tone musically and the last few songs connected by Frank's acoustic guitar slinging cluminating with the slow version of Wave; the heavy Wave, Crackity and Isla encore seemed designed to deliver a calculated 1-2-3 sonic aural punch.
Also note the connection between ACS and The Pixies -- producer Gil Norton.
It looks like last night's set was 29 songs...the longest show of the tour so far? |

Hey Shane, sorry about the crappy motel. But hey, you said "Motel6 style". ;-)
You really can find great food in Spokane, but you won't find it at the Heroes & Legends (but yeah, otherwise a pretty damn cool sports bar, huh?) or the restaurant attached to the Big Easy (Bourban Street). Although they're really trying to sell the Bourban Street as a viable seperate entity from the concert hall, I can't imagine anyone wanting to eat there other than to get an early pass into a show. It does the job is the best I can say about it. But hey, we weren't there for the food after all, were we?
Sorry I didn't see you around. We were in the restaurant too...the group at the couches in the corner in the backside of the restaurant (across from where you enter into the hall). It sounds like we were very close to each other during the show. I was right about in front of Dave L. (between Frank and Kim) along the barrier with glasses and wearing a blue mechanics jacket. My buddy was to my right wearing a bright red western style shirt. I was mostly just headbanging along and singing since those were about the only parts of my body free to move in the crush.
Besides the sock, I noticed that someone threw a tan colored hat of some sort right near the beginning and it just laid on the stage to the immediate right of Kim for the whole show. Also, as I looked down over the barrier by the end of the set there was another sock and also someone's shoe(!). Some poor bastard must have been walking around after with only one shoe!
Anyway, it sounds like you had a good time. Glad to hear it. Hopefully we'll hear some more stories as everyone else filters home. |

Wow. That's kind of funny. You were howling/screaming directly at my head for about six songs (I was in front of you, in the blue Autobots shirt, next to the guy who looked pissed and didn't sing at all), and I was almost amused at how many songs you didn't seem to know. Thanks for getting sucked in to the crowd and saving me from having to ask you to pipe down :) |

I don't think the walking off the stage after the Subbacultcha screw-up was planned. The reason they seemed so prepared to do so was because they had just done the same thing in Vancouver two nights before during La La Love You.
I must have been in the wrong part of the crowd -- everyone seemed to be from the area, and people were not nearly as into the show as the previous night in Vancouver. I mean, in Vancouver people were so ready they cheered loudly when the roadie took the tarp off Dave's drum set. In Spokane I'm not sure if anyone noticed (although I'm sure there was cheering somewhere else that I didn't hear).
I've read most of the reviews above, although not the really long one -- was anyone else near the vomiting incident during the encore? |

Also, I thought at the time that the Jeopardy theme in Vamos was a reference to the previous night where Joey did Jeopardy a la carte while Frank was changing guitars, but it's cool to hear that was a leftover from way back when. |

i just got back in a little bit ago. i'm sooo fucking tired.
i'll give a proper "review" later.. but, bottom line, we had a fucking great time. it was worth every penny we spent. i'm so glad we got to see them in a small venue before Coachella (which i'm even considering forgoing in light of the 80,000 people thing . and in light of the good possibility that that Pomona show on Friday will be a secret Pixies show)..
but yeah, Spokane is beautiful. and our hotel, the Davenport, is one of the nicest hotels i've ever stayed in. a perfect weekend getaway..
roomloo, i was very near the vomiting incident. i actually shook that guys hand after the show to congratulate him on creating such a spectacle (and then quickly washed my hands). it was pretty top notch if i don't say so. |

My favorite part of the vomiting thing -- aside from the guy managing to stick it out afterward -- was how that one other dude took advantage of the situation to stand all alone in the middle of the vomit for the last song or two. Obviously, not many people were willing to invade that space -- it was pretty funny, especially with all the smiling fans turning around and giving the "thumbs up."
Just glad it was during the encore. I was close enough to smell it. |

i remember turning around and giving a thumbs up actually. maybe that was me you saw.
so were did everyone hang out afterwards? it would have been cool to meet some of you, but i don't know what anyone looks like so there you go.
we went to some lame sports bar after, and then ended up at a place up the street that was pretty cool. (the satellite?).. they were playing pixies tunes.
we met a kid who was also from LA, Chris (nice to meet you if you read this), who had taken the train all the way up from LA. 36 hours. and was leaving to go back down at 2am the same night. now that's respectable.
hung out with him afterwards at the Satellite or whatever it was called. and then stumbled back to the Davenport. i had way more alcohol than i needed to. and with Chris buying that last round, i was (and still am) pretty done for. |

I saw the one dude with the goatee at the end trying to climb his way up front. Don't know what his problem was. Then his girl picked a fight with my friend (in the green t-shirt) and came within inches of an ass-kicking by my friend's girl who was to my right. Good times.

ahh yes black AFI hat. you are that douche bag that shoved your way up front before the pixies set. talking about how this was your third show, when no one even gave a shit. youre talking about punching people that were trying to take your spot? what the fuck. you dont know this, but you were so close to getting the shit kicked out of you by that guy you pissed off in the white shirt. i had to tell him to get out of there because he was 2 seconds from knocking your teeth out. and just because the people to your right werent spazzing out with limbs flailing and singing, or pretending to sing, lyrics to every song in no way means that they are not fans. do us all a favor and never come to america again.

My friends and I drove up from Tri-Cities, WA, which is about 2 hours south of Spokane. My carload got into Spokane before 3 and we grabbed a table in the Big Easy restuarant, but my good friend Steve got there at 11:30 and was apparently the only person there for an hour or two and chummed it up with the staff and got a tour of the whole place. After an hour or two of standing around waiting, we were ushered in with our C and D restaurant passes (we SHOULD'VE had earlier letters, but the waiters neglected us and the guy with the passes skipped us over at first because we "hadn't ordered yet"..... ) and half of us made a beeline for a prime spot up front while the other half went to the merch and disclive tables. We ended up standing about directly in front of Joey S, maybe a bit more center. We were right in front, and for the most part held our ground the whole show.
Not an ACS fan, they had played in our town last year. During their set and the first few songs of the Pixies, a woman from the Spokesman Review took a bunch of pictures of our group. I posted a link in the spokane pictures thread (check it out!).
It was a phenominal experience...I won't go through all the details of the Pixies set, it'd be redundant to go over the details....I didn't have ANY complaints to make...I'm just stunned that I watched the Pixies last night....!
Oh, I did get a great piece of memorabilia! The cigarette butt of Joey's that he had in the strings on the head of his guitar. It's now in mine for luck. I've gotta say, it's already sounding better |

The film crew wasn't there. Hmm...
We made a foray into the balcony during the show and the video screens were on up there.
It was another great show!! They did run through the set quickly, rather like they did in Victoria. Although the crowd wasn't as rough from what I could tell from the the side of the stage, Kim's side. I LOVED the encore! I'd been a little disappointed with the encores of the two previous shows I'd seen (Victoria, Thursday Vancouver), just because they were on the slow side. I like encores to be fast and furious, and the Pixies made themselves the reigning champions of that last night!! As someone said before, the set started slow. But it did build to this blazing encore. It blew my head off!! It was an awesome ending!!!
We did an informal poll of the people around us before the Pixies started, and surprisingly, most of them were from Missoula, Montana. However, we saw many people from Seattle we knew that we'd not known were going, so there was a very strong Seattle turn out. Of course.
Me, my husband, our friend, vespa59 and his girlfriend all ended up at the Satellite too. Too bad we missed you floop. Everyone cheered when the first Pixies song was played on the juke box.
The crowd at the show was definitely in a party mood. Afterwards, there was lots of, "Where's the party?" People were roaming downtown Spokane until the wee hours. At about 2:30 am my husband went back to the Satellite, which was just across the street from our hotel, to get some take out as the vending machines at the hotel weren't working--we'd suddenly realized that we were starving...too much alcohol. He said there was a very, very, very drunk crowd still there, including ACS. The waitress said to him, almost apologetically, "We aren't usually this crowded this late. But there was this concert tonight. The Pixies. I guess they're popular." lol
There seemed to be a lot of people at our hotel there for the Pixies. When checking in the reception person knew we'd be going to The Big Easy and gave us directions there without us asking. There were snippets of Caribou being sung in the elevator after the show. It was like downtown got taken over by Pixies fans for the night. Very fun! One big Pixies party!
I saw the press guy taking the photos with the little digital camera. We were wondering why on earth he was using that camera :-P Thanks for the full story.
BTW, my husband was the one passing out the FB materials as the line started to go in. He said he met someone from the forum then, but couldn't remember their forum name. Anyone? He once again got mistaken for Dave Noisy ;-) Dave, all the materials you gave us were gone in about 20 seconds! They were a big hit.
I also have a few photos to share--first night I've had the nerve to try to get a camera in. I'll post them in the gallery when I get a chance to upload.

I thought the show was awesome. I don't think the re-start on the first song was planned at all. On the DiscLive CD you and hear Frank singing the wrong part of the verse right before Kim stops the song. You can also hear him say, "this is the second..." and then stop, most likely exclaiming that it was the second time during the tour that they had to stop mid-song. Also, you guys mention that they went through the set really fast, which is mostly due to the fact that shows at the Big Easy have to end pretty early so that they can get people in for the dance club. On the recording you can hear Kim say that they need to be quick when going off stage for a moment because of the dance club that night. Anyway, I was right in front of Frank the entire show (give or a take a push to the left or right here or there) and about three or four people back of the rail. I don't go to very many crowded show environments like this one, so I wasn't used to it, but I managed. I didn't see the vomiting incident, or even the aftermath, but my sister told me afterward that she saw it. Before and during the show I couldn't quite comprehend that I was seeing the Pixies, since less than a year ago it seemed like a complete and total impossibility; I still can barely believe it. I can't really think of anything too specific to review about the show, other than the fact that unlike most people I personally thought that the first couple of songs were perfect for starting out the set, and that I wasn't really a big fan of the encore because it primarily consisted of songs that I'm not that fond of. Another side note, I used to live in Helena, MT and after the show a guy came up to me (most likely one of the guys from Missoula that Astrocat spoke with) who I used to go middle school with! I hadn't seen him since '97, so that was weird. I would have loved to have gone out and partied after the show, but I work graveyard and had to work that night at 11pm. In fact, I'm typing this at work right now, and my break is over, so I have to go. Later. |

Oh man... I forgot to write about the shittiest part!
So... there's this one roadie who seems to HATE me. He's the hippie looking dude with the shaggy beard who's always wearing the same pants. Anyway, I'd been asking him for a set list every night, and every night he'd shut me down. Well, at the end of Spokane, while everyone's yelling "HEY! ROADIE!" at him, like he's their butler, I just gave him a pleading look and pointed at the list. To my surprise, he grabbed it off the stage and tried to hand it directly to me.
Of course, a bunch of fucking idiots all grabbed at it at the same time and it was literally torn to shreds. I lamented about what nimrods everyone was and how NOBODY would have the list now. This dude in front of me, who was now holding about six inches of black tape with a blank part of the list attached to it goes, "Well... at least I got SOME of it!" Dipshit.
So that's my sad set list story. I did get one from Thursday night in Vancouver (strangely enough, it was still at the light guy's station on Friday).
Steve
PS: Amazed, at least two of my friends were contemplating beating you down as well. You're not as fun to stand near as you think. Also, "douche bag" is a pretty hilarious cut here in hick-land. Take the time to learn about our country's culture next time you visit! |

great, great show. hightlights for me: Velouria, In Heaven, Caribou. lowlights: crowd surfers. i mean, seriously. who fu#ing crowd surfs these days? and at a Pixies concert no less! the other dissapointing thing was the sound. Frank's mic was about half the volume as Kim's. The disclive evidences this. bass was too much....could hardly hear Lovering.
crowd surfing and poor sound aside, the show was exceptional. they all seemed to be enjoying themselves and looked liked they appreciated the crowd. great setlist too! thx, pixies.

seriously, why don't you guys drop it. maybe it would be more cool to talk about this bitchin' show, than how you were "almost" going to beat someone up? |

Those people can also be ignored.
Anyway, I'm in the same boat as floop as far as fending off the youngsters goes ... although it was a little crazier the night before in Vancouver (which is maybe slightly odd since the percentage of under-21 up near the stage in Spokane seemed a little higher). And I also enjoyed it -- I'm not one to complain, although the crowd surfing made me feel a little too much like I was in a Pearl Jam video.
While some of you were on the topic of hotels ... I stayed in this place out on Sunset Highway called the Cedar Village motel ... any of you from the area can probably get a good laugh out of it, because that motel rocked in a very retro-backwoods sort of way. It even had "magic fingers" machines in the beds from way back in the 70's or 80's. Throw in a quarter and your bed "vibrates." That pretty much sums up that place. |

yeah, the Davenport Hotel was awesome. the most comfortable beds i've ever slept in. and this really bitchin' walk-in shower.
they had this breakfast buffet that rivaled the Bellagio's in Vegas. and that's saying something.
thanks again for all the recommendations Aerodynamics and general Ambassador of Spokane-ness. we ended up eating at this burger place by the mall that was excellent (Sawtooth grill?).. hit the spot.
i don't know what Amazed is talking about. it seems like complaining about fast food is oxymoronic; "the fast food is just not as good here" ???

Haha, Dave, that's funny! Were the beds also heart-shaped? And moreover, did you put in a quarter? :)

My friends stopped off at the Onion for food after the show. Definitely not the place to find Pixies fans. Wish we had known about Satellite, but we were also pretty beat after driving down from Vancouver. |
