Dean, I'm going to post a picture of the Magic Fingers thing once I get a chance. It was pretty classic. I did put a quarter in mine (!) but unfortunately it didn't work -- the one on my friends' bed did, though. It felt kind of like driving your car over the rumble strip off the side of the highway.

I guess I never stopped at a McDonald's in Winnipeg or Vancouver ... can't believe the food could really be that different, though. Any fast food place is going to be hit or miss though. If the Big Mac you ordered just happened to be under the heat lamp for more than 20 minutes, of course it's going to suck -- even in Canada.

yeah, Spokane is a cool town. there were some bad seeds drifing about on the street (but where don't you get that in a downtown area?).. but the city (the red brick buildings, pine trees, the river etc..) is very beautiful and charming. despite being eerily close to the Canadian border.

i want to know why it was so vacated though? we were walking around in the afternoon. downtown. and there was no one around. it was very twilight zone-esque.

and i needed to find a pharmacy type place and there was nothing open. rite aid closed at 6. i asked this girl where i could find a market or pharmacy and whe was like, "that's about all there is for downtown"..

well that answers it.

again, i find it ironic that you're talking about food "quality" when you're eating at fast food restaurants.

i am surprised there is not more chatter about the actual show in this thread. its more about where people stayed and what mcdonalds they went to. i like how they played both versions of Wave back to back. kim's In Heaven gave me chills

Was there a post by Amazed that was deleted? I think I read a post yesterday full of hate for American fast food.

you're right George.

i was so swept away with the excitement (and drunkenness) that i don't remember many of the small details. i do think the set felt a bit rushed though.

having had mixed feelings about this whole thing since i first heard about it.. having seen it now, i feel ok with it. i don't think they've done anything to be embarassed or ashamed about. Frank is giving everyone their moneys worth, and clearly trying really hard to do so. when he could easily just be "phoning it in" and people would still pay to see them.

i think in some ways they sound tighter than i remember (i saw them 3 times back in the day).. but then, i kind of liked those older shows for the lack of polish..

i think it would be cool if Frank did a solo show of Pixies songs.. then the cycle would be complete. becasue for me, there is still no better show then when i saw him solo back in 91. nothing will ever top that.

Agreed, Floop, quite ironic, but it is in fact true that the standards here are higher than the US. Of course, if you look at something like beef, our standards (which, again, are higher than US standards and now even moreso with the BSE found in that one cow) are lower than several European countries. That said, this has little to do with what you would taste as a difference in McDonald's. I believe the difference you're probably tasting is in the oils used.

Now, enough on McD's & Amazed being gang-raped/spaztic, let's discuss the show shall we?

there were a lot of posts by Amazed that were deleted. but it's probably good because we don't want this to become a US vs. Canada thread.

we already have a Spokane vs. Saskatoon thread.

We hung out at the Satellite after the show. There were a bunch of Pixies people in there (Pixiesheads?). The food was ok, but watching the guy is a super-focused cooking frenzy was actually kind of fun.

Yeah... If anything, I felt a lot safer in Spokane after the show than in Vancouver, where two different hotel lobby clerks basically told me that if I parked on the street or in a public lot past 9pm, it was almost a given that my car would get broken in to. Nice.

As for the food... isn't the whole point of places like McDonald's that the food tastes exactly the same wherever you go?

I’ve been offline for a while and am just now getting the chance to post again. I was following along for a bit, but it appears that a number of posts here have been deleted. I’m just glad I missed out on all of the drama that must have been taking place behind me. P+2 and I’ve still got bruised ribs and elbows and sore calves from my position wedged up against the barrier, but I much prefer that position to the pushing and shoving taking place farther back. Not too mention the vomiting incident that I didn’t know about until I walked past it after the show. (Blech!)

Hey Floop, glad you got to stay at the Davenport. It is rather a historic building in Spokane. The hotel opened in the early 20th Century, went into disrepair in the 60s and 70s and was finally closed down. A local developer bought the building a few years ago and put millions into a thorough restoration process that resulted in what you saw. My second favorite hotel in the city (yes, I know that sounds weird, but even though I live in Spokane I still have occasion to stay in hotels once in a while) – the first being a small boutique job across the street. And I agree – their beds are out of this world! Glad you found some decent food as well. The Sawtooth Grill is not high cuisine or anything, but they’re my favorite burgers in town (and the rest of the menu is very good as well).

That was a funny story about the vibrating beds. All of the motels out in the Sunset Highway area are like that. Way back when, that was along the main road between downtown Spokane and the airport. You can still get to the airport that way, but now it’s considered a back road. Anyway, all of the old motels still remain out there as a sort of time capsule of how things used to be. They must still do some bit of business to remain open, but it’s like time stood still on the Sunset Hill. I can’t remember which motel it was out there now, but there was this one place that had a separate room with a sunken hot tub in it that some friends of mine used to rent out and party in. The last time I was out there was 1987 though.

So did you guys who wandered down to the Satellite end up in the bar or the diner? The bar is a decent place to hang out. I forgot to mention that one in my pre-concert recommendations. Our group actually walked down to the Diner with the intention of having some late night breakfast, but the place was packed. It was very cool walking around downtown though and running into Pixies fans all over the place. We finally ended up driving over a bit to another 24-hour local eating establishment (Frankie Doodles) where we encountered even more post-Pixies concertgoers. They were everywhere!

Not sure why downtown Spokane seemed so deserted on Saturday afternoon. It was a nice day too. Did anyone happen to run into Gorilla & Rabbit? If you want to witness a real contrast, you would have to be here this coming weekend. That’s when the annual Bloomsday running event takes place (a 7+ mile run that begins and ends in downtown). From it’s humble beginnings with ~1,000 people in 1977, it has grown into a massive event that annually hosts 50,000-60,000 participants. Crazy stuff.

Yeah, my posts look pretty weird now without the context of Amazed's. He should have kept the question of how I thought Spokane compared to the other shows ... not sure how that one was controversial.

I think it's interesting it was not on the original setlist from the show. I like to know what they throw in on the fly.

I thought it was also interesting that they did the two Wave versions back to back. I wouldn't want to see it done that way every night, but cool they did it once.

I was very glad they did Is She Weird! I hadn't seen them do it yet on the tour. I'm afraid my excitement over it was a little dampened though because I was frustrated at that point. We had left from what had been a great spot, at least for me, and roamed around the club a bit looking for a better spot. Of course there were none. I'd just gotten back to the original good spot when they played Is She Weird and was still fuming that three songs had gone by while we roamed and I couldn't see a thing. Errrrrr!

The Big Easy was much smaller than I thought it'd be. The way it is set up made it feel more like a club than a mid-sized venue. But I wish they'd get rid of that cheesy stage backdrop!

The pushing at the front takes me back too. I intentionally stayed in it at Victoria because I wanted to experience that once on the tour. It was fun, but I don't think I'll do it for another show (I've still got two to go). I'm sure that contributes to my idea that the Victoria crowd was a little rough. From what I keep reading, maybe all of them are pretty rough.

A big part of the experience of the Spokane show was for me that it felt like there were so many Pixies fans about town before and after. That's how, in part, this show distinguished itself from the others I've been too--which took place in bigger cities than Spokane, with probably more of a home town crowd so there wasn't a cohesive feeling out on the street that everyone was there for one reason. I thought that was great, and probably why some of us keep talking about what hotel or restaurant we were at.

We hung out mostly in the bar at the Satellite, but we got food later at the diner. It's a pretty cool place. But after about midnight it seemed the bar turned into mostly regulars or people just looking to pick up other people. The music got pretty bad then too.

I was at the Ridpath Hotel and it was a great place to stay. Besides the nice, comfortable rooms, the staff were all very freindly and upbeat, which I didn't expect from such a place. We stayed on the 11th floor and had a terrific view too. I'd never been to Spokane, but my husband lived there briefly as a kid and our friend we went to the show with grew up there. They are constantly putting the place down, so I expected the worst, but I thought it was a nice place and pretty too. It is a small city and there's limitations in that--such as, almost no one actually lives downtown and, therefore, there's no 24 hour pharmacy. However, I was surprised there was so much night life. As far as small cities go, I thought it was a great place, at least to visit.

floop, we went to Riverside Park during the day and there were plenty of people there.

I was able to stand right in front of Joey and to the left of frankie. i met some cool people from utah and tri-cities. the only problem was the sadistic f#ckers who were jamming people into the rail and dry humping the girls. but all negativity aside this show was so amazing to me. i got a setlist and got it autographed by lovering. i also got to see him do a card trick after the show and b'sd with him a bit after the show. for all that i heard about the big easy it was a cool place. i look forward to seeing them at bumpershoot.

It was a cool show, definitley the best I've seen. I was up on the barricade opposite of kim which was very cool. My only complaints are of the people behind me, people screaming in the middle of songs and pretending to sing along the entire show directly in my ear, I paid to hear the Pixies sing, not some chode behind me. Then there were some really stupid girls behind who kept violently flailing there arms-giving me a nosebleed, dancing like they were riding a horse, trying to tickle me and pulling my hair, afterwards one was trying to whore herself to crowd control to try to get backstage. One idiot wearing an AFI hat wouldn't shut up and kept pushing people out of his way to try to get closer, I was one of many who was on the verge of killing him, I yelled at him to shut up but that just seemed to make him scream/try to sing louder. Oh, and some people tried to grab my setlist away from me after the show and ended up tearing it into a number of pieces, only one of which I have now. I dunno, I was expecting more from Pixes fans, instead I get a bunch of inbreds flashing the sign of the cuckold, screaming into my ear at a volume and proximity that made it difficult to hear the band, stupidest crowd I have ever been in. What is wrong with these morons....
Sorry had to vent, but if I run into AFI boy again he will be destroyed.

We were right in front of Santiago, it seems most people posting on here were on the other side. people mentioned Kims vocals being way louder...it seems whoever you were in front of was the loudest. we clearly heard joey rockin away, could hear frank pretty good, but alot of the times kims voice was very faint. doesnt sound that way on the disclive though.

no one has mentioned this but--
I almost cried when the four of them, after playing Wave of mutilation came and stood on the edge of the stage smiling and waving to everyone. it was beautiful! they completely basked in and ate up the adoration, while at the same time looked amazed and completely humble and thankfull. I thought it was completely noble and it is the image that stuck in my mind the most throughout the set. Did anyone happen to get a picture of that??

we also ended up at the satellite on the not-bar side, kinda crowded into a string of tiny tables in the middle of the place.

man that was a fucking beautiful night.

bop.

hate is the new love.

just kidding. yeah, it's pretty lame how there's so much negativity from people at this show. i'm surprised because i got a good vibe from everyone while i was there. very friendly.. no assholes.

sure, pushing and shoving. but what do you expect at a show if you're in the front?

i think after reading this thread, if i ever see someone with a black AFI hat on backwards, i'll probably have uncontrollable feelings of hatred and resentment, and not consciously know why.

then again, i might have those feelings for someone wearing an AFI hat backwards regardless.

that was the best show i've ever been to!!!!
mel gibson should start filming the passion2 . the pixies. the 2nd coming
i'm still flying high.
i liked it when i could just see fingers goin up in the important counting verse in monkey gone to heaven.
i liked that i said, "what's that smell?" as i was exiting the firetrap, instead of while i was in heaven.
(it was the puke, the young man probably was mixin his canadian junk food with his american fast food. kids today)
i never wanted the night to end, only 29 songs.
their pre-encore farewell was so warm and genuine, frank had a calming wave for someone who was just screaming up astorm.
why did i spend some of my rent money on a sweatshirt?
club fusion is my new running joke.
i am so thankful for disclive too.
THANKYOU PIXIES!!
and all the fb.net people that i didn't have time to meet.

just keepin it real, like kim deal

"Club Fusion."

That reminds me ... my friends and I got a kick out of the dress code posted on the front door. "No jogging suits / no plain t-shirts" etc. Damn, there's got to be worse things you can do at dance night than wear a jogging suit (not that anyone really would, right?) I wish I could remember the other rules. Pretty good stuff.
