I have just come back from seeing the Pixies in Victoria, BC.
I was really excited about seeing them, as I've been a fan for so long...
but I was a bit disappointed.

I read that they reunited simply 'for the cash', and it certainly showed.
There was no chemistry between them, what-so-ever. Joey looked bored and
unimpressed. Kim goofed her lines a few times. Frank...he was good, but he
seemed like he didn't want to be there, and frankly, they really raced through their set.

AND....the songlist was TOO SHORT, I felt slightly ripped-off!!
Please remember, I am big Pixies fan, and I WISH I could post that their performance
blew me away, but it didn't. It was just OKAY....

P.S. Their encore was a letdown as well...they turned the glaring lights on, and when Kim began to sing, they were turned back down, but Frank motioned to turn them back on, because they were obviously not going to stay long. And they didn't, they only played two songs.

E. :(

Heya biz000art - sorry to hear it wasn't such a fantastic experience for you..

Thanks Amazed! I thought it was a pretty great show overall.

I arrived at the Curling Club with my buddy Brandon (who's never listened to them before! He's pretty conservative musically, but he's an awesome guy and my best pal.)

First thing we did was get back around back to the Disclive trailer, and met up with Jake, who's a totally awesome guy. We checked out the rig, and it's crazy. I'll document it more soon, but basically there's a massive server, and 26 computers and 26 'robots' that feed 6 CD burners (each). Pretty amazing ordeal!

They get a line from the mixer, and then they do their magic and pop in on CD's - pretty cool.

After that, we walked in, to where they were finished setting up the stage, and i wandered around and took pics of all the gear - soon you can see Joey's pedals up-close. =)

No one bothered us as we looked at the gear, and took pics. We then wandered to the front of the building, and talked to some of the people there, and i made sure my friends were on the guestlist.

Brandon and i then went back into the main hall and...well...waited. We ended up playing hackey-sack in the middle of this huge curling hall...it was hilarious! None of the security doods wanted to join us.. After about 20mins, the doors open and people started pouring in. We quickly moved to front and center, where we stayed for most of the night.

Leeroy Stagger came on, and they played a decent set..sort of alt-country. He was clearly happy and excited to be playing in front of so many people. He cracked his acoustic guitar tho.. =(

After a short while, the Pixies stormed the stage and the crowd went wild. The songs are a bit of a blur now (esp. after hearing all the Disclive stuff), so i cannot provide a setlist. (Didn't nab a CD either.. I try not to collect 'stuff'..heh..)

Everyone was quite into it, and i think most had a great time.

I'd have to admit that she's right about the band tho.. Joey really did look pretty bored over all.. Frank was Frank, he played hard but as usual he didn't say a word. There wasn't any bantering at all. He wasn't wearing his New Balance either. ;)

There were a few times he came to the front of the stage, and just looked out at people while playing. I think he was wearing eyeliner too..heh.. During 'In Heaven' he sad down on his amps..

Kim smiled and laughed a number of times, but none of the band really had much to say, to each other or the crowd. All i really remember was Kim saying 'I don't think i've every played Victoria'. David seemed to enjoy drumming tho, and he was solid. I noticed he took a few pictures of the audience..pretty neat.

After their set, they stood and soaked up the applause. They seemed to be at their happiest then. They played one encore, and it was with the lights on...that was really weird.

This was the first time i've been to a show with so many people - it was weird getting crushed at the front! I'm physically exhaused!! A number of people were extracted for crowd-surfing..most seemed to come right over my head, and i got booted a few times!

Met a few Forum folks as well - Vespa, Beergeek, Astrocat and her friend....? If you hook up with them in Van, i gave ______(?) a pile of stickers and FB pics to give out to any other fans, so try and track them down. They all seem like really nice people, except when i went to where they were meeting up afterwards, there was nothing but an empty diner..so unfortunately i never got to spend any more time with them. (I'm not gonna make it to Vancouver sadly...my hernia couldn't take much more squishing!!)

Anyway, 'nuff from me! Glad i got to see them play! I'm ready for more FB stuff tho!

I was there too. I got there late to see the second half of the opening band. From what I saw they were good but their songs seemed excessively long, being maybe 5-6 mins each--maybe not the best strategy given the audience's high anticipation for the following act....

The Pixies came on and people were pumped. The blazed through a songlist, but they had no breaks in between. I know Pixies songs are short but they really flew through them all. No improvisations or extended versions for any of the songs. The songs were exactly the same as the original recordings.

Frank said nothing to the audience through the entire set--he could have been in any city it seemed--but Kim spoke a bit. She thanked the audience a couple times and mentioned never being in Victoria before. And all of a sudden it was over. The encore was ...well..... disappointing. They played Wave of Mutilation again but another slower version of it. They also played a slow song I had not heard before but a friend said was a cover from the Eraserhead movie. The lights were on when the encore set started, then off halfway through it. The crowd seems to have died after the first encore and there was no second one. I blame the crowd for being only one encore. Then again, the first encore left little to go crazy about.

Performance-wise, Frank was great on vocals and guitar. To my ears and eyes, Dave was probably the most solid player, followed by Frank then Kim. Joey had great tone--more distorted than I expected. Joey also made the most mistakes but he also was mixed the loudest.

The band was tight overall but there definitely was some rust there. I have to agree with Biz00art…the chemistry between the musicians was not there. Very little interaction between the 4 throughout the set. I feel like I paid to sit in on a rushed jam practice.

Overall, I have to say that seeing the Pixies live after all there years was awesome. It was worth the money for that alone. That said, I expected more energy and a bit more enthusiasm from the band. The song renditions—and I hate to say this—seemed uninspired. By the end of the show I was hoping to hear something new, as the versions of the old songs were not very satisfying. They could have at least tried to improvise or extend them from the recorded versions.

I also got to see the interior of the bus earlier today too. They were staying at the Harbour Towers Hotel, which is close to where I work. I noticed the bus there on the 20th and wondered if it was them. I found out today that it actually was the Pixies bus when I spoke to the tour bus driver today on my way to work. I also got to meet Dave as he was heading to the sound check.

I'm sorry to hear that guys.I'm going to the Van show tommorow, and that's a little dissapointing to hear.Think about the upside though, we were lucky and got to see them.I'm sure there are lots of fans that won't get to see them. And that sucks to be them.Could you imagine if they couldn't even finish the tour? I don't even want to say that.Knock on wood.I wonder if the shows are getting better, or worse.

Though I am not attending either Van shows I ordered the second night from DiscLive. Banking on the whole secong nihgt is always the better night thing. We'll see. I am interested in the setlist to this show to see what they will hopefulley not play the next night. Really now, would they take the same stage one night later and play the same songs? I hope you're all having fun seeing them. Let's go East Coast!

I'm finding it hard to believe it was this bad...
I mean, Frank has never been much of an interaction-with-the-band type guy, and they've never been ones to jump all over the stage like Garth Brooks showing how excited they are.

Lets back up for a minute.

On the plus side, I thought they were extremely tight. And the first half of the setlist was absolutely blistering. Also, the crowd up front was crazy into it, lots of moshing and surfing.

On the minus side, no banter, and the setlist (which had nothing new in it) also had *ZERO* songs from bossanova and trompe, if I recall correctly.

good morning people,

that's almost blasphemy, CoF. a pixies show can never be bad :)

my memories of the setlist:

debaser (opener)
cactus
hey
gigantic
where is my mind
into the white
in heaven
river
gouge away
bone machine
vamous
isle de encarta
nimrod's son
crackity jones
oh la love you
here comes your man
monkey's gone to heaven
broken face
wave of mutilation (x2) - slow version for an enchore
tame

and some other stuff that i probably can't remember....

it was a pretty fucking amazing experience. the crowd was unbelievable. there was so much energy, and so much cheering and sining. the reaction of people around me to the opening notes of debaser was something that i will never forget. the curling club was quite an appropriate venue for the gig. there were sound issues, but i am not sure whether it was where i was standing, or whether it was just too loud or whether the venue is just not a concert hall or whatfucking ever. it was great. i am bruised all over. and my voice and hearing are gone.

they did hey! they did cactus! they did river euphrates! needless to say this little monkey was surely in heaven.

it's very hard for a much hyped up show to meet expectations. but for me this one did. they played a fucking amazing tight set. they did not banter with the crowd, sure. i didn't think they looked bored. not at all. and joey did rock out during vamous. kim was smoking what appeared to be a joint throughout. yes, from where i was, frank appeared to be wearing eyeliner.

the encore was weird. apparently frank wanted the lights on. he wanted to see the crowd. but i heard no official confirmation of this. musicians, what are you going to do?

again, this was a great experice. i envy all of you going to van tonight and tomorrow night and wish i can be there with you.

one bad thing - leory stagger was a piece of shit band. what a goddamn boring opener. i am sorry if any memebers of the band are also members of this forum, but dude. spend more time on the music and less time on the hair. there's a world outside pop.

I should note that all of them have been wearing eyeliner to give their faces some definition when they go into the white (lights), and probably a hint of other makeup too (though I can't confirm this).

The interactions of the band with the crowd don't sound any different than the rest of the tour. It's unfortunate that some were dissappointed, but if your expecting Frank to do cartwheels, Dave to pull a rabbit out of Joey's ass and Kim to ask for your phone number, then maybe your missing the point. YOU SAW THE FUCKIN' PIXIES. Just soak it in and enjoy.

I guess the house lights being on in the encore might have calmed the audience down too much LOL?

Knowing that the band are playing tightly is a great sign. And I'm not too worried about the songs sounding 'like on the records' either. Pixies are damn skilled.

Hi. This is my first post. I've been lurking while and enjoyed the forum, but never had anything to say - 'till now.

What an awesome show! Great set. Maybe 2 songs too short? Don't know, but I loved it.
Lots of energy in the music. Tons on the floor. The crowd was moshing and singing the whole time. Those around me were generally respectful of flailing elbows in the 'pit'. People who fell down were immediately helped up by those around them. Nice work.

Throughout the show Frank and Kim were looking into the crowd to see (either putting their hands above their eyes or squinting), so the house lights coming on at the end was kinda cool since it gave them the chance to see everyone. I guess that was the plan? Did they do this before Victoria? I thought it was cool.

My plan was to see the Pixes and have a good time. I did - and more. I hope they had fun playing, but I understand that playing basically the same songs every night can seem routine, so I'll give them the right to feel whatever they want. Fun, bored, whatever. I don't think they dialed it in. Lots of smiles, grins and laughing tell me they had a good time. I've heard that Frank really likes Victoria, and I'm glad that even though we don't get a lot of good bands through here, we get a musical genious just about every spring. How lucky are we? Very. Thanks Pixies!

The CD of the concert is awesome. I got into line to pick up my CD and when I did - I left. No way to come back in??? Wait...my friends are still inside!! That was kinda funny. Coming home last night with my friends and listening to and reliving the show was awesome too. Thanks Pixies! Please come back soon!

By reading these disappointing reviews, I believe that maybe people that always pissed on Frank Black solo work will finally realize that the Pixies are not that more wonderful than Frank Black itself and maybe they'll stop complaining because the Pixies do not exist anymore and they'll start being interested in FB...I say that because I think everybody is looking for something so perfect from the Pixies...and we all know they've never been that entertaining on stage ! Anyway as everybody says I will enjoy saying them playing live, I just wish FB solo could be more estimated vs the Pixies...

ok, i'm a bit of a luddite when it comes to bulletin board technology. is there a way for me to upload and post an image or two here? i have a snapshot of last night's setlist.

in my opinion, it was quite a lovely show. just what i expected, with only slight dissapointment due lack of later material. and leeroy and the lads kicked much ass as well.

FWIW, my first post. I was at the curling club last night, and it was great. Most of the things people have posted here are true - the Pixies wailed through their setlist without hardly a moment to spare, there was no interaction between them (Frank talked to Joey for a bit during one of Kim's songs, and Dave tossed drumsticks to Joey for a bit of fooling around during an extended vamp on another, but that's literally it), and they didn't really talk to the crowd at all.

I have Kim saying, "Thanks" once, "Hey" once, and "I've never been in Victoria before, I think"; Frank said, "Hey" once.

Everyone in the band really looked like they enjoyed the adulation of the crowd, whether or not they actually acknowledged it. The lights coming on at the end of the set seems to be SOP for the band right now - check out the www.popmatters.com website for the review there of the Saskatoon show - same thing happened, I'm sure not a coincidence.

I have to say that the most impressive part of the show IMO, was Joey Santiago - amazing guitar fills...lots of sound, very fluid. The curling club isn't the greatest live venue in the world, but it was okay - lots of space, and yet you still were close to the band even at the back. All in all, a terrific show. No complaints here.

Also, the DiscLive disc - very good value. I had heard a couple of tunes from the Minneapolis show, and the mix on the Victoria CD is waay better. The show is spread out over 2 cd's: 13 songs on disc 1, 9 on disc 2.

I can't remember the order of the songs, but they played:

Debaser
Cactus
Bone Machine
River Euphrates
Crackity Jones
Something Against You

I was in the front row, so things were a little rough after that, so I didn't get the others written down.

Broken Face
Caribou
Gigantic
Gouge Away
Here Comes Your Man
Hey
In Heaven (encore sung by Kim)
Into the White (encore)
Isla De Encanta
La La Love You
Monkey Gone To Heaven
Mr. Grieves
Nimrod's Son
Tame
Vamos
Wave Of Mutilaton
Wave Of Mutilation UK Surf (encore)
Where Is My Mind

Maybe someone else will be able to provide the order, but that's what they played. I'll try to post a review later when I have a chance, but I don't think I'll have much negative to say.

i too was at first dismayed with the stage presence, but then i recalled that the Pixies were never a big show-boating band... kinda like Talking Heads... more like "do your job and get off" kind of attitude. Frank said five words to the crowd: "Thanks a lot. Good night." Kim made her comment about never playing Victoria and also thanked the crowd two or three times. and they did look bored occasionally, but it must be tough to go back to these songs they thought they'd left for dead a dozen years ago. but i agree with previous posts: they were very tight. and i was impressed with the sound quality, considering we were in a curling rink! i had a fantastic time.

I'd like to add that to those looking for extended or otherwise altered versions of songs than what is on the Pixies albums, remember they have had to re-learn these songs...it's not like they have been sitting around for the past 12 years trying to figure out some new thing they can add to "Debaser" or whatever. Let them get used to playing with each other again, playing the songs live again. They have just started the process!

BTW, favourite song last night? - Gouge Away. Amazing energy on that one (and more substantial than the album version). Dissapointed they didn't play U-Mass.

Cool pics.

All in all, it seems like a strange location for a concert. Did anyone call out "HURRY, HURRY HARD" between songs?

I had a friggin' great time! I saw the Pixies!!! I met cool people from here!!!

Noisy, sorry about the after show. Didn't know the bar was closed at Paul's. We ended up at the Mint drinking drinks called Pixies!

Here's the thing: Last time I saw the Pixies, they were burnt. Bad. There was lots of tension. I watched Black Francis spend too much time kissing Eric Drew Feldman(who, in my opinion, is still NOT a Pixie)'s ass. Kim had disappeared for two hours and they were all pissed at her. She was clearly baked.

This time, smiles on all the faces. Not a lot of vocal interaction, true, but if you were up front, and you made eye contact with any of them, you knew they were glad to see you.

Regarding the lights thing at the end. That was strictly the crowd's fault. You all know that Black Francis is freaked by the crowd. The crowd at the CC took it back to 1992 in every sense last night, which meant idiots crowd surfing, shoving at each other, trying to get to the stage, etc... The lights were on because he wanted them on, because he was pissed at what was going on up there. That's probably also the reason they rushed and why there was no second encore.

If people act like grownups tonight, have a good time, and quit trying to screw over the guy in front of you, or ride on his head, then maybe we'll get a better show.
