Thanks for posting those pics. Nice qyuality too!
I see from the photo for the set list that a second encore had a question mark beside it. So it was a possibility last night...... :( |

It's funny, I had a couple chances to see the Pixies live back in the early '90s and passed it up. Why? Because people I knew and trusted gave me reviews that made them sound exactly like this show. Naturally, every band has its ups and downs. But once the honeymoon is over on this go-round, will the shows be good or will most of them seem forced and boring? I hope not. Only time will tell. |

Bummer Vespa - i took a guess and zipped up the street to Soprano's, which was a rather scary venture....
Good review tho, thanks!

I have to say that some of the complaints sound like general pixies issues. Some people always complained that the Pixies just sort of "stood there" while playing, even back in the early days. Frank hardly ever addresses the crowd, and Kim usually does. Especially for this tour, she seems to point out to the crowd that they have never played their town before (except Minneapolis). Joey always has looked like he was glued to the stage, so that's nothing new. Now, Dave Lovering has never looked like Agnus Young, but that's a different story!
I loved the two shows I went to, and am jealous of anyone who has seen these later shows in the tour. I can't wait for them to come back to Minneapolis, and then I can't wait to see them in Chicago. WOO!

i remember seeing the pixies open for janes addiction and primus back in the day in portland. only 20 or so people were even standing up at all. most were just sitting around on the floor waiting for the REAL show they just played. no theatrics. just stood in place and rocked. it was the first time i had ever seen a band do this. i was confused and put off at first, then i just thought how cool it was, and kinda funny. i hope they do it this way again, cause it means that are just starting right where they left off. |

I finally got a few minutes, so I thought I'd throw in a few comments on the Victoria show.
Contrary to some of the negative comments, I found that the band's interaction was decent. Having watched a bunch of old videos, they seem to be there to play first and foremost. This show was no different, but Kim was constantly smiling at the rest of them. David seemed happy to be there. Joey was all-business, but one of the parts I really enjoyed was during Where Is My Mind when Black Francis tried to coax him into singing along on one of the "oo-oohs." Joey flatly refused and Black Francis laughed and kept persisting until Joey grudgingly sang along for those two notes.
The Vamos solo was decent. I was, of course, hoping for the Jeopardy theme, but both Black Francis and solo seemed to be talking to each other before the song and seemed to be tired. David threw Joey a drumstick, but he missed it and never did pick it up. Black Francis picked it up for him, but he shook his head. He played the guitar with his Perrier bottle and did a lot of stuff with his pedals (turning the dials on them with his hands while his guitar was behind his back). After the solo, he took a bow, but then gave in and played a while longer before bowing again. All around, it was a pretty damn respectable solo.
During La La Love You, Kim forgot her "I love you" the second time around and then panicked and blurted out something like "Oh! Love you!" and then laughed for a long time. I have to say that I absolutely loved her performance and it was great to see her sing In Heaven.
I agree that there were times that Black Francis didn't seem to thrilled. I remember a crowd surfer struggling against the security to touch Black Francis, and I remember some keys being thrown at the stage. After the first encore, the place sounded empty, so I can't blame them for not coming back out for a second encore.
They played every song I wanted them to from the earlier albums (my list included Hey, River Euphrates, Caribou, and La La Love You).
I'm sure I'll have a lot more to say later, but I wanted to throw in a few comments when I had the chance. By far the best concert I've ever been to. And hey, it's the Pixies, so saying anything negative would be like saying, "Yeah, the Cubs finally won the World Series, but I was really hoping for a four-game sweep."
Oh yeah, and I particularly enjoyed the last "repent" from Caribou. If that doesn't prove that he can scream like the old days, nothing will. |

I am wondering if the short show and the rushing through the setlist was because the show was being recorded for the live cd? They played for about 70 mins to my recollection --just right for a cd--with minimal talking. |

Oh, i forgot to mention two bra's were thrown on the stage as well..and a sweatshirt..the band looked at them kinda disgusted, Kim laughed.

I was at this show, and personally found it very good. Sure a few more songs would have been nice but whatever, they played super tight and had a decent set. I agree with Jefery, one of the major highlights in the night was when Frank was trying to get Joey to do a 'oo-ooooh' during where is my mind. The perrier bottle solo was also quite fantastic.
I have my own views on why they left early. Personally I think it is because they wanted to catch the last ferry off the island. The last boat left at midnight, which means leaving at 11pm would get them there right on time. Granted it could have also been due to the crowd surfters. I was a little disapointed with that myself. I think the funniest person I saw trying to surf, was some chick in a super low cut skirt and knee high boots...

Good theory about the ferry Vedder, but beergeek and his wife (?) reported they saw the bus on the road to the ferry terminal, and then at the terminal, for the 11:00 am ferry the next day. Unfortunately, they never saw them walking around the ferry.
I thought it was a GREAT show!!! I saw them a few times in "the old days" and my immediate thought after the show was, "Yep, that's the Pixies!" Joey always looks bored or in my opinion shy, Frank says nothing, Kim smiles and laughs, and Dave pounds away. They blaze through sets, with little or no talking. They just play and let the music make people crazy, instead of using theatrics to do it.
Unfortunately, (or fortunately, 'cause I was having fun), I was getting squeezed and pushed around so much that I wasn't able to devote my full attention to what was happening on stage. I missed a lot of details from what I read on here. But I mostly had a great time down front in the crush. I did think it was a rather aggressive crowd. I had a few people around me at various times through the show that were definitely not fun to be around. A fight broke out a few people back at one point and we had to get the security guard to do something about it. A very, very nice person made room for me to squeeze in at the barrier about 2/3 or 3/4 of the way through the show! Thank you again, whoever you are!
We met Dave Noisy. Dave, that was my husband, Jody, with me that you gave the promo stuff to. We hung out with vespa59, his friend, beergeek and his wife before and after the show, where we kept missing Dave. All super people! My husband met johnny_for_president too, as he was carrying around the promo items Dave gave him to pass out at Vancouver and johnny thought he was Dave, so they talked a bit. (I am so sorry Dave, but we left our room in Van in a rush and forgot the stuff...we'll get it out at the other shows we're going to).
I must admit the Victoria show is a blur for me. It was so intense crowd-wise, and I was so excited to be seeing them for the first time on the tour, and I still couldn't believe it was happening, right there in front of my eyes, that details didn't stick. I was blown away by them coming out and playing Debaser first!!!! That is one of my very favorite Pixies songs!! I purposefully stayed away from seeing the previous set lists, so I didn't know they had been playing it. I didn't think they would for some reason, so it was a big, BIG rush that they came out and played that FIRST!!
I also remember being particularly struck by Caribou. The thing with the lights was strange, but I didn't mind them on as long as they played. When they first turned them on, before they came out for the encore, a huge BOO went up from the crowd, because everyone thought that meant the show was over. Then huge screams when they did come back out.
Whenever the crush was getting to be a bit much and I'd wonder if I'd have to move to the back, I'd look up and see Kim, (she was the only one I could clearly see through most of the show), and think, "I'M FUCKING SEEING THE PIXIES!!!! THERE'S NO WAY I'M MOVING BACK!!!"
I must say though, after seeing them the next night in Vancouver, I do agree a little about the lack of chemistry. I thought nothing of it in Victoria, like I said, I thought that's just the Pixies. But in Vancouver they were so much more relaxed, chatting and smiling more with each other, looking more like they were having a good time. They were obviously in a very different mood. However, I never thought they were bored or not into it in Victoria.
I just gotta say too, that the ferry ride from Vancouver Island to the main land is incredibly beautiful! You guys are so lucky that get to do that often!
That's all I've got for now. I need to get some sleep for Spokane tomorrow! |

The show at the curling club was great. It was the first time I had ever seen them live. I picked up a CD after the gig and the recording is very very good. The crowd was pretty cool, being a mix of all types and ages. What made the night even more special was heading down to my previous place of employment after the show to have a pint of beer. I would go down there, talk to a few of servers, some who were die-hard pixies fans that could not make it to the show. Just to let them know how the show was and stuff. But anyways, I walk into the hotel lounge and who is sitting right there in front of me? Kim Deal and Joey Santiago. I shook Joey's and Kim's hand and thanked them for an awesome show. They smiled and thanked me back. I left them in peace, as not to be an ass and bother them. So I sat the bar and enjoyed my pint of beer. I let the bartender know who the people she was serving were. And how their music used to screech out of the kitchen every night I worked, which was turned off so many times by the Chef.
So I went home with a huge smile on my face, thinking of how I use to think I would never get to see the pixies live ever. Let alone meet a couple of them. And to Frank Black and David Lovering, thanks for the great show.

Oh yeah, and we managed to pick up a couple of souvenirs from the Victoria show. My sister got the Perrier bottle that Joey used to play Vamos (and another song...does anyone remember which of the encore songs he used the Perrier bottle on?) and I got a pick. I was wondering, though, if anyone could tell me whose pick it is. It's a Dunlop Tortex 60, which means very little to me. Does anyone know who this might have belonged to? |

If you got an orange pick, it's Frank's. Green is Joey.

It's an orange one. Thanks to both of you. It's an even better souvenir now that I can actually identify it. |

Kim's were green too... Joey maybe yellow?
I also got a Charles pick and the setlist from the sound guy.
This was an awesome show - don't let those ungrateful whiners who posted bad reviews far above taint your impression. What was most amazing was that I worked all day, saw The Pixies, and slept in my own bed that night, and was only slightly late for work the next day. Not likely to happen again in this town, and personally I am Grateful I was there!
DiscLive - highly recommended! |
