Okay, so the Coen Brothers are quite consistently brilliant filmmakers, and even if I don't necessarily get their films the first time, I'm always willing to watch it again because then I am certain I will find plenty more to enjoy the second time through. I would even watch Hudsucker Proxy again (though I haven't yet), even though I thought it was their weakest film I'd seen... at the time. Then Intolerable Cruelty came out last year, and I saw it in the theatre. It had to be one of the most tortuous theatre experiences I've ever been through. George Clooney brought nothing to the film, the story was dull, and Catherine Zeta Jones has got to be one of my least favorite actresses ever. The only film she works in is High Fidelity because that WAS her, as far as I can tell. I just don't dig her style. Too perfect, too glamorous. There were about 5 minutes of worthwhile moments in the film (mainly Billy Bob Thornton's part and the hitman guy), and nothing seemed distinctly Coen brothers. But I was able to figure them since the movie had been tossed all about between filmmakers and seemed rushed, plus it was the first entirely weak film they'd ever done, which after so many great movies, it's understandable that they'd be dry on ideas. I figured Ladykillers would be a return to classic Coen brothers, especially with the presence of Tom Hanks, who regardless of his box office draw and popularity, I fine to be a great actor, both dramatically and comedically. So I was anticipating the film, and then every review I've heard and opinion has been negative. It seems that nobody liked it. But I thought maybe someone who really understands the Coen Bros. around here had seen it and could give me a credible review.

I have seen every coen brothers movie and love their work with a passion. That being said, do not see the ladykillers. It is bad. Very bad. It had some good music in it, but it itself is bad. Its the type of movie that causes one to lose respect.

I love them, too. I liked Ladykillers, but not as much as Intolerable Cruelty. Which I didn't like as much as any of their other stuff. I'm gonna end up buying it to complete my collection of their work, but I won't watch it too often I'm sure. Go re-watch The Big Lebowski, Fargo, or Raising Arizona. They're all a lot better.

I'm a huge fan of the Coen brothers, Fargo is one of my all time favorites. Nobody on here mentions Miller's Crossing and Barton Fink. Don't forget these two films, they're genius. I'm sorry to read that Ladykillers is also poor. Oh well, I'm sure they'll do something good again, they bounced back in style after Hudsucker.

The Ladykillers remake has'nt been released over here yet. The original is great. I do like the Coen brothers, although I have to say Intolerable Cruelty-which I hav'nt seen-looks well dodgy, kinda like a Grant+Hepburn classic zany comedy gone awry. I got Miller's Crossing on DVD recently, had'nt seen it before but thought it was v.good. I have to say I never saw Blood Simple-I hope a decent edition of it comes out on DVD soon.

Barton Fink and O Brother are my two faves. Must watch Barton Fink again.

Eh, I'd wait for DVD. I saw the original Ladykillers as a child and think that it is the better version--must re-view it to be certain. The main problem that I have with the Coens lately is that, ever since Fargo, there just hasn't been a protagonist that I give a shit about. They always make clever, funny movies, but if you don't care about any of the characters, then it's just not as satisfying an experience.

To this day, my husband and I still refer to The Hudsucker Proxy as The Buttsucker Proxy. Man, that's baaad. I don't care if it's supposed to be an homage to Preston Sturges. I'd rather just watch a Preston Sturges movie.

i'm having this same debate. the Catherine Zeta Jones one looked horrible (and i heard it was horrible).. so i figured, ok. the Coen Brothers are allowed to make a commercial film if they want to.

but now this one looks bad too. i hope it's not.

If you go into Intolerable Cruelty expecting a screwball romance, then it is, in fact, tolerable. However, if you're looking for some full-on Coen Bros. experience, well, then, you'll be disappointed.

For the record, Irma P. Hall is great in The Ladykillers.

Yeah, Miller's Crossing and Barton Fink are awesome, too. Blood Simple was a good start, and I enjoyed The Hudsucker Proxy quite a bit also.

Intolerale Cruelty had that great snappy dialouge, and I thought Clooney and Zeta-Jones were a good pairing.
My favorite is definately Miller's Crossing. I quote that probably more then any other movie.

I watched Hudsucker Proxy again recently, and really enjoyed it this time round; Paul Newman is great in it. I haven't seen either of the last two Coen movies, I don't want to spoil this picture I have of them. Maybe the problem is that neither of these are original scripts...
