How many bands/records can you name from the last ten years that will genuinely stand the test of time and be respected in 20 or 30 years time. Clearly this is a slightly pointless topic, but there you go, I'm a slightly pointless person.

For the sake of objectivity, lets exclude all Pixies related bands.

I think Jeff Buckley just scrapes into the time frame, and I think OK Computer and The Bends will be there.

As for the White Stripes, the Strokes all the other 'The' bands that are trendy at the moment... they will all be consumed in the dustbin of eternal oblivion.

I can never remember if In Utero was '93 or '94. If it wasn't '94, it doesn't really count as the last ten years, now does it?

Bjork's Homogenic if there's any justice and Things Fall Apart by Roots. OK Computer too. I think Interiors by Brad is damn near flawless.

The answer is not many. Here are a few albums that I think I will be listening to in 20 years:

Travis - The Man Who
David Gray - White Ladder
Embrace - The Good Will Out
Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
Porno for Pyros - Good God's Urge

Wow! Almost everything else I play ad nauseum is pre '94 (except FB).

Shoot me down, but I think the Foo Fighters' self titled is excellent.
I can't really think of much that will 'stand the test of time'.
In Utero was '93.
The Strokes. I've only heard two songs off their new album, one I wasn't moved by, but Reptilia, I love that. Interweaving melodies. It sounded a little Pixies.

I did have a few records to mention, but now I think about it, to me, they're no Surfer Rosa or In Utero or White Album or Transformer.

It's getting colder....

I think the White Stripes will stand the test of time, I can only imagine what kind of music Jack White is going to churn out in the upcoming years. Jawbreaker's Dear You will stand the test of time. Drawing a blank now.

Any of the sonic youth albums. hehe (in the last ten year) and erm, well, errrrrrr, Hole Celebrity SKin, and Live through this. OK, so shoot me, but ill still love them in 20 years.

Cant think of anything really, most my fav albums are way before 94.

Yep, if you search in electronic music or hip-hop you'll find a bunch of such records. I was about to mention Massive Attack's Blue Lines, but it was released in '91 so I don't know if it counts. I'll say Björk, Plastikman's Consumed, Tricky's Maxinquaye... Wu-Tang Clan maybe... Beastie Boys...
In indie music I'd say Beck, Pavement, Palace... What else...

Lemonjelly.ky gets my vote too. As for the Beastie Boys,if I had to pick one it'd be the 89 effort, Paul's Boutique. I never grow tired of that, it feels like the Sgt. Pepper of hiphop. And that's the second time in two days I've heard about the Scott Walker one. Hmm.

Screw Sublime's self-titled...too radio sounding, at least in my opinion.

Now, 40 Oz. To Freedom...that is a timeless album. It's just great. I'll go long periods without hearing it, then throw it on while I'm driving and it just fucking GROOVES so damn well. I love it...

realmeanmotorscutor, I used to be anti-Sublime as well. Always lumped them together w/ 311 and all those other retarded "pot lover" bands. But honestly, listen to 40 Oz. and Robbin the Hood, there is some really, really good stuff there. The singers voice is really good (is Brad Nowell his name?), or should i say, WAS really good. and the instrumentation is awesome. Sublime had a signature bass/drum groove that just overtakes you. It's undeniably groovy. Almost all of their songs have good energy to them and kind of straddle different genres, blending them pretty successfully (mainly dancehall reggae and punk rock.)

The White Stripes and The Strokes are often mentioned together but they're really quite different... and actually, when this topic came up in a music magazine, a while ago, the White Stripes were among those bands that WILL definitely stand the test of time- although Jack's the 1st one to admit that they won't be able to make that kind of music for ever, with the limited range of instruments and sounds they've got.
Personally, I bloody hope the Strokes will still be around...

Aside from P4P (which I haven't heard) I can't agree with any of these, sorry.

New Adventures In HiFi maybe...

Although, I wasn't setting out to make a point, I do realise that there has been a dearth of high class bands since 94. I guess there'll be a few more underground records that will be recognised as classics later on. 'I See A Darkness' by Bonnie Prince Billy maybe?

I just though of Johnny Cash's American Recordings albums, I reckon they'll stick around.

I gotta say I LOVE The Good Will Out. I don't give a fuck what anyone says, that is a GREAT album. The faster songs are average but the slower (and thankfully there's alot more of them) ones are fookin genuine moments of white boy soul. His voice get's slagged off to fook 'cos it's techincally poo, but there is such honesty in his singing that it fits the songs prefectly.

I could go on forever but I know nobody will agree so I will stop now and move on to the original question, as seen from the point of view of most music critics.

I reckon' :

Jeff Buckley's 'Grace'
Radiohead's 'OK Computer'
The White Stripes 'Elephant'
The Strokes 'Is This It'
Coldplay (Erm, their last one - forgotten the name )
Oasis' 'What's The Story Morning Glory' & Definately Maybe (argue all you like, wether you and I agree with it or not - IT WILL stand the test of time in most people's eyes (ears?)

In Utero is '93 so it doesn't qualify, though it will obviously stand the test of time. There are loads of others that would stand the test of time for me but I am trying to look at what music critics will be having in their 'Top 100 Album's Of All Time' lists in years to come.

How predictable to see Cheesestring reply first!!!

I know you don't like them and I'm not saying I do either but if you are telling me that those two albums will go from being top 20 (top 10 in WTSMG's case) in critics lists of the greatest albums ever, to being forgotten, then you are sadly mistaken pal (with marabone?). Like it or lump it I'm afraid!!!

Me predictable? Who got 1400 posts in a matter of days? heh heh.

Much as I don't like to admit it, Morning Glory will probably hang around for a bit yet. Its very era-defining, more so really than Blur's at the time. I do think Blur will have more longevity in the long run.

And what chu whinging about me replying first? You well no that I have no life and spend virtually all my free time on this evil life-consuming internet thingummy.

I don't know them personally, so I don't hate them as such... I just dislike their music. Again, I don't want to admit it, but I really liked Morning Glory when it came out. I think its dated now, but there's some good songs on there, and they were the best band around at the time, give or take Radiohead. Laugh at Britpop as we may, it wa nice to see a few more guitar-based bands on the telly, if nothing else.

Exactly Cheeseman, and they finally delivered me from dance msuic hell.

I loved guitar bands since I was a kid, but I also liked crappy house music (although some of it was fantastic, looking back - stuff from the late eighties, Hacienda days). Anyways I was in Ibiza with some of my school mates (not my mates anymore, I only associate with guitar freaks now) and I had a fever. I stayed in one night when the others went out. I sat on the balcony and decided to put some music on. I rummaged around the tapes but could only find dance music. That was until I stummbled upon a very early Oasis live tape. I put it on and it made me realise that I HAD to kick dance music on the head once and for all and devote my entire life to the guitar (my god I am turning into The Gunn!!!). They just sounded so fresh, so vital for that time, for our country. I loved The Beatles and Pink Floyd but they didn't have that freshness, they weren't a band that I could call my own. They would always be my dads, 'cos he introduced me to them. they filled a hole for me (not literally - oo-er!!!)

Of course they are shit now and I never play any of their records, but I still recognise what they did for me as a kid.

Fair enough then.
I used to work with a guy who used to tell me that I was absolutely, definitely, going to be a dance music head in the next few years. Oh well. I went to sound engineering school and I'm still not, which kind of proves him wrong. There's very little electronic music that holds my attention, however, my favourite record of last year is one, and could be a contender in this thread. I've talked about this band incalculable times, M83, the record is 'Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts'.

I'll look out for it.

I still love Prodigy's early stuff. The first two albums are brilliant. Again, I don't listen to them now, but if any songs of them come on in a club, then I go mental.
