Is anyone a "hardcore" Martini's fan, or just a fan because Joey is a Pixie. I personally have the Martini's first album and will probally get the new one in May or June, but mainly because he's a Pixie. Am I missing out on something? |

I think that most of us know the Martinis because of the connection to the Pixies.
But their music is very different (Joey's wife writes both lyrics and music), and I think it deserves attention on its own merit.
There should soon be a page dedicated to the Martinis' album and ep on Alec Eiffel (http://www.aleceiffel.net).

I saw the Martini's twice back in 1995 at TT the Bear's in Cambridge, MA. David Lovering was on drums. They were really good and the magical part of them was Joey's guitar playing. It's so distinct. At the time, I never thought the Pixies would ever get back together, so hearing that Joey sound was great. His wife is a great front person. Very Kim Deal-esque I thought. I alwys meant to buy there CD from there website, but then they stopped selling it. There were some really good songs. I remember one song called Lava which especially stood out live. |

I have their album, it's good, mainly because I love Joey (of pixies fame) and their bass player Petra Haden (of That Dog fame). But it has to be said that Linda is the center point of that band and she has some great skills of her own.

Just got the Smitten Sessions ep (which came signed by Joey & Linda) and on first listen I think I like it more than the album of a some years ago. Seems like they're intent on something different, a little poppier, which works. Looking forward to the new album. |

From the Atomic Records newletter:
The Martinis - The Smitten Sessions EP PIXIES related! THE MARTINIS are Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago with classically-trained popster Linda Mallari. Their new CD, Smitten, comes out May 4. But right now, we have The Smitten Sessions EP, a limited edition release which includes new singles, rare demos, a non-LP Martinis track, and a rare instrumental by Joey. And oh yeah - Pixies drummer Dave Lovering drops by to play on a track! Pick up this specially-priced EP at Atomic today! Oh yeah part 2--it's autographed!
I'm heading over there right now,

I might be missing something but I really don't here Joey "Pixies" Santiago when he is Joey "Martinis" Santiago, not that the Martinis aren't worth a listen, but there isn't alot of Pixies there - his wifes style is really distinctive and mellow, and reminds me more of the excellent Geraldine Fibbers

Really? I don't see the connection between the Martinis and the GF. I'll listen more closely next time.

On the first Martini's release - Paper Doll certainly I think there is a resemblance. Obviously not as country twinged. (vilainde are you into GF? I have Butch and Lost Somewhere... but have lost track of them after that - do you know if they are still together?)

I bought the "Smitten Sessions" e.p. on Monday, awesome stuff. Joey's playing is great (was there ever a doubt?) and Linda Mallari's vocals are superb. I love the sound of "Out Upon the Road", "Right Behind You" is good, "Such a Fake" rocks (Linda sings it with such heart), "You are the One" has the classic Pixies sound (soft, then LOUD!!), and I've always loved "Walls of Silence" (it was available a while ago on mp3.com). David (Lovering) also plays drums on this release. I believe he plays on "Out Upon the Road" and "Such A Fake". I only say this because the style is similar to his. It's just like with some of Frank's albums - Joey is only listed as "additional guitar", but the selections he performs on are not specified. Oh well. Overall this is a GREAT release. I've played it a few times already and I love it. Joey's songs, like his guitar playing, are very melodic, and well crafted. Can't wait for the full length. It will be released May 4th.

Hey, Steve "the thing" T... 2 things:
1) I have a real name, which is Denis. 2) Yeah, I love the GF. The band doesn't exist anymore, but Carla Bozulich (lead singer) is doing a solo career, playing a lot with super-guitarist Nels Cline (who was already here on Butch). Last year she released "Red Headed Stranger", which is a song-by-song cover of the Willie Nelson record. Nelson even appears on 2 tracks. It's an awesome album, very laid-back, some kind of "haunted country music". One of my faves from last year. And then this month she released "I'm Gonna Stop Killing", which includes 2 tracks from Red Headed Stranger and 7 live tracks. And guess what? Yesterday I went to the record store and I bought both the Martinis EP and the Carla Bozulich live LP. Still haven't listened to them but I'll try to post a review.

Cheers Denis - will definetely be checking some of that stuff out - especially Red Headed Stranger. Have you heard any Tarnation - you'd probably be really into them they do "haunted country music" like no other...

I was waiting for someone to mention Tarnation. I went out and bought Gentle Creatures after hearing Paula Frazer's voice on Cornershop's CD (Born for the 7th Time). It doesn't get a lot of play around my house but damn if she can't sing, no one can! IMO.
Why is 'monosyllabic' such a long word? |

Does Tarnation still exist? I only have a live promo ep by them but I like it. I think it dates back to '96. I listened very quickly to the Bozulich live LP yesterday. It's kinda weird, but it sounds great. You got 2 GF songs (Outside Of Town - 13 minutes version! - & Arrow To My Drunken Eye), a song from Red Headed Stranger, covers of a Neil Young and a Marianne Faithfull song, and various unreleased stuff. It mixes alt. country, free jazz and guitar improv by Nels Cline with Carla's wonderful voice. Very nice indeed, but I strongly recommend you to get Red headed Stranger first.

The Martinis-A Revelation Distracted Records have found the Holy Grail Of Indie Power Pop,and Linda Mallari and Joey Santiago have fixed some Martinis in it!!!Smitten shows the greatest talent revelation of this year and the new milenium.Powerful and full of emotion,Linda's voice is truly a revelation. She's a charismatic and gifted singer/songwriter,guitarist and classically trained pianist. Her Pixie husband Joey, provides a perfect layer of dreamy, surfy and distorted guitar tones that elevate their music to another dimention and transports the listener to a perfect sonic nirvana ecstasy.Add to the cocktail the drumming talents of Josh Freese(The Vandals/A Perfect Circle)and other accomplished players who make Smitten an enjoyable masterpiece from start to finish!!! THE MARTINIS: Smitten
The nerrrrr that kickstarted a million mixtapes, the skzzzz that opened a million college radio shows: the unholy-yet-melodic din that Joey Santiago strangled out of his guitar in archetypal alt-rockers the Pixies has been imitated, never duplicated and, in the 11 years since their demise, practically silent.
Those familiar buzzes and squonks have returned—albeit in a different form. After years of rumor and hearsay, The Martinis have finally poured out of Los Angeles with their debut record, Smitten, a sunny monster of a pop record that runs the energetic hooks of chief singer/songwriter Linda Mallari against Santiago’s signature angular assault.
“I guess it’s just an inherent style I have. It’s more of a contrast this time around. These definitely have pop structures and I thought it would be kind of neat to put that sound back in,” Santiago says. “Making shapes… that’s what I do.”
Produced by Brad Cook and Blag Dahlia of the Greedy Brothers production team (Foo Fighters, the Distillers, Vandals, Ben Harper, Fishbone) and featuring the rhythm support of Smash Mouth bassist Paul De Lisle and drummer-of-all-trades Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle, etc.), Smitten is a collection of 11 candy hearts dedicated to loves loved, loves lost and everything in between.
The Martinis sound is a study in contrast. There’s Santiago, the self-taught, gloriously erratic note-mangler who dropped out of college to form the Pixies with roommate Charles Thompson, a.k.a. Black Francis, a.k.a. Frank Black; then there’s Mallari—classically trained in piano and voice, Emerson College music minor and a seasoned road dog (well, with the hyper-cheerful Up With People troupe, of all things). She met Santiago in 1987 right after a tour, both sitting side-by-side in a now-defunct Boston dive, the Rathskellar.
“I was sitting at the bar while my friend was playing pinball for beers,” recalls Mallari. “Joey was sitting right at the side of me and we were both looking through the mirror; I look over and I go ‘Oh my god are you Filipino?! Oh my God, I’m Filipino too!” He said, “No you’re not!” I had to rattle off all the bad words I knew in Tagalog! I gave him my phone number… ‘I write music, if you ever want to write music together call me!’”
And how did the music go? “Ahhh! I just wanted to pick up on her,” laughs Santiago. “I wanted to make music too, I suppose… but I got very busy. You know, with the other band.”
I HOPE YOU ALL ENJOY THIS WONDERFUL REVIEW AND INTERVIEW!!!! |
