Lately when I go to buy a squishee I've noticed that they've started to individually wrap each straw in either paper or plastic.

I had quite the discussion with some people and I'm curious about your opinions (or really just to prove me right ;)

So what's worse?

1) Plastic wrappers
because plastic doesn't biodegrade or
2) Paper wrappers
because of the whole tree situation

OR

3) There should be no wrappers, people are too freaked out
about germs.
4) Wrappers on straws is trivial because its the bigger guys
that cause real pollution.

3) Down with wrappers!

Seriously, people are psychotic about germs. Newsflash: Anywhere you go where you get a drink with the straw in, and that straw has been put in by a person's hand. You've survived up until now and will continue to survive without the little plastic fantastic wrappers.

Humanity is doomed if we continue to weaken our immune systems by not exercising it a little. Welcome to the allergy age.

Heh, that reply is hilariously dark and melodramatic. :)

There, all better.

I agree with that. In fact, whenever I'm getting one of these wrapped straws I make a point of pulling it out and getting the cashier to run it through their hair for me.

what's all this? Oh I see, you're all Canadian. See, straws have always been individually wrapped here in the US. At least as long as I can remember. Well, that's not entirelt true. Sometimes there are those dispensers but rarely. And no one ever puts my straw in for me. Another thing, you guys actually have Squishees like at the Quick-E-Mart?

We've got a Kwik-E-Mart on 107th too, though...I've always wondered if they called them Squishees there.

How about down with straws? Straws are one of the top ten blights to mankind. We're not two years old; we don't need the help; we need the speed. We drink faster, happier, and in a less stupid manner when we eliminate the straws.

Environmentally speaking, I would say paper. There are many things printed on paper, such as that are far less useful than wrappers.

Besides, plastic is way too dangerous. However, I am ignorant in the tree situation.

You don't get Squishees here... are they the same as Slush Puppies? Can you get all-syrup ones, a la Simpsons, and go on a Squishee bender?

Interesting Sam, no straws at all...
Hard to drink a slurpee without a straw tho.
Maybe we should all just start using licorice ;)

I'm far from an expert on the environmental impact of wrapping material, but plastic seems like it would be worse to me, too. Of course, though, I've got to weigh my own health against that of the environment, and in that case plastic would undoubtedly be better: if my straw were going to get dragged through mud, vinegar, and some nameless filth, I would much rather have good ol' plastic on my side than flimsy paper. So declare my fence officially sat upon, but at least you can see now where the idea of wrapping straws originated.

Nothing is ever something.

I'd go for paper too. And drinking faster and "more efficiently" would only make us Americans more fat. Super Super size that gulpy!

I'm pretty obsessed about washing my hands. I say paper is better...we can plant more trees. We can also recycle paper.

I don't wash my hands unless I've just gone to the toilet, or they are obviously dirty or sticky. I've also stopped buying "anti-bacterial" products over the last couple years-- we don't need more strains of superbacteria. Maybe it's just coincidence, but I haven't had a cold for three or four years.

See it was my opinion that there should be none but if there has to be wrappers they should be paper b/c at least its biodegradable.
Then all hell broke loose!

While we're on this, there are many items that used to be made of paper (or not at all) that are now made of plastic. I was horrified when, after ordering an ice cream cone last summer, I was presented with a cone in a little plastic holder. It even had a drip lip. Hold on....I'm going to break into an anti-Bush tirade. The oil industry has done such a good job of selling its product, largely through our good friend the internal combustion engine, that we are stuck with an overabundance of petrolium byproducts. So what to do with all the leftovers? Create lots and lots of plastic products and flood the marketplace with them. Even advertise the benefits of plastics in tv ads, emphasizing their use in the medical industry. Plastics save lives, don't you know! Yeah, okay. I'm just a little bit jealous of the people in Minneapolis tonight.

Howd you type that last 'germs'without a key board?!?!?! Thats amazing!!!!!!!!

Butr yes, I say paper too, for the above mentioned reasons.

I also agree with Dave though, we are much too obsessed with germs, and our immune systemas are just getting weaker and weaker because they arent being exposed to anything.

Some day, terrorists will realise this, and theyll be 'GERM BOMBS'!!!!

or Have i just told all the terrorists....oh dear...

To the best of my knowledge, the first recorded incident of a germbomb was in Crimea in the 14th century when a bunch of Genoese merchants were fleeing the Tartars and took refuge in a city, which the Tartars laid siege to. The city was holding up for a long time so the Tartars took to catapulting plagueridden corpses of their comrades over the walls.
