Count the "F's" in the following text:
FINISHED FILES ARE THE RE- SULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIF- IC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF YEARS...(see below)
Managed it ? Scroll down only after you have counted them, okay? Do you think there are three?
How many ? 3?
Wrong, there are 6 !! -- no joke. Read it again.
The reasoning behind it is further down.
The brain cannot process "OF".
Incredible or what? Go back and look again!!
Anyone who counts all 6 "F's" on the first go is a genius. Three is normal, four is quite rare.
I only counted two - KOK |

It's not that the brain cannot process 'of', but that it reads the 'f' as a 'v' when processing it.

This is an old reading test. It is used to see if a kid (jr high level generally) is reading and comprehending at a decent speed.
Reading and counting all 6 F's in that example is an indicator of poor reading ability. It generally means that the person is reading very slowly and still sounding out syllables. A strong reader is essentially filtering the words to get the meaning, rather than projecting each letter into their brain and discerning the word.

Yeah but Dallas, I knew it was a trick, it was obvious, so I made sure I read slowly to not be caught out. I always speed-read normally, but you'd have to get out of bed early to catch me out with such a test.

Sure, sure Homer...
Just kidding, I understand. Usually you present the text, ask the person to read it, then say 'how many f's?'. Then they go back and re-read the same way they just did, but, try to count as they go.
Its also done with text that has only 1 'f' in 'of' and the question is true/false 'any F's?'. Its interesting how the brain processes written text... |

I'm a genius, and I don't need no damn test to prove it. I'm going to go with the three F's = genius rule though...

Hehe, I got this in an e-mail one time so I carefully went through it, I actually typed it on wordpad so that I could count as I copied. So I guess I cheated. The first time I saw this I only got three, though, it's crazy. |

Okay I know when you realise you´re in the majority it´s time to reassess the situation but I´m going for not noticing the ofs as a sign of my brains massiveness too.

Is it that every word begins in a CAPITAL letter or that the spring isn't in the summertime?

Well, generally you don't say "The Spring." I mean some people might but I usually just say "I can't wait for Spring."
