It's the Birthday, it's the Birthday, it's the Birthday boy or girl!!
Happy Birthday Frank (or Charles). Seeing how it's his birthday I thought it would be fun if we all talked about they're favorite Frank Black/ Black Francis moments... to commemorate his life and his career. Cheers Frank, may you have 39 more!!

I think my favorite moment might be from June 16, 2000 at the 9:30 Club. I was sitting on the floor with Jeremy (Bennies) long before the show started, during sound check, eating dinner, when Frank Black came over and sat down on the floor with us and talked to Jeremy. That was when he handed Jeremy the coveted copy of Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day...he said they didn't really want to release it but were thinking of making it like an internet exclusive...oh how it became that! That was pretty cool...

Another cool time was at the Black Cat, when he was in The Bennies 'dressing room' on a cell phone...this crazy bitch was walking in front of me back stage and she saw Frank and was being all stupid, and he was very obviously annoyed (cause he was on the phone). I snuck past and grabbed my coat as he finished up. He said something like "Who was that?" and I'm like "I have no idea man," and then he was like "Well, I know *you're* supposed to be back here..." I was taken aback cause he actually recognized/remembered me (he totally blew me off earlier that day at the solo gig during the signing...I told him how I run the AP and co-run fb.net blah blah blah how he impacted me and he just gave me a blank stare...he should have just punched me in the balls). I sound like such a creepy stalker fan now so I'm gonna shut up.

FB also "blankly stared" at me once too, but i was interupting him and shouldn't have. the next time i met him under much better cirumstances (actually through jeremy of the bennies and zanni) and he was super nice and even took a pic with me - i was so amazed at his politeness (and a bit drunk) that i barely remember the experience at all. at least i have photo proof!

Have only had one brief encounter in person, but one of my favs is him referring to me as a 'nice young man in Canada' on BBC radio. =)

Well it doesn't have to be times you've met the guy. Just things that he's done or said that you thought was genius. Mine is still the dancing bear incident, that was great. I can't find a way to link it up so others can read and enjoy.

I should make it my signature since I won't shut up about it, but my favorite Frank moment was when he played Valentine for me last year. After I loudly shouted it out in a moment where he was tuning his guitar. He said "I'll think of something...it usually takes me about five minutes". So I shouted "Valentine!" and he looked at me (I was sitting about three feet from him) and said "Valentine. Per request." He also said "thank you for getting me out of that spot." Then he explained Valentine with a little story and the audience kind of politely laughed. He looked at me and said "she's with me".

Yay!

In the Underworld in Camden, July 2003, he told off some guys for singing along to one of the new songs too loudly. He said they were disturbing his concentration or something. That was kinda funny, not for them guys though. Oh, he also opened with 'Into the White' and said "you guys don't even know what this is"....and I admit, I didn't until he started singing. It was the last song I was expecting.

It's getting colder....

THOSE WERE MY TICKETS !!!! I never should have gone to my college reunion. Anyway, I got to see him two days before and I was more than happy to sell my Saturday tickets to Em -- Ramona so she could have such a wonderful encounter with The Man.

Yeah, college reunions are for suckers!

Did you ever email your address? I still want to send you copies of the shows! Including the one you attended. Email me!

Oh, and thanks again! I often add you in the story when I tell it to my friends. Again and again.

Underworld, Camden, 2003. He stopped 'Horrible Day' half way thru to ask the hecklers to be quiet. And was like "OK, you've got an advance copy of the album. You know all the lyrics. Probably better than I do. So just go easy on me, ok?". A sterling performance, as he just went into another song.

El Barto-

You lucky sunuvabitch. I was at both those shows. And they were pretty awesome. They would have definitely been MORE so if I was hanging out backstage like you...

Sneak me back there next time
