Here's a topic you've never seen the likes of before. Okay, I've quit before for extended amounts of time, like a few months without a cigarette at all. And at that time, I just absolutely hated cigarettes. I felt as though my life would fall apart before my very eyes if I had a single cigarette. Now, I like the taste of them even less than I did then, I think, yet I still need one, and am repulsed by the taste and the smoke whenever I have one, yet I continue to need them or else I go haywire. Right now I'm a nervous wreck because I haven't had one in over 24 hours, I think. Luckily, I'm not keeping track. I don't even smoke all that much. A few a day tops. Some days I go without them at all. But why can't I just go back to not smoking at all? I went two solid months without EVER wanting one, and then just slipped up one day I got back into the habit. ARGH!

Ha, right now I'm thinking I'll just have a beer instead of a cigarette. As long as it's something addictive and destructive!

This seems to be a common problem that I have great difficulty in understanding. Surely people have enough willpower, drive or whatever you want to call it to stop doing something, whether it's excessive drinking, drugs, smoking or, I dunno, online gaming. They recognise that it would be a good idea to stop the activity but feel there is some kind of force acting against them.
Just stop. It's no big deal. Or carry on, that's no big deal either.
I presume you want to stop for health reasons TarTar?? That would be plenty enough of a reason for me. We're only given one set of lungs. Once you've ruined them there's nowhere else to go. I would hate to be 50 and be unable to go hill walking or ride a bike.
If you're feeling desperate for a cig, go for a jog, do some press ups, meditate, eat an apple. Turn the negative into a positive.

I smoked a few at college but only when I was drunk. Never got the point of it all I suppose.
My wife smoked when we first met but she managed to give up within a couple of years. Just decided that it wasn't a very nice habit and gave up. Simple as that.

Case for cigarettes :
OK, I'm not really a smoker, and I guess it's really bad for your health. But give me a break. You can ride a bike when you're a 50 years old smoker. My father is, and he beats me in tennis every time we play. And girls who smoke are soooo cute.
OK, this isn't helping if you're trying to quit. I'm sorry. Try eating candy instead.

I quit 3 yrs ago tho last summer I was offered one and I thought Hey it´s been so long I should be able to smoke one now and again, and boom I was buying a pack a day for another 2 months and the second time quitting was more difficult. So there doesn´t seem to be any safety statute for me. Twas nice to get my tastebuds back twice tho.

I think you just really suck at tennis. Oh, and about the girls being "soooo cute"...Oh, I know! I just love yellow teeth and smelly clothes. Mmmm....delicious!
Edit: Ah, another thought about girls who smoke: It's fucking HORRIBLE when women smoke when they are pregnant. Their children are born addicted to nicotine. They don't have much of a chance. It's fucking disgusting. And yes, it is bad for you and it hurts people around you...literally. So shut the fuck up, no I won't give you a break. Just wait until your dad is diagnosed with lung cancer. I'm sure you'll be all happy towards the idea then. Sorry, but you know it's more than likely going to happen soon. Hey, I feel you there! My asthma gets really worked up when there's second hand smoke around. Plus, with the whole lyme thing, if I have a bad asthma attack it can be potentially fatal...and...that's not cool..at all. Secondary infections aren't good, especially when they have to do with the lungs, heh. That's why I refuse to be around smokers. Period. I especially hate it when I'm with friends and their friends are about to light up and I have to explain to them why I just can't be around it. They get all defensive and are like "Well...how the fuck was I supposed to know? God!" That's one of the many ignorant traits of most smokers. I mean, seriously, they're insulting themselves when they say stuff like that...because well...yeah, you didn't know...but it's your responsibility to know. So either you ask everyone in the premises if it's okay with them or you just don't smoke...otherwise you could be seriously damaging people. It's disgusting how there are smokers who think they're losing a "right" to smoke in public now and get all worked up about it. You don't have a right to do anything that physically hurts other people. Like..when there's a no smoking sign and I see someone smoking I ask them if they could put it out. Either they put it out and give me that nasty "Fuck you." glare or they act mature and even apologize! It's great when they apologize! So there are the exceptions for everything, of course.

And TarTar, if you actually quit (I did it with no help, it just took a few tries), after a couple of years you can call yourself just "Tar". And then "Tar-free". Wouldn't that be cool?
Not too sure about that one...

I used to smoke a lot of weed (only stopped cause I'm currently skint) and although I put baccy into every joint I never got addicted, it just seems so pointless that you get no buzz. I do like a few roll ups when I'm drinking though as it slows down how fast I drink.

Hee-hee.
It's true, TarTar--nicotine is more addictive than heroin. It has both a relaxant and stimulant effect and is a total bitch to kick.
I smoked over a pack a day for fifteen years. I found the little counter that you can dowload at www.quitnet.com very helpful; you type in how many cigarettes a day you smoke and how much you pay per pack and it calculates for you on a daily basis how much money and how many minutes (or hours/days/years as time passes) of life you've saved. That really helped me b/c the only angle at which I'm really able to attack the addiction from is wanting to not be fucked over financially by the tobacco industry. When I remember that I'm paying for the privilege of slowly killing myself, it pisses me off enough to keep me smoke-free.

Cigarettes are one of the greatest things ever made. They make fun times more fun and they help out on shitty days. You can't always depend on people, but if you've got the money, cigarettes are always there when you need them.
By the way, it seems like every asthmatic I've ever met is hyper-sensitive, and completely obsessed with their asthma. I swear to god they seem to deliberately put themselves into situations where people are smoking so they can hack and couch and tell everyone about their latest attack. And I'm not saying that it's all in their heads, but sometimes it seems that way. Most of them are heavy girls who have unresolved problems with their parents. The only time they're happy is when they can get someone to change whatever they're doing to accommodate them. When someone tells me they have asthma I run the other way.

jimmy,

Bahahahahahaha! But you're totally right, jimmy...We asthmatics are pests of society....
Seriously, though...I don't think anyone who is truly "hyper-sensitive" would ever deliberately put themselves in a position where they're more likely to have an attack...I can't really describe it..but I'm guessing it's probably what a heart-attack feels like. Fucking scary. It's not like we can really help it, either. And no, I'm not "obsessed with my asthma". I am obsessed with my Lyme Disease...but for good reason. Dying isn't on my to-do list right now. But hey, go ahead and stick with your stereotype if it makes you happy.
By the way, it seems like every smoker I've met is an asshole.
Edit: Ah, here's something else for you. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20040404/hl_nm/health_smoking_dc_3 Seems smoking hurts a lot more people around you than you thought, hmm?
Another Edit: Wow, you may have created some asthmatics yourself...
Each year, secondhand smoke is associated with an estimated 8,000–26,000 new asthma cases in children. Annually an estimated 150,000–300,000 new cases of bronchitis and pneumonia in children aged less than 18 months (7,500–15,000 of which will require hospitalization) are associated with secondhand smoke exposure in the United States.

ahh, tartar, I feelyour pain. I am currently writing this while smoking a cigarette.
I have been on and off for the last year. I gave up for around 3/4 months, and then bad stuff happened over christmas, and started dinking alot - therefore smoking a lot...
Some how i actually feel addicted this time round tho, before, i knew I could quit.
I hate smoking. I think when people smoke, it shows alack of self restraint and will power, and also a lack of respect for both themselves and others around them.
I am going to quit before June (when jim comes over)...so yeah. I feel your pain Tar tar

The best way for you to effectively quit smoking is something that'll take the place of the oral fixation...something you can put in your mouth every time you feel the urge for a cigarette...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...........

I smoke around five or seven cigarettes a day (twenty in 5h when I'm drunk, but that's not often), sometimes less (the day after i got drunk), so I think I'm not a big smoker but when I haven't got one, it drives me crazy, I really can't stop thinking about anything else. I can't imagine quit smoking: No more coffee, no more alcool, no more good lunches.
About asthma: I had asthma when I was kid, then I had a big lung disease (pneumonie) at ten, started smoking at 17 and never had asthma anymore! |
