Here's a director I haven't seen brought up much around here. I'm a big fan. I've seen just about everything he's done: Slacker, Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise, Suburbia, Tape, and School of Rock. I thought all of those were great movies. The only film he's done that I didn't care for was Waking Life, which I only watched about half of. Though Slacker had lots of rambling monologues, they were often interesting even when they were pretentious. In Waking Life, I felt it was just existential bullshit, and it got old really fast. Just one character after another speculating on the big picture. Really lame. I didn't like the animation, either. Still, I suppose it was a bold step for Linklater.
I'd say my favorite film is Suburbia. It doesn't romanticize the slacker 20-somethings, but it doesn't parody them either. Giovanni Ribisi really carries the film in my opinion. After watching the Gift a few days ago, it's really struck me what an awesome actor he is.
So what Linklater do you like?

I think "Slacker" and "Waking Life" are his best movies. When I saw "Waking Life" it was almost as soul-sweet and grabbed as deep as "Wings of Desire". I want to see it again. But what do I know?

I love Dazed and Confused. I saw it for the first time a week or two before I started high school, and I thought "Man, I can't wait till high school. It's gonna be awesome!" Yeah...it really wasn't.

glad to see another Linklater fan. i love Linklater. even though his work is really uneven for me. i feel the same exact way as apl4eris. SLACKER and WAKING LIFE, for me, are his masterpieces. i thought BEFORE SUNRISE was a good, sappy romantic film. and SUBURBIA was interesting. i think everything in between has its moments, but none of the other films are great films in themselves.
i love the fact that he's not afraid to experiment and makes very personal films (at least, the ones mentioned above). and he seems like an extremely cool dude in general. he seems like he'd be a great person to have a beer with and shoot the shit with, wax philosophical etc..
WAKING LIFE breathed fresh air into cinema, in my opinion. i think it's one of the best films of the decade so far. seriously. that was in that great year (2001) of bizarre films. MULHOLLAND DRIVE, SPIRITED AWAY.. we haven't seen anything as interesting in one year since then. after i saw waking life i wanted to give him a hug and thank him for making it. i understand how it's not for everyone, but i loved it. |

Dazed and Confused was my favorite. Slacker and Waking Life did not do too much for me, the quivering animation in Waking Life gave me a headache. I haven't even heard of Suburbia so I'll go look for it on DVD.School of Rock is released here this week-end, but I'm working dammit!

I am really surprised TAPE doesn't get mentioned more often here... I personally thought it was fantastic: very funny, with a great dialogue and impressive performances.
I also liked BEFORE SUNRISE a lot, and thought both WAKING LIFE and SLACKER were quite interesting.
Haven't seen School of Rock though: is it any good, or does it feel like a sell-out? |

Liked Dazed and Confused and Before Sunrise, Suburbia too. Couldn't stay awake during The Newton Boys.
