Today's random song of the day is Blast Off.

What do you think of it?

lyrics
I''m headed for the dark
Take shit as shit is
If you can take this town
I say good show
''Cause city hall all are freaks
And the coffee is getting weak

I''m going to make my mark
Maybe in show biz
Maybe on solid ground
I do not know
But I''m thinking all the time
And I''m saving all my dimes

Blast off
I can foresee foresee
Blast off

Cast off
Save all my money just for
Blast off

Blast off
I can foresee foresee
Blast off

Chemical
Take on my chemical for
Comatose

Comatose
Wake from a sleep that was
Six months

Rasthof
Zwanzig kilometers bis
Rasthof
I need it

Blast off
I can foresee foresee

And when we get there the Irish in
Me''s gonna claim it for France
I''m in a beckett trance
From all that chemical

Blast off
I can foresee foresee
Blast off

Union pour la promotion de la
Propulsion
Photonique

Isidis
Home on the dome of the
Isidis

Tops off
I think I''m gonna get some
Rocks off
I need it

Blast off
I can foresee foresee

And when we get there the Irish in
Me''s gonna claim it for France
I''m in a beckett trance
From all that chemical

And when we get there the Irish in
Me''s gonna claim it for France
I''m wearing Beckett''s pants
From all that chemical

And when we get there the Irish in
Me''s gonna claim it for France
I''m in a beckett trance
From all that chemical

And when we get there the Irish in
Me''s gonna claim it for France
I''m on a beckett rants
From all that chemical

Blast off
I can foresee foresee
Blast off

Cast off
Save all my money just for
Blast off

Blast off
I can foresee foresee
Blast off

Blast off

not bad but way too long, that's why I skip it most of the time (that and because the 2 following songs are so much better!)

Everytime the Song of the Day is longer than 5 mins, we get the same discussion... I'm all for epics and 7 minutes songs. Hurray for Blast Off!

There was a previous topic inquiring if amyone thought that 'Tossed' was like a working-version of this song. It's okay, not a personal fave. It sounds like Frank wants to save up enough money to buy a ticket on a Nasa flight or something-well, it makes me think of 'Czar', which was about John Denver wanting to go into space! The ranting because of chemicals sounds like some drug-induced mania!

Epic cool. Really like this one, although i haven't the faintest idea what FB is on about, the references to Ireland, France and Samuel Beckett are class.

i really like it, but the very beginning is not the best....as in i mean, the very first line.
if it weren't for the remainder of the song being totally kick-ass, it might have caused me to skip it.

I skip the rest of the song when I've heard the first verse.

The beginning is so Los Angeles-like
Love it!

The rest is just too 'flat'...
Miss any melody in this one.
Maybe too repetitive also

I also found this short but interesting article in French, about Blast Off & Robert Onion and their hidden references to Mars and space travels. (Sorry, I'm tired and too lazy to translate this. Maybe tomorrow...)

http://www.voir.ca/membres/profil_contributions.aspx?iIDMembre=1218

Generally, I think using a long song as the first track on an album is a mistake. "Blast Off" is a major exception. I love the intro, as well as what it develops into. Great music and lyrics, and a great way to start off one of Frank's best albums. What else is there to say?

Sweet, Frog! Thanks for the link. I never paid very much attention to that part of the lyrics before this. I got caught up in the Beckett references and then I guess I just got tired of it.

I like the song, but it does seem a bit too repetitive for me. Good dynamics at the beginning, nice idea, just the lack of interest in the repeated stanzas gets to be too much, and I want it to end.

Yeah, too long, sorry. I guess I tend to prefer the no nonsense rock'n'roll over extended jams.

I always turn the volume up when this comes on my mixed tape in the car, it's better when it's louder, and it's better when you're driving faster!

I really WANT to like this song, but...

To me, it sounds a little like the band might be going after some kinda Bowie Station to Station feel, but it never quite sounds badass or heavy or spacey enough for me. I really like long, groove-type songs so I don't have a problem with the length.

I do like it toward the end when Frank's singing gets crazy just a smidgen on the "When I get there the Irish in me" part.

It's a good song, but I usually skip to "St. Francis Dam Disaster". One thing that never slips past me is Frank's mis-pronounciation of the german line "Zwanzig kilometers bis Rasthof." It should be kilometer with no s.

Awesome song, but in my opinion it kind-of gets the album off to a slow and not-so-good start because it's so long and repetitive. I think it would be much better placed in the middle of the album.

I think the theme of the song is kinda, 'hit-you-over-the-head' obvious.....even if you dont get the beckett references. It seems to be about wanting to 'blast-off' ....hahaha. but seriously, with regards to his references to beckett, it should be noted that Beckett, mentored by James Joyce, had the same love-hate relationship with Ireland and had both exiled to france...both writers were highly critical of Ireland, and more particularly Dublin. As far as the refrain getting louder, that 'I'm on a Beckett Rant!', there is a parellel to the character , Lucky in Beckett's 'Waiting For Godot' (the epitomy of existential pieces), who goes on an incoherent 'Rant' that becomes louder and louder until he passes out.

While I might generally agree with you, I think "Blast Off" is a great opening song because of its start-out-slow-and-then-rock-out format. Sort of similar to "Los Angeles" in that respect, although not quite as complex (or as good, but few of Frank's songs ARE as good as "Los Angeles").

When he says, "I can forsee forsee" it reminds me of the John Lennon song "#9 Dream" where he says something like, "Ah bowakowa pousee pousee" (sounds like "pussy").

I agree, I think it would be a perfect Side 2, Track 1! that would be divine on da vinyl.
