Ah, Floop, you beat me. I just saw this and loved it. Didn't we talk about it in another thread? Maybe I dreamed it (ha!). Anyway, I thought it was smart and sweet and didn't pander to the audience (in other words, you were trusted to keep up) which was nice for a change.

Also, I love Kate Winslet. She really sold the whole thing for me.

I really want to see this, but the one thing that might be holding me back is Jim Carrey. Is he different in this movie? The one movie that I was able to stand, and actually enjoyed him in, was "Man on the Moon", but that was more because he was Andy Kaufman. I'd be chomping at the bit to go see this right away, if I knew he wouldn't be so grating as his usual self.

I thankfully overcame my fear (because of all the worthless Sandler movies) of Adam Sandler, and rented and loved "Punch Drunk Love", so hopefully this will be a similar scenario. I really enjoyed "Being John Malkovich".

i enjoyed it but i think it gave too much away too quickly. i had it all "figured" out about 25 minutes in. that being said, i still loved it

i think Jim Carrey has already proven that he is talented, despite all those annoying films he's done. he was great in THE CABLE GUY.. and since then he's done other edgy, interesting material: THE TRUMAN SHOW, MAN ON THE MOON (mentioned), ME, MYSELF AND IRENE (which i hear sucks, but it's still a respectable effort) .. don't avoid it because he's in it.

i was interested in SPOTLESS MIND, but somewhat skeptical going in. the director, Michael Gondry, did another Charlie Kaufman script called HUMAN NATURE which only turned out ok in my opinion. i think his work thus far has been best handled by Spike Jonze (Spike Jonze should be the only one allowed to direct his scripts).

that said, i really enjoyed the film . it perfectly captures the feelings of going through a long-term relationship and having it crumble around you.. and the feelings you have afterwards etc. in a fresh, bizarre way. i actually found it kind of depressing. i went to see it with this girl i've just started dating and it brought up all these old feelings about my last relationship. kind of a buzzkill when you're on a date.

but yeah, i thought he did a brilliant job visually blending the different realities of the characters - the past, the present, fantasies, nightmares etc.. it shows how memories work, and the chaos that's really going on inside someones head when they deal with the past, feelings etc.. in many ways it can be compared to MEMENTO, but i don't think it's quite as successful as that film is. but, it does give it a run for its money.

you're not likely to see anything nearly as interesting for a while, if not this whole year. i say go see it.

I really really really want to see this movie. I love seeing comedians playing serious roles. Jim Carrey was excellent in the Truman Show, Man on the Moon, and the Majestic...he really shows his true talent. Adam Sandlar was great in Punch Drunk Love...that movie truely fucks with your head. I loved Adaptation and Being John Malkovich. I think Charlie Kaufman could be my first writer that I really love.

Well I've never heard of this film and unlike many here I'm still not impressed by Carrey. Now the name Gondry makes me curious, he's the one responsible for some classic pop videos and a not so classic debut film right? Spike Jonze made the leap so it would be nice to see Gondry make a good film as well. Dammn, such a shame it would probably be another year before it gets to the cinemas over here. Sooooooo, when is the DVD release date then?

I just saw Man On The Moon the other night, really enjoyed it. Clearly the peak of Jim Carrey's existence is Dumb & Dumber, but there you go.

I also lurved Adaptation and liked Malkovich, so I might check this 'un out.

I know exactly what you mean, Apl. I had the same fears but I thought Jim Carrey was very low key, and sad, and thougtful - all of the things he hasn't been in movies before. You should definetly go see it, he will probably surprise you. I know I forgot he was "Jim Carrey!" & got sucked in the movie, which was very nice.

Cool, thanks ramona and floop -I trust your tastes! Looking forward to actually going to a movie this weekend. We never go out to the theater anymore. I think the only ones we've actually gone out to see since we moved to Columbus a year and a half ago were "Winged Migration" and "Bubba Ho-tep". I also really want to see "Fog of War" too - hope we can fit them both in before they're gone!

Its definately worth going and seeing. The movie touches some heavy subjects and does it very well, good screenplay simply put.

The best romantic comedy I've ever seen. Although putting this film into any specific genre is a disservice to the brilliance of Gondry's work.

Was really lucky to have caught this while I was spending my b-day week in New York. Opens UK on the 30th and I'll probably see it again. One of those rare films you leave feeling genuinely touched - was actually tearful at certian points. Maybe I just need to watch more sport and drink more beer.

Anyone watched the Michel Gondry Director's Works DVD thing? Loads of great stuff on there I hadn't seen alongside familiar videos...

Me and my friend went to see this down at a very cool cinema near me 0- that gets a bunch of previews and special showings, and cult classics and stuff, and we went to see michel Gondry, chris cunningham and spike jones sort of montage, showd loads of their various stuff - a sort of advertisement since they all have DVDs out now.
Was one of the best times ive had in a cinema!!

I just saw this film today.

WOW!!! Anyone who hasn't seen it, you HAVE to see it. You owe it to yourself. Especially if you have an ounce of romance in you. Despite being pretty sad in parts, it just reminded me (not that I needed reminding) just how fucking amazing it is to be in a relationship. In love! In a loving relationship!! I wanna fall in love again!!!

Brilliant script, direction, acting, THE LOT!!!

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!!!

Loved it!!!

And it didn't really bother me until you mentioned it Shakey, now I'm taking my 4.2-star rating and changing it to 4.1-stars. Is there anything else that bothered you? Maybe I should watch it again, actually, the timeline was a little hoky, it was neat how they tied it all together with the color of her hair though!

I would guess that elija wood's attempts to recreat her relationship with Joel jogged something in her subconscious that impelled her to hop on the LIRR. It was this same subconscious urges that made her talk to him on the train, i would imagine.

I love montauk. When they were first on the train I was upset because it obviously wasn't a LI train, so I was expecting a 'fake montauk', with some other town substituting for it, just as metro north substituted for lirr. I was so happy to actually see all the familar landmarks of the town. I spent every summer there as a kid.
