well i've spent ages going through tracks, i narrowed it down to hefner eventually, but i'm not sure about the track, it's on their b-sides kind of album 'Boxing Hefner' - i like it a lot... but i'm not sure you guys will like it, or if it's as good as one of their 'sweet' songs... but anyway, feel free to check out other stuff by them!

I like it. I was wondering if it was ever going to become a full-fledged song, 'cause it seemed like it was building up to something, and then it did. Reminds me a lot of Dexy's Midnight Runners, Poi Dog Pondering, and Camper van Beethoven. Enjoyable -would make good weeknight at the pub or laid-back summer get-together music. Not sure if it is the kind of stuff I would choose to listen to -but if it was playing I would like it....if that makes any sense at all...

Sorry, don't like this at all. Overlong. It would have been better compressed down to 3 minutes.

A pale imitation of The Waterboys I'm afraid.

In a notable comparison to my usual no-don't-like-your-music-you-damn-manc attitude on the music ring, i kind of like this. In the same way as apl at least. I probably wouldn't buy anything on the strength of this song, but its not offensive to me.

For some reason, I had it in my mind that Hefner were some manufactured pop-rock girl band - was there a five-minutes-of-fame band with a similar name?

Mmmm... didn't really care for it. Some interesting work on the pedal steel, but it really didn't feel like it went anywhere, I guess. It feels like they forgot to have the piano player show up in the choruses though. Some nice piano chords in here would've made this song far far better since the bass itself doesn't seem to hold enough low end/punch to keep the chorus moving and all that cool steel work becomes cool sounding noise. Listen again and imagine those choruses with some piano in there. I think that's what it's missing.

So the long and the short of it... I'm also with apl... if it came on, I wouldn't object, but I wouldn't pop it in the disc player.

not bad the reactions so far, normally people just say "can't stand his voice" or something... cheeseman are you thinking of hepburn? there is another band called hefner, some kind of dance band or something...

the song i chose, they were never going to record it, it was the song they finished gigs with, but they relented and recorded it... kind of explains why it's so long and such a build up.

Can't stand his voice.

Nah, in fact I haven't heard the song yet... Will be back when I have...

The other Hefner is a boring white hip-hop DJ type guy. Apparently each Hefner has asked the other Hefner to drop the name... No word from the founder of "Playboy" yet.

heh, yeah, i heard that. although the indie hefner are now making music under the name 'the french' which is a bit more indie-electronic, kind of postal service like. so i'm not sure if they're going to go back to doing stuff under the name 'hefner' or not. i think a lot of fans didn't like their last album as it was too electronic, too many keyboards, not enough guitar... i quite liked it though.

I really liked it.

It started out weakly, sounding alot like, um, the Proclaimers. (IMO)

Doesn't really go anyplace. It just sort-of builds and builds. Kinda reminds me of the Violent Femmes. (Somehow brings to mind "Good Friend" / Maybe it was the sort-of pitiful, pleading tone in the voice of the singer. I probably missed the point.)

I'll add my voice to the choir... What strikes me is that you have to wait 2 mins before it kicks off... that's a LONG time. From then on it gets more interesting - I like the country-ish feel of the instrumentation - but I can see how it would work much better live. They should have made a 3-minute studio version.

Its uneccesarily long, reminds me of FB a little, and it keeps skipping and pissing me off. Pretty cool song though besides that. I've heard quite a bit of Hefner stuff some of it shit some of it not so, this falls into the latter. The letters A V and G jump to mind.

I walked into that one didn't I?

I meant the calling it avg part, before anyone decides to make another joke :)

The song annoys me so much I can't listen to it, it skips constantly. Anyway, we ready for the final round?

skips? i don't get what you mean by that really?

and in reply to people saying it's too long... and there should be a single version... i love songs like that, big lengthy songs that build up and build up then something different happens at the end... like bredan benson's jetlag... or straw's we don't belong...

anyway, yeah, next round!

The track has a bunch of skips as though it were a bad CD or something. Probably some method they use to provide the whole track for download and not have it kept. It's not a bad idea, usually those 30sec clips don't give you an idea.

I thought that the little jumps were, um, intentional.

Damn!

Wow, another blast from the past. I saw Straw supporting Feeder in, um, 1998, and they've done approximately nothing since. Heh heh. Incidentally, Muse were third on the bill...

I think it should have ended at the 1:20 mark. That would have made it good. Waiting 2 minutes to finaly get to the hook was almost torture. His vocals didn't get any better by the end sounded almost forced.

forced? heartfelt you mean? heartfelt...

and about straw, they did release another album after 'shoplifting', the first single got quite a bit of play but i didn't think much of their new stuff... shame as i really like shoplifting.
