Has anybody noticed this? All the new music I listen to seems to be of the very subdued, maybe singer-songwriter, slightly country-ish ilk.
Records I've been listening to recently:
Damien Rice - 'O' (just got this, seems very good)
Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker
Grant Lee Phillips - Mobilize
Ella Guru - Three Songs From Liverpool
Neil Young - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, and Harvest
Also add to the equation the new Nick Drake compilation in the summer (with newly discovered song), and the rise of jazz-lite such as Norah Jones et al (not necessarily a good thing).
Even The Man is getting in on the act (cf. Coastline?)...
I've not completely eschewed The Rock, but my current leanings are in this direction. Any one else?

Still nothing more exciting than a great loud song but yep I also have turned to lots of quiet stuff recently. Damien Rice is good, I think TomMcRae is good (no one else agrees), Come Pick Me Up on Heartbraker is one of my current favorite songs, Josh Rouse's Under Cold Blue Stars is amazing realy, Grandaddy, My Morning Jacket (they're kind of quiet) and Young's Harvest and After The Goldrush are absolute classics. SMOG! Also quiet and I'm obsessed by Knock,Knock,Knock. I'm going to watch out for Grant Lee Phillips because I loved the first Grant Lee Buffalo album.
I love the quiet stuff.

An unusually intellectual interjection from this man...
I had a quick listen to the new Grant Lee Phillips album a while back, before I'd heard Mobilize, and it sounds good. If you haven't heard Mobilize, I'd definitely recommend it, the songs are simply amazing and Phillips' voice is gorgeous.
Heartbreaker is definitely a fantastic album as well - I didn't want to like Ryan Adams (and to be fair I've not listened to a lot of his other stuff), but this album is great.
Course, the other sign is the resurgence over the last few years of Johnny Cash's quiet side - thats some seriously powerful music.

Just kidding, I appreciate good music, wether it be heavy or mellow. That said I would choose electric over acoustic any day. As long as a band has a good pop sensibility, that is my only demand.

The list of different sorts of cheese I like :
- Camembert (Président)
- Roquefort (all sorts of roquefort)
- Chèvre (Chavrou)
- Pyrénéen
I still eat Edam, but my current leanings are in this direction. Anyone else?
In the next episode, I will tell you which orange juice I'm currently drinking.

Currently I'm drinking Tropicana Multivitamines. I just love the vitamines. It's healthy. Not as healthy as the Irish pubs where you're not allowed to smoke, but very healthy though.

On the other hand, if you really want to pursue your explorations of the quiet and introspective, and if you haven't heard that one yet, I can't recommend Kristin Hersh's 2003 album The Grotto strongly enough.

I was listening to Drake the other day....I'm not really a fan, but a friend was playing it-I like 'Poor Boy' and 'The Time Of No Reply'. Hav'nt heard Lee Phillips solo stuff-Grant Lee Buffallo had some great songs. 'Everybody Knows' is a classic N.Young.

I pretty much stay in an eclectic mood all the time. On the quiet side I've been enjoying the new album by Zero 7, and also Gorky's Zygotic Mynci get a regular play.
I'm just as inclined to listen to Tomahawk, Slayer or Killing Joke though.

I prefer English. Not very adventurous when it comes to cheese I'm afraid. The foreign ones I have tried, I have not liked. I do like the look of Brie though.

The Leonard Cohen song? Covered for the SHREK soundtrack? Well I don't know if he's done that but it sounds like an awful idea. Of course many greats have covered Hallelujah. But for Shrek!!! I'm stumped. Go listen to two Rufus Wainwright songs: Poses and Go Or Go Ahead, that should make up for it.
Like A Forest from the Low album is an incredible song. I've only got Things We Lost In The Fire though, anything else I should check out?

Passion and soul don't necessarily increase with loudness, though. There are plenty of loud, noisy bands that don't seem to have much passion for what they're doing.

Secret Name is another good Low album, in a similar vein but different enough to make it worth getting. If you like Low you might like Ella Guru, who I've been recommending left right and centre. Very quiet and subtle, but with a country-ish tinge.

WOAH! No I think you misunderstand me. I am refering to particular bands. Chillout bands, not all chilled-out bands. You know stuff like Zero7 or Aqualung. I just don't see how people can write music like this and think "Yeah I said everything I wanted to say with that record". And I don't just mean saying what you want to say through lyrics, but music as well. It's like all they had to say was "Zzzzzzzzzzzzz".
I just don't see the passion in this music. Their are loads of other bands like this but I don't pay attention to their names/don't find out their names.
You can pretty much pigeon-hole most of the people who listen to this kind of music. Like I said, music for the Ikea generation.

They're conveying moods rather than conveying emotion or meaning. It's a good new outlet for music. I really dig Air...a guy at work told me about Zero 7 (he generally has questionable taste in music but I enjoyed the bit I heard). Grandaddy I suppose could be lumped into this category...with some of their music.

aren't moods emotion? i don't really see the difference here. i don't really think it's new either.
Grandaddy and AIR are definitely on the more "mellow" side, but i would never insult them by comparing them to Dido or David Grey.
AIR is one of my new favorite bands. Grandaddy fucking rocks (in addition to being very atmospheric and spacey). |

| Jim Guthrie's "Now, More Than Ever" is a really beautiful record in this vain. My second best pick of 2004, behind Franz Ferdinand. Where you are Jo, I love this record (FF), so phooey on you! But seriously, I recommend all you kids check out Jim Guthrie. |

yes i got the cd last week.
i have only managed to listen to it a couple of times cause busy with ATP, but i was impressed with it, and i will definitely listen to it many times further.
i've also been busy listening to the new Blonde Redhead cd, and the newest Neko Case one, which interestingly, will both fit very snuggly into this thread.
The Blonde redhead cd is absolutely brilliant, and i think it'll be very tricky for any cd to beat it for the record of the year imo.
also, worth a mention to Cat Power - very melancholic, and fantastic.
am actually off to see her live tonight....hopefully she'll put on a good show.....her one at ATP was ruined by a very annoyingly chatty audience.
