Lot's of Kurt Cobain stuff in the press at the moment, been reading some of it, mainly to see if there's any mentions of the pixies... none so far. the times have a 2 page feature on him and how much nirvana influenced music, thought it was a bit odd, although hardly surprising, that there was no mention really of who in turn influenced nirvana, or paved the path... then just been looking on nme.com (yeah, i'm really bored, give me a break) and they're giving away a CD called "Kurt's Choice" which features songs that influenced Kurt... Again no Pixies tune... Although it could be to do with licensing, I don't know. Would have been great to have a tune on there though, would have introduced a lot of new people (who keep hearing this name the pixies thrown about but don't know who they are) to their music... The listing (in case you were interested) is:

Mudhoney - 'Touch Me I'm Sick'
Rites Of Spring - 'For Want Of'
Faith - 'Subject To Change'
Iggy Pop - 'Louie Louie / Hang On Sloopy'
The Melvins - 'Gluey Porch Treatments'
The Butthole Surfers - 'Sweat Loaf'
MDC - 'John Wayne Was A Nazi'
Gang Of Four - 'At Home He's A Tourist'
The Slits - 'Typical Girls'
PJ Harvey - 'Dress'
The Vaselines - 'Molly's Lips'
Leadbelly - 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night'
Bad Brains - 'Banned In DC'

Yeah it could have been licensing or it may just be the fact that they tried to stay away from the influences that everyone knew about anyway. I think everyone knows he was influenced by the Pixies, The Beatles, Black Flag etc. And everytime NME mention Nirvana, they invariably mention the Pixies, and vica versa.

Looking forward to that CD on Wednesday.

Yeah I know but not as much as those three I don't think. But hey you are probably right about the licensing. It certainly won't be because they don't like those bands or 'cos they don't think they influenced him.

yeah, theres lots of bands/artists that influenced him, they don't mention the knack, they don't mention david bowie, they don't mention bikini kill... i mean, most of nevermind was written about tobi vail... (sp?)

i think what said it all was i was playing the intro to lounge act, and my friend was on the phone, and she asked me if it was a pixies song.

This listing is very stupid. Didn't Kurt regularly quote the Pixies and Joy Division?

Been listening to the Femmes album "Why Do Birds Sing?" nonstop in my car the last few days. There's some great songs on there, though supposedly it's not one of their better records song-for-song. American Music and the cover of Do You Really Want to Hurt Me? are among the best songs I've ever heard.

This is what we are discussung Adnan. We suspect it might be because of licensing.

They did not leave them off because they didn't think they influenced Kurt. They are well aware they did. There is more to it that we don't know about.

There isn't anything about Kurt in it. It's this week's issue that is a Kurt special. The Pixies did get a mention in NME in the issue before last. They were introducing the bands that would be playing the festivals this summer and they basically said how their would have been no Nirvana without the Pixies and that they are one of the greatest three bands ever. To be fair to NME, they do love the Pixies. They voted Doolittle the second best album ever last year.

The CD is OK. The original Leadbelly version of 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night' is interesting. Not as good but certainly worth having. I think the original 'Molly's Lips' by The Vaselines is my favourite though. Especially the old car horn part. I think I might try and get hold of one of their albums. Kurt also covered their 'Son Of A Gun' and 'Jesus Don't Want Me For A Sumbeam'. All great songs so they should be worth a listen.

I bought the Uncut special this month. It's all about Kurt and Nirvana and has a 'never been seen before' interview with him. He talks about where he wanted to go with his music in the future. I haven't read it yet but it looks interesting.

That old black man kicks my ass! Hell, you've got to remember that it was recorded before 1950...in prison. Leadbelly rocks.

Erm excuse me, I didn't say it wasn't good. I said it's not as good as Nirvana's version.

I never said you said it wasn't good. I honestly think that the original is better. I love his voice. And the guitar playing is a lot different, almost happy. Interesting how your opinion is the world-standard.

Yes, the smiley was after: And "i'd rather be dead than cool". Which is from "Stay Away", and since this topic is about Kurt Cobain the "" was for your clever little reference.

In fact, I'm quite positive that's what it was originally intended for but when I took offense to your post you "changed" what it was there for to make me look like an idiot.

Oh dear. How you suddenly act your age. You couldn't be more wrong and couldn't have jumped further to a conclusion.

You are the first person to have fallen out with me Crouton and it's a shame 'cos it's a very hard thing to do. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised though as I've seen you snap at people on here before for no justified reason. You clearly need to go away and grow up before you come back on here.

I'm surprised Tad wasn't in there.

Its kinda cool that alot of these bands passed through local bars here as we're not too too far from Seattle. Its strange to think that Nirvana was almost booed offstage here...

Recommended. And easy enough to do since they only have the one. 'Rory Rides Me Raw' is the coolest song about a bicycle seat ever. Prove me wrong.

I also bought the NME just for the CD, i still felt bad giving my money to such a shit rag, it'll only encourage them.

the CD was good but alot of omissions i felt, what about the Pixies, Breeders, Sonic Youth, Sebadoh, Beat Happening etc.

Still, shouldn't moan, at least PJ Harvey was on there. Does anyone else think she is just a complete Godess?

Just wondering what music publications people usuaully read?

I still find NME the best 'cos they keep abreast of things. Q respect acts such as Dido so they can definitely fuck off and MOJO is for old men. Talk about 'Dad Rock'.

I know NME tend to hype things up too much but I just ignore that and make up my own opinions. Have to say though that they have introduced me to a lot of great bands.

If anyone has any other mags that keep with the times then I'd love to try them out.
