Just watched it again a couple of nights ago. Very disturbing, but still very good. Me so horny for it. I love it long time. You like it?

I like that movie quite a bit. Yeah, it is quite disturbing, especially when the drill seargent gets shot in the bathroom.
Vietnam-era probably have to say my favorite movie is "We Were Soldiers" followed by "Full Metal Jacket". I really liked "Black Hawk Down." There needs to be a new World War I movie. I think overall my favorite war movie of any time period is probably "Saving Private Ryan."

Take me, break me, tell me a good one and maybe I'll cry

I liked the first half of this film, with Vincent D'Onofrio, but the second part (i.e. in Vietnam) didn't do much for me.
Favourite war movie would be Apocalypse Now, just for the sheer insanity. And the horror, the horror.

Maybe it qualifies as the greatest "boot camp movie". I enjoyed the first half but thought the Vietnam scenes were a little half-baked. I definitely don't agree it comes close to being the best war movie, or even Kubrick's best war movie (which would be Paths of Glory).

The 1930 version of All Quiet on the Western Front gets my nod for greatest war film. I've probably seen it seven or eight times and my hair still stands on end through half of it. Paths is a close second.

Yeah Iīd go for Paths of Glory too, but if Strangelove can be counted then thatīs mine. I donīt think Full Metal jacketīs second half quite matches the first, and the Vietnam-by-way-of-grey-London-Docklands is pretty lame. Other than those two, The Big Red One, MASH and Three Kings tight up until the ending. Not really sure about Spielberg, I find his films creepy and manipulative.

I'm with Cheeseman on Apocalypse being a great war movie. Deer Hunter is another very good one. Full Metal Jacket was good, whether it is his best is a matter of taste. I liked Thin Red Line also. I have to say though that war movies are mostly not my kind of thing.

Cool topic, this is. Here's all the war flix in my humble collection, in order of preference, although there are some close races...

Apocalypse Now
Paths of Glory
Dr. Strangelove
Band of Brothers
Full Metal Jacket
Saving Private Ryan
The Deer Hunter
Das Boot
Lawrence of Arabia
Patton
Casualties of War
Braveheart
Coming Home
The Great Escape
A Midnight Clear

The nice thing about Kubrick movies (not just the war movies) is that there's so much being communicated on so many levels that they really bear repeated viewings. There's a good example in FMJ (which I may have already posted here long ago but I'll do it again).

Near the end, when the boys isolate the sniper, she asks them to shoot her but only Joker is willing to do it. It's both vengance (for Cowboy, Doc and Eight-Ball) and mercy (for the poor girl) and the way Kubrick shows this is what I've called the "Eclipsing Peace Symbol" shot. As Joker readies himself to shoot the girl, take note of the peace symbol on his body armor. As he gets closer and closer to pulling the trigger, the camera angle makes the peace symbol disappear. After he shoots, the peace symbol comes back but only halfway.

This is the kind of stuff that made Kubrick maddening to work for (imagine how many takes he made Modine do of this scene before he got it right) but clearly, the man had some filmmaking skills.

Full metal Jacket is one of the only war movies I enjoyed. Saving Private Ryan is absolute bunk and Apocalypse Now scored no points with me for mutilating "Heart of Darkness."

Yeah, I'd agree with holidaysong, Kubrick's best film certainly isn't FMJ, you couldn't possibly say that when he has Strangelove, The Shining, Clockwork Orange, or 2001 in the bag.

Don't forget Paths of Glory, Lolita, The Killing, Spartacus... crap, when you list them all out, FMJ is probably only better than Killer's Kiss, Barry Lyndon, and Eye Wide Shut.

I love Apocolypse Now, too. Excellent, excellent movie. I think Martin Sheen does an excellent job in it. I think I should mention Platoon, too, since no one else has. I think it was pretty good, not great, but pretty good. The Shining is fucking brilliant. Clockwork Orange always manages to get me, too...but you definitely have to read the book before you can really understand the movie (I just found that out last year...wow did it ever change for me!)

I agree that the first half of Full Metal Jacket is stronger than the second half. Everyone seems to feel this way. But I still like the second half. The sniper scene is pretty cool. I just feel like the movie could have gone so much further than it did. It actually seems rather short for a war film, and for a Kubrick movie.

I have to admit that I like Casualties of War quite a bit. It was different from any other Vietnam film I'd ever seen. It seems to be one of the lesser respected Vietnam films, but I thought it was up there with the best of them. Then again, I'm a big DePalma fan, so that could play a large role in my admiration for the film.

Possibly an unpopular opinion but I really like Eyes Wide Shut. The most common complaint from my friends was that it was deathly slow, but I went to see it right before starting a nightshift during college so I was glad of the time stretching out.

Cvanepps, a friend of mine worked in the design dept of 2001 and said as far as he saw, Kubrick did multiple takes of everything from every possible angle and then let the editors sort all the mess out, which didn't exactly endear him to them. When I told my friend I was having trouble reconciling facets of Kubricks films like humanistic propeace messages with a quite cold, mechanistic worldview, he said 'Kubrick was anything but human'.
Cheers,
Owen

My favourite war films are Platoon, Zulu and Black Hawk Down (probably my favourite). I also really liked Enemy At The Gate. Snipers are cool. Except ones in Washington.

R. Lee Emrey, who plays the drill instructor was one for real. He's in some other movies...as the police chief in Se7en(he was originally to play the John Doe role), and I think he's in the 'Chainsaw remake, whwich I have not seen yet. But he's definitely been in several other pictures.

R. Lee Ermey filmography:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000388/

Funny, he played a helicopter pilot in Apocalypse Now...

I, for one, love FMJ... In fact, I just bought the DVD (as a part of a Kubrick box set which also includes Lolita, Orange, 2001, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, and Eyes Wide Shut).

Agreed, the first part is memorable, and not only because of R. Lee Ermey and his colourful rebukes... But I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the second part.
Joker being filmed for Army propaganda ("I wanted to meet interesting and stimulating people of an ancient culture, and kill them"), or the boys singing the Mickey Mouse song are definite highlights for me.

As for "Vietnam by way of grey London docklands"... well, I've never been to Vietnam, so I couldn't tell you how it's supposed to look, but it could be noted that Kubrick wasn't too interested in realism. In a "making of" documentary about The Shining, Nicholson talks about working with Kubrick, whom he quotes saying, "It may be real, but it's not *interesting*"...

I agree with Chris, Kubrick may have been a machine (see how he treated Whatsherface, erm, Olive, on The Shining), but he knew what he was doing.

Oh yeah, it's Ermey, not Emrey. I remember that Naked Gun 331/3 cameo....yeah, Black Hawk Down is a really annoying movie. It takes a real situation and turns it into a kind of tv commercial. Saving Private Ryan gets my back up a bit too.

"Black Hawk Down" didn't do anything for me either way...

I feel pretty much the same about "Saving Private Ryan", although I must say that I've fallen in love with the "Band of Brothers" mini-series - I've bought the DVD set and have already watched it again twice... although you could say it "takes a real situation and turns it into a kind of TV commercial", but that's what all TV is about anyway... and, right or wrong, it just works for me in this case.
