My top three (in no particular order) were:

Goonies
The Sandlot
Spaceballs

I was obsessed with those movies. I think I'll have to go on a couch-potato binge and watch them all tonight. What were yours?

Oh! I really like this topic!

I watched these tapes incessantly on the BetaMax in my Uncle and Aunt's basement, from around ages 2 to 7 or 8:

The Hobbit (animated 70s version)
Watership Down (animated)
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe (anim. 70s version, again)
The Dark Crystal

If we are talking older, I have no idea... too many to remember at the moment. I loved Goonies and Spaceballs, but those came out when I was much older.

Edward Scissor Hands
Pee Wee's Big Adventure
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies (turtles in a half-shell, turtle power!!)

yeah, Watership Down. That was like a horror film for kids, it used to scare me no end.
I used to live not far from where the book was set (near Newbury, Berks, fact fans).
I used to like the whole Disney thing as well, I'm sorry. Lion King, Aladdin, Toy Story. These were great films.

Yeah I liked Dark Crystal too. Watership down made me cry. As did E.T. Then again I guess you weren't a normal child if they didn't make you cry.

Other faves were:

Teen Wolf
Back To The Future
Star Wars Trilogy
Airplane I & II
Police Academy
Krull
Jason & The Argonauts
All the Sinbad movies
King Kong
Jaws
All old westerns
All Bond films
All dinosaur movies
All Shirley Temple films
All Laural & Hardy films
All Harold Lloyd films
Smokey And The Bandit
Cannonball Run
War Games
Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
Big
Goonies
Monster Squad
BMX Bandits

Right I'm off to bed now but I'll try and think of some more for tomorrow.

E.T. scares the living shit out of me. My parents rented it one time because my mom wanted to watch it and they had to drag me and hold me down to watch it. I couldn't stop crying. I still can't look at that thing without getting chills. It just creeps me out.

My friend Will calls my mom "Diablo" to her face all the time. It cracks me up everytime. Even when she invites him to eat and even serves him food, that's just funny to me. But he's a prick. lol

You know what I have stuck in my head right now, the film score to Edward Scissor Hand. At the end where Wynonna is talking to her grand daughter how it never snowed until he came along. The music going on when Edward is carving the ice and it goes thru the window and all over the yard to the houses at the bottom of the hill where he dwells. That always gets me a bit emotional, it gives me goose bumps.

Man, there are so many...top 5 that I can think of would probably be:

Grease (story goes that I watched it several times a day. My imaginary friends were named Sandy and Danny)
The Neverending Story (very dark and creepy movie, probably damaged me)
Goonies (timeless)
Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (love it)
A Christmas Story (best Christmas movie ever, still watch it every year)

I loved Sandlot too...although that was more adolecense I guess. Great great movie.

"Searching for Bobby Fisher" one of the best movies ever.
plus:
"Emmet Otters Jugband Christmas"
"The Worst Witch" with Tim Curry and Mrs. Garret from the Facts of Life.
"The Tale of the Bunny Picnic"
"The Last Unicorn"
"Dot and the Kangeroo"
"Dot and the Kangeroo 2: Electric Boogaloo"

"Watership Down" was good but kind of creepy.

I remember being mightily impressed by the original 'King Kong' and those old 'Tarzan' movies, when I saw them on television as a wee kid... (Well I think I did...)

And of course 'Raiders of the Lost Ark', which we went to see at the cinema (I must have been around 10), I remember we missed the beginning (my parents have never been very good at being on time).

I was 12 when 'E.T.' was released, so I guess it still counts as a childhood movie. To this day, I remember vividly the strong impression the trailer made on me, as I saw it in a theatre, before some other, long forgotten movie.

To me the 'E.T.' trailer remains a brilliant example of what a trailer should be. It's perfect because it suggests and doesn't show anything. One of the best ever, with that long, jokey one Hitchcock made for 'Psycho'. And here I am veering off-topic :/

Good topic.

I was born in 1967 man, so grew up in an era without video machines. After constant pestering Ma and Pa finally bought one in about 1983/4 and wisely chose a betamax machine the size of a small wardrobe. I think we had a separate generator to power it.

Therefore my childhood movie memories are limited to cinema going only. Pretty good memories though! I guess I was lucky because these were the highlights:

Close Encounters 77
Star Wars 77
Grease 78
Superman 78
The Black Hole 79
Star Trek 79
Airplane! 80
Blues Brothers 80
Flash Gordon 80
Empire strikes back 80
Raiders of the Lost Ark 81
Escape from New York 81
Poltergeist 82
Blade Runner 82
Tron 82

I must have seen Jaws at some point although I doubt it was in 1976 (too young at 9). Also saw Alien in about 1981 at a school film club showing - probably one of my strongest memories. I was petrified. I avoided ET and watched it for the first time last month!!

I remember queueing round the block to see Star Wars. About as exciting as it gets when you are a 10 year old.

Is "the Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe" a famous novel or movie in the USA? That's crazy, I have this rememberance of a movie I saw when I was young, about a lion, a witch and guess what... a wardrobe. And for 20 years I couldn't figure out which movie that was, until today. The weird part is that imdb.com says it was released in '88, which means I was 11 at the time, and it doesn't fit with what I recall. Is there a scene in which the lion is lying half-dead on some sort of huge stone?

OK, now my fave childhood movies:
The Dark Crystal
My Name is Nobody (this movie is awesome)
The 12 Tasks of Asterix (the animated Asterix movies aren't great, but this one is really good)

i remember seeing this when i was about 6 or 7 for some reason and i ended up having nightmares about killer bees for many many years.
this movie produced the only nightmares i have ever had.

they always involved me riding my motorbike in a paddock on our farm and getting chased by the bees.

i then went and got it out last year to watch again and was flabbergasted that i could have gotten scared by such a crappy movie.
it was atrocious.
i was really disappointed actually...i wanted the nightmares to have been caused by something genuienly scary.

Aw sorry Denis, you're right it is a good film. I just lumped it together with the hundreds of crummy horror flicks which I saw as a kid. Phantasm is also a cult classic and Piranha was scripted by John Sayles (yeah I checked on IMDB, THE John Sayles). The Shining also was one of those classic horror pics I saw at the time. We had to watch these film at friend's houses when no adults were around because they all had 18 restrictions. The films were on Betamax so it could easily be hidden underneath ones T-Shirt.
