(don't take this too seriously)
but isn't the intro chord progression to ('I wanna live on an) abstract plan' the same as the chord progression on the chorus of 'on a plain' by nirvana? tabs were conflicting, but i think abstract plain is c#-f#-e and on a plain is d-g-f (the f might be a# which bollocks my theory up)
And i know, what's a chord progression? But the similarity of the titles..... omg, frank was blatantly listening to nevermind the day he wrote his song

Smells Like Teen Spirit was intended to be, and has been proclaimed by all members of Nirvana, a direct rip off of the Pixies.

Fairly common progression, there are prolly dozens of tunes with a similar progression.

I've always thought there were similarities between "Los Angeles" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" but Dave Noisy's point definitely applies there as well. |

I always thought it was Debaser Kurt was "inspired" by. Seems to be more simularites there. |

i've already stated this, but don't you see.. the word "plain." it cnanot be a coincidence!
and by the way, gouge away and smells like teen spirit do not sound the same, but for some reason it has become the cool thing to say. i can see similariy in the dynamics, but why is it gouge away in particular that is compared to teen spirit?

Because Kurt himself said that he was trying to rip-off Gouge Away. And yes, actually, it is almost exactly the same. Look at the notes Joey plays right before the chorus in Gouge Away...okay? Now: Listen to the notes during the verses of Smells Like Teen Spirit. Same notes, just a couple of octaves higher.

The real theft is Bob Mould's "Good Idea." It is Debaser with different lyrics. |

Maybe I'm just as blind as a bat, but Ive never listened to Abstract Plain, Gouge Away, Debaser or LA and thought that either Frank or Kurt ripped off each other.

I don't think he ever said exactly "Gouge Away." I never heard that. He did say "Pixies" though. I always thought Gouge Away was the most similar, though. It was released in 89 so it's quite possible.

indeed. but he does quite openly admit, or call it, his tribute to the pixies... but yes, almost identical!

Compare the chords in the chorus and intro/outro of Pie In The Sky to the choruses of Territorial Pissings and Stay Away.
Smells Like Teen Spirit takes rhythmic elements and its first two chords from Debaser, while also scrambling the chord progression (transposed from G# to F) and adopting the extreme dynamics of Gouge Away. |

Interesting. Seems to me that Smells Like Teen Spirit was a rip-off of U-Mass.

But wouldn't have SLTS been written before UMass came out (1991)? I know it was one of the first songs Frank wrote after meeting Joey, but I don't think Kurt was out in Amherst evesdropping. |

Kurt never said which Pixies song. He said "Pixies" as in, their whole style. It's not just one song.
Trompe Le Monde came out 4 months after Nevermind, despite the fact everyone likes to say Umass is a Teen Spirit ripoff.
Interesting that the year that gave us Umass and Teen Spirit, the public went with Teen Spirit...maybe if Frank had long blonde hair and was a bit thinner, it would have been different.

its pretty weird this came up today cos this morning i was walking along humming some frank song and then it morphed into some nirvana song. either my mind is receding or frank's been rippin' off kurt all these years! i'm hoping its the second one, for the sake of my sanity, cos i can always get a new favourite musician while new brains are pretty hard to come across if your not a tinman. |

Has no-one else noticed one of the main riffs from "Black Letter Day" is the E-G riff from "About A Girl"? I know it's probaly coincedence, but it really distracts me. |

I've never replied to this sort of topic before, but when I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit I viewed it as a more melodramatic Gigantic. Think about the hell-o and hey-paul comparison, and then the way the chorus sounds. |

Actually, I beleive I remeber seeing somewhere that kut did say gouge away - or maybe I am mistaken and This was a personal opinion from a writer on kurt....
I dont reallly want to have an arguement with you Jim about nirvana, as I feel it could become quite heated - so lets avoid that...

In this order of things, I wanna explain something. My sister is a fucking Nirvana fan and have tried to introduce me. I'm a Pixies fan and I'm still trying to introduce her. Both have failed. And here goes my explanation: I'm a little depresive guy and, sincerely, when I hear Nirvana I want to suicide immediately. They are so depressing. Pixies, however, are like a praise for LIFE. On the other hand, my sister thinks the Pixies are good, but soft. She is an enthusiastic girl. Do you think it's a fine explanation about likes and dislikes of this two brilliant bands? |

Surely you mean a scarecrow?
As for the depression issue, I agree that the Pixies generally seem to be an upbeat, light-hearted band, in sharp contrast to the angst of the grunge movement that they are sometimes credited with starting. (That's not to say ALL Pixies song are upbeat, or ALL grunge songs angsty and depressing, just that I see that a significant difference between the general mood of the Pixies, and that of their imitators.)

Yeah, let's not. Our knowledge is probably about the same level. I think I would have remembered "Gouge Away" because I always searched for them to name the tune, I always wondered "What Pixies song is it a ripoff of?" But I think they did just mention the Pixies sound, the loud chorus and soft verse.

Itchload - I believe Trompe le Monde came out three weeks after Nevermind. At least that's what allmusic.com says.
GavinCleaver - Good call. The similarity pretty much ruins (for me) what is otherwise a very good song. |

That's funny you say that because whenever I hear that part of the song I think of some old Smithereens song. "Behind the Wall of Sleep" maybe? |

Haha...it sounds funny to hear that the same guy who wrote "The Marsist" and "Parry the Wind High, Low" be associated with a 'common' progression.

I've heard "Smells like teen spirit" is a direct ripoff of at least four Pixies songs. How can this be possible?
