Today's random song of the day is Brackish Boy.

What do you think of it?

lyrics
This man he was a Mexican, oh yeah
Adopted into Norwegian, oh yeah
Turned into American, oh yeah
But he felt a Mexican, oh yeah
Down Mexico way

He had to learn Spanish, oh yeah
He was a walking fish, oh yeah
He was feeling so brackish
Between Norwegian and English
He decided it was time to go
To find the people that he did not know

But the road to Mexico, oh yeah
They sure go fast but they should go slow, oh yeah
Its a dangerous roooooooaaad

By now you know that he was fucked
By now you know he had no luck
He was smashed head on by a giant truck
Down on Mexico way

I like the album version okay but I love it in accoustic shows. I have a recording of it and it's fabulous.

From http://members.cox.net/fbsi/ (thanks Two Reelers):

"I had this Norwegian dorm pal... This is a true story about his adopted brother from Mexico. Kind of a sad story, but you know, you need sad stories to have funny and ironic tales to tell." - Frank, Toronto 93.

This tune dates way back. The Pixies recorded a version of it for Trompe Le Monde but it didn't make the cut.

Yeah, I've heard about that. Is there anyway you can get your hands on it? It isn't included on any bootleg, is it?

It's okay. A nice goofy song that opens side 2 of the LP.

In 1996 the band played it with a punk rock kind of arrangement.

love it a lot. somehow archetypical early frank black, or more typical black francis-frank black transition era (whatever this means). especially i love the sounds of the trucks (vvvrooom..), made by the keyboards. once more it shows the superb influence of eric feldman.

This is a fun little song, even if it is about a rather tragic topic.

I wonder why Frank always talks bad about Mexico. Think about Brackish Boy, At the End Of The World... He's never said anything cool about Mexico. He seems to have the wrong opinion about this wonderful country.

i never used to like it, but like it a lot now, since hearing the pixies demo version (wish they'd kept the wailing joey guitar bits on the fb version), an acoustic version and a couple of rockier live versions, it's grown on me quite a bit...

What bootleg is the Pixies's version of this song on? I'm also wondering when they recorded it and what other Frank Black songs were originally done for the Pixies. I've read they did "Surf Epic" and have Frank's demo of "Hang On To Your Ego" that was apparently to see if he could work it out for the Pixies. Did the Pixies try "Ego" in the studio, and if so then when were that and "Surf Epic" attempted?

I don't think the Pixies version has ever been made available in its entirety. There is, however, a 20-second (or so) clip floating around on the internet, as well as live, full-band (though non-Pixies) versions.

I actually prefer my cover of Brackish Boy (on the FB tribute album) to the "self-titled" version, though, to be fair, the original is one of my least fave FB songs. Interesting story lyrically, but the music sounds kinda like a second-rate Crackity Jones. I'm sure it's great live, though.

I've actually only heard this song once. Normally when I put on the LP, I just get to side one, and then I'm lazy to clean the other side. Plus, I like to listen to Frank sparseley, so that there's still an opportunity to discover Frank. I remember not liking the song.

That's what one could call a blitz-song : short, speed, full of energy ...
The kind of jewels Pixies liked to play (Sufer Rosa ...).

Love this tune. Yep the little space noises are fun on the album, but the live versions with heavy tom-toms in between the two sets of chords is awesome. Because of the drums. And when Frank sings acapella "by now you know that he was fucked.." with the drum rolling over the top.....beautiful.

How simple is this tune, how todays bands wish they could write as good as this. And it's not even one of his better songs. Who's the Man!

I've got a great version from when the Catholics played Scotland in 01. Not the best sound quality but good enough and a great performance. What FBC said about the drums...so true.

I also love the album version and the duet version I heard from Slim's with Mr. Feldman.

My friend attended an economics college somewhere in the Netherlands, and she swears up and down there's a statue of Frank Black there with a plaque with the line "He decided it was time to go to find the people that he did not know." Can anybody back this up?

No way! Not this. Not mediocre. Not in this thread. No such word in the FB vocabulary.
