I am a Bowie fan but one of his most acclaimed albums, Low, just does not quite do it for me. I've bought the newly remastered cd version this week-end but still no fireworks. Am I just deaf?

Of the "Berlin" albums, I think I like Heroes just a bit more. I'm not sure which Bowie period you hold dearest, but I can see not warming to Low. It's more about the highlights for me than being a really strong album. "Speed of Life", "Always Crashing in the Same Car", and "A New Career in a New Town" make it all worthwhile.

I started out as a gung-ho glam era fan, and have sort of gravitated to the '76-'80 period of Bowie - at least that's what goes on whenever I want to hear him nowadays.

Incidentally I've long held that "A New Career..." must have been exactly what Frank had in mind when he did "Adventure and the Resolution"....

I think it was mentioned before , but Frank Black, I believe, most likely modelled the sound for his debut cd on Bowie's "low". I also got the 'remastered' version of the album and was a little disappointed with the sound......I have the Vinyl of it and the sound seems much better....as for the difference with 'Heroes', its a toss-up on the mood I am in....right now, I prefer LOW.

Ever read the Mondo 2000 interview with Frank around the time that the first album was released? He mentions the influence of Low on the first album.

P.S. it's just you; Low's one of the greatest albums ever committed to magnetic tape.

I'm a big Bowie fan too; until recently my fave album was Scary Monsters, followed by Heroes. But 6 months ago I bought Low and discovered Bowie could be even greater than I thought. It certainly is in my personal top 5 ever (which is at the moment FYI: 1) Trompe Le Monde, 2) Massive Attack - Blue Lines, 3) Transglobal Underground - Rejoice Rejoice, 4) Pastorius - Word Of Mouth, 5) Low).
Offerw, try listening to Low when waking up. Speed Of Life is the best song ever to wake up to.

OK Low has some very loyal fans. I've listened to it again last night. I'd say it starts of with a bang, Speed of life is awesome (I agree 100% with you Denis). Breaking glass and What in the world breaks the momentum (for me). Then two more classic songs and then Be my wife I'd skip. From then on the album is superb but then stops to soon....... Hey, I'm probably very wrong here but I wouldn't put it in my top 5 best albums ever. It might make top 50.

The version of 'Breaking Glass' on 'Stage' is fantastic.

God, I _LOVE_ Be My Wife. Perhaps my favorite Bowie song. Love that fuzzed out intro. I saw Bowie in Chi-town not too long ago (seeing him again in St. Louis soon, methinks), and he played Breaking Glass, New Career in a New Town, and of course, Sound + Vision. I went apeshit. Bowie's been damn consistent lately; his past two albums have been really good.
