The guitar part in Joy Division's "Leaders of Men" sounds VERY similar in both key and tone to one of the main riffs from Led Zeppelin's "Achilles Last Stand." Yeah, I know, extremely important to point out.
Now hows about we talk about songs sounding like other songs. I'll go with some I can think of:
Pavement's "Silent Kid" sounds like "Everyday" by Buddy Holly. Offspring's "Why Don't You Get A Job" sounds like "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" by The Beatles Sublime's "What I Got" sounds like "Lady Madonna" by The Beatles Creed's "Are You Ready?" sounds like "Vaseline" by Stone Temple Pilots Ultra Vivid Scene's "Special One" (featuring Kim Deal!) sounds like "September Gurls" by Big Star Butthole Surfer's "TV Star" sounds like "Hungry Heart" by Bruce Springsteen Shakira's "Underneath Your Clothes" sounds like "Eternal Flame" by The Bangles White Stripes "Fell In Love With a Girl" sounds like "Middle of the Road" by The Pretenders Ween's "Japanese Cowboy" has the same melody as "Chariots of Fire," which Ween became aware of and when performed live, the band segues into "Chariots" at the end of "Japanese Cowboy." Steve Millers Band's "Keep On Rockin' Me" has the same opening riff as "All Right Now" by Free Interpol's "Obstacle 1" starts off sounding like "By the Way" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and then begins to sound more like "Marquee Moon" by Television, and it keeps on feeling like the singer is going to start singing "Is She Weird?" by the Pixies throughout the song.
I should point out that one Joy Division guitar line sounding like a Zep song is nothing Joy Division should be ashamed of, because Zeppelin ripped off many artists much more blatantly and knowingly.
Plus, I don't have anything wrong with songs having a resemblance to another song. Pavement's "Silent Kid" is one of my favorite songs of theirs, and I dig "TV Star" by the Butthole Surfers. I like a number of the other songs mentioned above.
I should mention that "Fight Test" by the Flaming Lips sounds like Cat Stevens "Father to Son," but I haven't ever really heard "Father to Son," at least I'm not aware of having heard it, even though I played the chords to a verse of it a few weeks back while the guy I was performing with sang the words (and strummed his guitar). It was an open mic. Someone requested some Cat Stevens. My friend told me the chords to play, so I played 'em, he sang. I didn't notice the similarity to Fight Test then, but when I mentioned that I had never even heard that song before, people were like, "What, you've never heard Father to Son?" and I said, "Ahhhh, that's the one that supposedly sounds like Fight Test." It must be a good song, cuz the melody to Fight Test is awesome, one of my favorite Flaming Lips songs.

I think most of Ray Davies' songs sound like some other Ray Davies song.

They played Fight Test and Father & Son back-to-back on the radio the other day, and its uncanny. The other one is Are You Gonna Be My Girl by Jet, and some Diana Ross song that I can't remember the name of.

Californication : the intro sounds like "Hurt" from Johnny Cash.
I’m not sure what this could mean / I don’t think you’re what you seem / I do admit to myself / That if I hurt someone else / Then we’d never see just what we’re meant to be |

Yeah, that Jet song sounds a lot like Iggy's "Lust For Life".
I've been listening to Terror Twilight by Pavement, and there's a song on there (probably Platform Blues, not sure) that, for about ten seconds, sounds like that "same ol' song and dance" song by Aerosmith. |

But Trompe Le Monde and Nevermind came out at the exact same time.
Edit - Actually, I checked and Nevermind came out a few weeks before Trompe Le Monde. Plus, I don't think the songs sound the same at all.

i think Flight Test intentinally sounds like Father & Son. it's a conscious homage, as opposed to a conscious or unconscious "rip off".. |

The White Stripes are hacks. They just don't seem genuine to me. But so many people love their music, so I guess there's something going on there. I just don't get it.

TarTar...I don't "get" their music, either. It's just nothing special at all, in my opinion. Same for the Strokes...they do absolutely nothing for me, other than annoy me..haha

Blur's 'MOR' = David Bowie's 'Boys Keep Swinging'
David Bowie's 'New Killer Star' (verses only) = Coffee & T.V
Some kind of weird symbiotic relationship?

If you give me some DJ equipment, I can turn "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana into "I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred. Seriously...right after that opening rift in "Teen Spirit", and the drums come in...it's a smooth transition.

"Brain Stew" by Green Day....sounds like "25 or 6 to 4" by Chicago, imo. I think they sound so much alike that the situation is comical. Ha.
"Breezin'" by George Benson reminds me of "Burndt Jam" by Weezer.

The Decemberists are one of my favorite bands, but there are a few songs of their's that remind me of old songs: "I Was Meant for the Stage" - Sting's "Fields of Gold" "Angel, Won't You Call Me?" - 3 Dog Night's "Shambala" "The Soldiering Life" - Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" "California One" - i can't put my finger on it, but it always reminds me of some particular old song. |

"Diamond sea" (Sonic Youth) sounds very much (both lyrics and music) like I'll be you mirror (Velvet Undeground)

Pearl Jam´s Given To Fly and Zeppelin´s Going to California. read a Guitar World interview with Jimmy Page and he was typically forthright about grumbling about it.
-- "You one of those right-wing nut outfits?" inquired the diplomatic Metzger. Fallopian twinkled. "They accuse us of being paranoids." "They?" inquired Metzger, twinkling also. "Us?" asked Oedipa.

Avril Lavigne's "Complicated," Hilary Duff's "So Yesterday," and Liz Phair's "Why Can't I?" all seem to be pretty much the same song. I'd say Liz's is the best, but that's probably just because she did a lot of other songs that were actually good.

if i kept track of this sort of thing i'd have an unabridged oxford english dictionary for you.
unfortunately i don't really remember very many i was gonna say the ween one but you beat me to it.
there's a whole lot of tmbg songs that have either obscure or not-so-obscure roots. and by roots i mean the song is almost a blatant rip but with the melody changed and/or totally different harmony. they do this on purpose and a lot of the times the original song is referrenced in some way. |

It think it sounds like "The Passenger" by Iggy Pop. I also think that BB's "Glass Slipper" sounds like "Brown Sugar" by The Rolling Stones. But then so do loads of other songs.
