Today's random song of the day is The Man Who Was Too Loud.
What do you think of it?
lyrics Though he loved to rock and roll All these many years He cared about the old peoples'' And little children''s ears
Though he was a guitar man He reflected and he vowed Never will I ever be No ne''er, ne''er again The man who was too loud
Johnny''s not a poor man No, he never gets him down Now that he is free he is not proud
He don''t need the power Just to make a sound He is not the man that he used to be Oh, no, the man who was too loud
I will play softly I will play softly I will play softly now ''Cause I was the man who was too loud
It''s not because he don''t respect The popular music style You know I saw him open up For the king of the surf guitar
Do not think he does not like The cheering of the crowd No, he is glad that they came to see The man who used to be The man who was too loud
Johnny is a rich man Yeah, he still gets around He is glad to be the cat who meowed
He don''t need the power Just to get his sound He is not the man that he used to be Oh no, the man who was too loud
I will play softly I will play softly I will play softly now ''Cause I was the man who was too loud I was way too loud
Though he loved to rock and roll (Aw, I better not)

love it! genius! and about another of my hero's too! jonathan richman! in fact i only discovered jonathan richman through this song, decided if frank made a song about him he must be pretty good, so got some of his stuff and i love him!
i've always thought the song was a bit about frank too, singing about how he was too loud too (back in the pixies days)... but i dunno...

It's weird...a song that I wrote and recorded not too long ago as a demo is on a site for review and someone said "Has a great Jonathan Richman feel to it!"..so I thought that was awesome, haha. I love this song. "I will play softly...I will play sooooftly..." hehehe

Hooray! The Song Oracle is back! I suppose the rumors of her death were greatly exaggerated.
Great song, by the way, even if I've only heard one song by Jonathan Richman, and an excellent ending for the Catholics' eponymous album. Since most alphabetization systems that I've seen tend to ignore articles like "a" and "the," making it last was a bit of a stretch as far as the alphabetical tracklist goes, but I'm willing to forgive it.

not the same sight as the one where you can actually review it..but a lot easier, haha.
Quite tongue in cheek, heh. I know it sucks, too! :)

it's cool that he also cites Dick Dale in that song
I love it...one of my faves, I would say

Love it, love it, LOVE IT.
Love McDave's "me-oooow" and when they all kick in after the "he don't need the power" line.
It's one of my top ten Frank songs right now.

favorite track on the album! at first i thought frank may be referring to himself until i was enlightened by the fbnet. so i went and bought a couple of jonathan richman albums and enjoy them very much. just saw school of rock (great flick!) and they were playing roadrunner in the background.

Love that song! I have recently discovered Jonathan Richman & the modern lovers and some of the solo stuff too, and it's just great, too!
PsychicTwin: I've always wondered if it really is Dick Dale he's 'talking' about in "You know I saw him open up For the king of the surf guitar"-line... but I guess it really must be. Heh, I saw Dick Dale play in town yesterday by the way. Really really great performance! |

"at first i thought frank may be referring to himself until i was enlightened by the fbnet":
I still think he's referring to himself as well as to Jonathan Richman. Like he's referring to himself AND John Denver in "Czar" (he didn't need no band, he was a mountain man, come on, just after the split, it's really obvious).
I’m not sure what this could mean / I don’t think you’re what you seem / I do admit to myself / That if I hurt someone else / Then we’d never see just what we’re meant to be |

There is only ONE King of the Surf Guitar! You're lucky....I'd love to catch Dick Dale live at some point. Actually, I'm surprised that I haven't yet...he seems to tour non-stop. |

I think this is one of FB's songs, but I prefer the version with Teenage Fan Club (I think theres an extra guitar in there). Never seen it live bu I would go mental if I did.

I like this song, but I prefer - by far - the '94 version with TFC.

I wondered about the Dick Dale reference. Yeah, that was my conclusion, too. I assumed the song was about Mr. Black, but the Jonathan Richman connection is fun. He's a weird, cool guy and it all makes sense now. |

I say it alot, but this time, this one is one of my all time faves. Put this in your top ten FB songs whoever did that thread.
I'd just be repeating what you guys have said, so all I can add is, I love the album version but have a lot more fun with the Teenage Fanclub attempt. Especially the pauses before the "..softly". Everything about this song is genius.
Is that a mistake in the playing when they change key, when Franks sings "Johnny is a rich man..."? Bout 2 mins 15 secs in. Can anyone hear it too? |

I don't understand the song exactly. i have heard some jonathon Richman songs and they were funny but drove me crazy after awhile. my girlfriend loves that guy though. did he used to play metal or something? cause when i heard him he was singing about dinasaurs. When exactly was he too loud and how loud was he? |

Excellent song. I like the Catholics version better though. One of the best album ending too. I can't tell you how many times I just played the last 3 songs of fb&tc. |
