high school, (class of '94), i fell madly in love with a girl in my class, an artist-type who was a huge pixies fan. she turned me on to them, i fell in love with both at the same time, the loves comingled.
we made out this one time, years later i still think of that PG-13 rated evening as far more meaningful than just about any sexual experience i've had since.
never really got anywhere else with her; have been drawn to artistic types ever since though. called her with the frequency of a stalker in high school, realized the error of my ways and have let her live her life in peace since then. ran into her once at a party, gave her a set of cds i'd made, with every song the pixies ever released, in alphabetical order.
haven't seen or talked to her in years, still i think of her time to time. she shows up in my dreams about once every six months. the last time she dropped in we talked like old friends, strolled and held hands. i woke up so happy.
i took it too far, came on too strong with her, spoiled it, now i have to stay away. but there's no law against being too much of a fan of a rock 'n roll band, so i can love them with all my heart forever.
i think i'm gonna name my daughter "Velouria Anne", play My Velouria soft & sweet at the side of her crib.
my tombstone will bear no name, no date, just "This Monkey's Gone To Heaven".

92 a friend of mine played Doolittle on a car ride. By the time it

Belonged to Columbia record club. In the late '80s, I'd order albums from bands that seemed interesting. Got a lotta crap, but also a lotta great stuff. Ordered Doolittle and have got all of BF and FB's stuff since and seen most of there tours.
Still don't understand why the Screaming Blue Messiahs didn't make it. though. They were my favorite band of that era.

Well, I was about 15 or 16...the year: 1993-94. I was listening to the radio, and debaser came on and so I liked what I heard, threw a tape in and taped the last minute of the song. I listened to what I had for about a week or so, then finally took my shitty walkman, and one minute of the song on tape to 3 record stores. The first two had no clue, but the last guy was like: "Hey ya thats the pixes" He directed me to their section, and thats when it all began.

Went to a party around '90 where the idea was for everyone to swap their worst album (that means vinyl). I ended up with Doolittle. Being terminally unhip I hadn't heard of the Pixies & knew nothing of what was in my hands. With no turntable to play it on the album got stuck somewhere in the back of a closet.

5 years later - I had read some liner notes by TMBG thanking Frank so I began purchasing Frank's solo CDs & soon after CDs by some earlier band he was in called The Pixies. WTF? I recognized the distinctive Doolittle album cover from many years ago - & while I listened to it for the first time I couldn't believe somebody thought this was a bad record. I was pleased to note that I hadn't been friends with said persons for several years.

Anyway - there are times when I wish I could "un-hear" FB & The Pixies just so I could relive that moment of discovery. Holy shit - that is divine.

i met this girl who played a version of Where is My Mind, and i thought damn, thats a cool song. So i went out and bought Surfer Rosa and then i read about Kim Deal and found the Breeders. it took me a while to listen to surfer rosa the whole way through, because there were some songs i couldn't sit through except where is my mind. now that's not even one of my favorite songs.

I read a review of Come On Pilgrim when it came out that said they sounded like a cross between Violent Femmes and Talking Heads.

I liked both bands so I had to give it a try - I got a copy (had to travel to Manchester to find one) and fell in love instantly.

And of course it sounded fuck all like a cross between Violent Femmes and Talking Heads!

Thankfully.

1989. I'd borrowed a cassette of The Wonder Stuff's "Eight Legged Groove Machine" from the local library, and liked it so much I bought their album "Hup".

A friend at school asked me for a copy, and said he'd lend me his new Pixies album "Doolittle". I was hooked from the start. Another friend got me a copy of Surfa Rosa from his sister. She taped it the wrong way round, side b before side a, and to this day, it still sounds wierd when I put the CD on and here it in the order it was supposed to be.

I never heard about Frank going solo until I saw an album in the record store by 'Frank Black'. I wasn't sure that it was the same person as Black Francis, but the 4AD label reinforced my suspicion, so I figured I'd buy it anyway and take the risk.

In junior high, my best friend's older brother had gone to high school with Kim. He was already hooked, and I became hooked roughly around the time of Doolittle. Odd seeing as how at the time, the only bands I really had any true interest in were Slayer, and Bad Brains.

When I was maybe twelve, I remember reading somewhere that one of Kurt Cobain's most influential bands were the Pixies. At the time I was listening to only Nirvana and needed something for a change. I went out and got myself a copy of Surfer Rosa and things have never been the same.

It was in 1993 or 94 there were a highschool group called "the happenings" playing pixies. That was it, i was hooked. Soon after bought Surfer Rosa. I think that it was the lack on info about them, who are they??
They never played them on the radio(Denmark), still dont.

A Dork in my HS physics class introduced them to me in 1988. By 91' I was in the Army stationed in Germany, and converted many of the punkers in my dorm to the sounds. I even donated a couple CDs to a local German Dance Club.

Now Black Letter Days and Pixies "Live" (swinging pig records) have a perm spot in CD changer. At least 1/2 of my ipod is Pixies and Black, with the other half mixed punk/alt from the late 80's early 90s.

Back in 99 I heard Velouria on this independent radio station in San Diego. I was only about 13 years old then but I got Death to the Pixies about a year later. I fell in love with their music and Kim Deal. Yes, scary but true. Luckily I met her after a Breeders show last year and had a great time. I wish I could find some of the pictures I took for I could post them here.

I think I have an excuse for not being into the Pixies first time around (I was 5 when COP came out...) However, I like to think I've made up for it since.
I guess it must have been about 1998, my best bud made a tape for me with Idlewild's first mini and first album. In the space left on the C90 he put, I think, Debaser, Wave Of Mutilation, Where Is My Mind? and Holiday Song. I eventually got round to buying Doolittle, but I'm ashamed to say that although i like it considerably, it kind of got forgotten after a while.
I started listening to Doolittle again, properly, in about 2001-ish, by which time I was at uni in London studying Sound Engineering. I bought SR/COP soon after (after seeing Fight Club), and was mildly scared by it. From there I progressed onto Bossanova then TLM, and by this time I was pretty much obsessed. I decided to write my dissertation on the Pixies, and in the name of research bought B-Sides, BBC and Purple tapes. Now I'm pretty much an obsessive fan. I managed to find Frank Black, Teenager, Catholics, Last Splash and Title TK in the Barbican Centre library, and (sorry Frank) ripped them onto my computer where they've found a comfortable home. I handed in my project recently and am awaiting my grade... It was great to do, I studied pretty much every song in depth, for example, ever spotted the similarities between the opening chord of Here Comes Your Man and that of A Hard Days Night? or Levitate me's guitar style and that of Dick Dale? Fascinating stuff.
So thats my Pixies story. Less instant love than most others, but gradually building up to the same point of obsession.

I HEARD ABOUT THEM ABOUT '92 0R '93 FROM COUNTLESS INTERVIEWS KURT COBAIN GAVE WHERE HE TALKED ABOUT HOW MUCH HIS SONGS WERE JUST RIPOFFS. I FIGURED 'HEY, I LOVE NIRVANA, LET'S CHECK OUT THE BAND THEY WISH THEY WERE'. SO I BOUGHT SURFER ROSA FOR LIKE $6.99 AT BEST BUY, AND HAVE LOVED THEM EVER SINCE....

Hi there,

Had the good fortune to hear Debaser blasting out of a friends hi-fi back in 1990. Fell in love instantly. Brought all the albums by the Pixies and looked for to some live shows. Went to Pixies at Crystal Palace, London and also a couple of gigs at Brixton Academy. The highlight being starting the set with Celia Ann, playing behind a black curtain. A simple silhoutte of the band jamming away was an awesome sight. Towards the end of the tune, the curtain dropped and straight into Rock Music. What a gig, seeing Joey go ape during Vamous is a sight to be seen. Consequently continued to follow Frank with his solo material and continued to see live whenever time permits. Dec 1st at Shep's Bush Empire London will be my 3rd Frank gig this year - what a year.

Bought my first pixies record last year. Saw FB live in 96, teenager copy was my intro. When I finally got enough cash last year I invested in all FB solo and pixies stuff. When I first heard pixies, back in 89 I was allergic to them. Now I rarely listen to anything else.. Pixies records must still be selling if this boards anthing to go by..

Round a mates house a good few years back,he had really cool hippy-ish parents with a vast collection of obscure cds, they put death to the pixies on and after half listening to a couple of songs i just dismissed them as another garage rock band, fast forward a few years and i was in hmv and saw pixies at the bbc for a bargain 5 pounds so i thought i'd give them another shot, and i've never looked back since....

Its crazy to think some people had found Frank Black first instead of Black Francis, It just blows my mind to think if I had ever found Frank Black instead of The Pixies. The way I found The Pixies kinda sounds lame but none the less worth hearing. I was about 12 or 11 and my brother and all his friends were a bunch of skater people, I too at the time was just begining to skate. We live on a farm so my brother and his friends all chipped in and bought a halfpipe to skate. Every Friday night we would go out to the halfpipe and skate tell 4 or 5am, It was very fun. Very nice. I always liked their taste in music and at the time they were listening to "Red Hot Chilli Peppers", Well later that year me and my brother were watching MTV's "jackass", And they had a guy wrapped in a cast. The song "Broken Face" was playing. So of course from no where my brother mentions that he has one of their CDs. We went out into his car and listened to it later. It was of course "Surfa Rosa" and "Come On Pilgrim" on the same CD. I loved it and he burnt it for me. Of course he thought the song "Where Is My Mind" was the best but of course I thought "Broken Face" was awsome, I had my brother burn me this CD and never stoped listening to it. Anyways another guy I skated with that was my brother's friend also listened to the pixies. His favorite CD of course was "Doolittle" and to be more specific his favorite song was "Monkey Gone To Heaven". He had the CD in his car and I got my brother to burn it for me. I liked it but with "Doolittle" my brother also burnt "Trompe Le Monde" witch sounded so bad compared to the other Pixie's CDs I had listened to. It took a little time but soon I loved Trompe Le Monde aswell. Over this summer my brother also burnt me "Bossonova" and "Dog In The Sand", I had been expecting just bossonva but his friend lent him all these disks and "Dog In The Sand" was also included. It was my first exposure to Frank Black. I hated it at first but after a few tracks turnt my head I grew to love it. I eventualy started purchasing all Frank Black's CDs and grew to love his music aswell.

Burning a bunch of cd's at my freinds house in Boulder. He kept trying to get me to burn all these crappy techno discs but I kept tearing through his jazz and other rocker shit. I came across DEATH TO THE PIXIES and I thought,"Boy someone must really fuckin' hate that band to put out a record with that title." My friend says,"Oh you don't want that; it's just some 'played out grunge stuff'." I told him,"With your taste in music it's probably anything but that." (It turned out to be his wifes' disc)And two years later that record led me to the mighty Frank Black catalogue of which I still have only heard half of. I still got four records of his I have'nt heard and it's nice to have four discs of certain pleasure on my horizon.

It was only two months ago. I was totally stoned in my living room at 2:00 a.m. looking at TV and I see those four kids (It was a 1989 Pixies gig) with their so-normal looks playing that awesome music.

I'd heard "Here comes your man" sometimes in the radio (Because it's a "soft" song) but it didn't like me so much. But when I heard this fat boy live with his "I have something against you!!!" shout I fell in love with Pixies.

first heard them the Pixies in 1996. i heard Wave of Mutilation (slow version) on the radio. Doolittle was the first CD i ever bought. was immediately obsessed with the entire album as i then adopted the Pixies as 'my band'. learned of frank's solo career in 1996 also (i bought Cult of Ray) but wasn't immediately impressed. finally in 1998, i started to really like Frank's solo work. my Doolittle CD, scratched as ever, still remains my most fav.

My brother started listening to them about 4 or 5 years ago and i really got into them, so he bought me death to the pixies for my birthday.
I loved this album with all my heart and lent it to a friend who subsequently lost it. I bought it again about a year ago and rediscovered how awesome they were.
Since then i have bought all their albums and i soon came to realise that they are the greatest band ever to walk on Gods green earth.
My friend recently found my original detah to the pixies and told me - 'it was were it should have been'.
