crap, i just wrote 2 or 3 paragraphs explaining and then posted it without my user name and password, forcing me to go back and LOSING IT. bah.

so, quickly, about a year ago i was listening to the radio, my older brother says this feeder song sounded a bit like pixies, i am interested, he tells me a bit about them, i buy death to the pixies, take it on holiday with me for 6 weeksand, it's the only cd i play (i was desperate to buy another of their cds but no music shops around..), came home, bought bossanova which i was a bit disappointed in, but then doolittle, surfer rosa/come on pilgrim, trompe le monde, b-sides and just recently at the BBC. awesome.

managed to get a few friends into them on the way too :D

In 1988...a good friend became OBSSESSED with PIXIES. This went on for 2 years. I HATED the PIXIES because of his chronic obssession. DOOLITTLE then came along in '89, and guess what my friend listened to every second of the day? I HATED HATED HATED it...but I couldn't understand why. Was it the zippy manic cracking music backed by a weird fat guy shreiking? Or the dorkiness of the other three members? Or the unsettlingly scary lyrics? Everything pointed towards the fact that I should have liked them...BUT WHAT WAS IT? I HATED IT! The following year (1991) saw college and new friends...one who was nuts for PIXIES! There was no escape from this band! This friend held me hostage in his darkened room and forced me to listen to TROMPE LE MONDE one creepy afternoon...needless to say we no longer speak.
Fast forward to 1998. While working in a used CD shop (college! ha!) I came across used copies of DOOLITTLE and BOSSANOVA in our inventory. For nostalgic reasons only (God only knows why) I decided to give them a spin. Within the afternoon, I realized that this band was as important to the rock of the nineties as the Beatles had been to pop of the 60's. The influence of PIXIES in EVERY group flooded me. And I realized their power 10 years after the fact. By the following day I had owned all 5 cd's, and finally understood the UFO that had come and whisked my friend away in 1988. FRANK BLACK soon followed, and there simply is no turning back. Some (it's seems most, actually) who are PIXIE-freaks dont like the FRANK BLACK of today...I like him just as much...complete 180 of PIXIES. So thats my PIXIES story...oh yeah...why did I use to hate them so much? I tend to hate everything at first...it's a terrible trait! But I now realize that stuff I hate I tend to love later on down the line. Maybe it's an esteem thing...I feel threatened by greatness I guess!

I was downloading a few Nada Surf songs a few years ago. I downloaded their cover of "Where is my mind" and was blown away by it. I did a search for the song and Pixies kept coming up; i had never heard of them. I went to a local record store and bought "Death to the Pixies." I went home and listened to both CD's. I went back to the record store the next morning and bought every Pixie cd i could get my hands on. I went home and listened to each one over and over again. I haven't stopped listening to them yet.

Actually there is no point buying Death to The Pixies if you get the single cd version...Best-ofs are just a waste of money if they haven't any new or unreleashed stuff, and the D.T.T.P disc1 is just a rip of , disc2 is what makes it worth buying....

i agree.. but it's because of that CD i got into the pixies.

i read somewhere, i think www.allmusic.com (best music site ever) that having the 'best of' tracks and the live together was actually pretty stupid. new fans will only want the 'best of' and probably not be interested in the live tracks (yet..). but old fans will be looking for the live tracks and certainly won't give a damn about the 'best of'. very true.

1992:First heard Dig For Fire in Singles, didn't even know who the band was at that time.

I heard the Breeders in 1993 w/Cannonball, became a fan of them. Didn't know who Kim Deal was at that time, but I thought they rocked!

2000: My first semester working at the college radio station, KTSW 89.9 in San Marcos, TX, heard Nada Surf's verison of "Where Is My Mind?" then I heard the first few notes of "Monkey Gone to Heaven" and it drew me. I heard the background vocals, which sounded familiar and cool and the bass line was AMAZING!! When I looked at the computer it said "The Pixies" and I immediately looked for any info. on the Pixies I could find to use the next time I went on the air. There I found out that Kim Deal was a bassist and that the back broke up in 1993. Later on, I bought Surfer Rosa and loved the album, but Bossanova is my favorite.

When I listened to Dig For Fire again, a few years ago, I was thinking, "where the hell did I hear this song b/c it sounded very familiar," low and behold, I rented the movie Singles last year, and there it was. In the scene where Debbie goes to the dating service, you can hear Dig For Fire in the b/g.

I am actually a Breeders/Pixies/Frank Black fan, but more of a Pixies' fan.:) I listen to them almost every single day.

peace, love and rock on,
nadia

Just kidding.

Someone played come on Pilgrim for me in the dorm. I was a big 4AD fan at the time, yet also liked punk rock such as the toy dolls and the fall. Instantly bacame a Pixies die-hard. Have or had every pixies album and i have every frank black solo also.

In 1989 i saw īem on Spanish TV (a video clip) playing Here Comes your man. I didnt pay too much attention, and I forget about them, but in 1991 I got a copy of Doolitle from a english workmate and everything changed. Suddenly there was all iīd been looking for; pop melodies, guitars, a bit of hardcore, in one word, PiXiEs !!

I'm a newer fan *blushes* around 2 years ago an internet friend of mine in England sent me a cassette tape of different artists she liked...Gigantic was on there and I didn't think much of it at the time until one day I thought I'd look into them a bit and heard Where is My Mind...and was totally blown away...and have been in love ever since...

The first song i heard of the Pixies was in the movie "Unbreakable" and it was "I've Been Tired". I bought Come on Pilgrim and was amazed. And i had always liked "Where is my Mind?" from the Fight Club credits, but i never knew what band it was by. When i did, i bought Surfer Rosa, and i loved it. I shortly bought the rest of thier albums, but hated Doolittle the first time i heard it, but it grew on me and now its one of my favorite albums. Trompe Le Monde is also very good, i think that was underrated. Now im completely hooked, but i didnt know who they were until 10 years after they broke up.:(

the production on doolittle takes some used to when i listen to it again. it's those drums, man! there's no sustain in the kit. but the songs are still some of their best.

I became a Pixies fan shortly after the Pixies tribute album Where is my Mind was released. The only reason I bought the album was because it featured my all time favorite band Weezer and other familiar names like The Get Up Kids and Eve6. Anyway, I found myself listening to the album every now and then, it was great! So I finally decided to purchase Death to the Pixies to get a scoop of what they REALLY sound like, I was dying of curiosity. I really digged their sound and about a year and a half later I bought Bossonova. I've been a fan ever since.

About 5 years ago my sister told me about a song called "Here Comes Your Man" by a group called the Pixies. I listened to the song and discarded the band as some kind of teen boppy stuff she listened to all the time. Last fall some friends were hanging out my house and one said, "Hey you know that song at the end of Fight Club? Where is My Mind?" and I told him no. So I downloaded and I was like shit this a good song. So I downloaded Here Comes Your Man and listened to it again and dug the sound this time. After a few weeks, I picked up Death to the Pixies. Since then I've probably listened to them every single day, own every one of their cd's, and try to get all my friends to listen to them.

Is that you, John Wayne? Is this me?

Dear friends:

i open this topic to know how people came to pixies or Franks's music and what did they think first when they listened to their first song.
In Spain we say: predicar con el ejemplo (Preach With Examples) so come on preachy preaches and do not molest me in the parking lot.
It was the late 80īs i lived in an apartment downtown Vigo(Northwest Spain) where all the action was in the city. i had no TV and I did not miss it, there were goopd radio stations and one night i started listening 2Monkey gone to heaven and heard only the name of the band Pixies, my english was good enought to understand
If man is 5 (x3)
Then the devil is 6 (x4)
And if the devil is six
Then god is 7 (x3)

This monkey's gone to heaven (x4)

Not only by the sound but I inmediatly remebered my brief knowledge of Numerology and tarot, my nickname is not casual, there were no correspondence with the tradicional concpets related to these nomber but the idea was very good, 5 is the high priest (I think this can be translated so, it is also my number, i was born july 5th and the sum of al numbers of this date is 23 ( lucky number for the italians also)
and 2+3=5 so you can notice how i identified with this song, 6 is teh number of love for books i have read and 7 is the number of perfection
so i knew this guy knew the same than i did and teh had played with this to find his own correspondeces, all this was before the song ended, I relized how wicked was the guy that composed this song. to resume
5- man- high priest
6-devil-love (and sin also)
7-god- perfection

hey Frank are you reading this? i come from a jesuit school, which is your religious background?
following frank all this years his a very gratifying experience, a man honest enough to record in two tracks, pou see his tour schedule and also humble to handle his own equipment sends a clear message:
this is not plastic music, I will be in Madrid october 30th, it ha been a long way, but worth to be walked.

saludos

sorry people i missed this topic, anyway frank and the pixies are the same stuff to me

My first introduction to the Pixies was at camp when I was a kid I had a counselor who would run around screaming

"This is a song about a superhero named Tony
It's called Tony's Theme"

and got me into screaming it too...

back in 1996 (i was only 8, yes i'm young) i was really into placebo, when their debut came out, and i got into nirvana because i read that placebo were influenced by them. then i read that both bands were influenced by the pixies, so i copied a tape of DTTP from one of my dad's friends who liked the band. they've been my favourite band ever since then, really, though the kind of music i generally like is totally different (i like hardcore and stuff) the pixies will probably always be my favourite band. the reason i liked them, back when i was 8, is mainly because when you're young, you have no concept of alternative or pop, or whatever, you just listen to wht sounds good to your ears, and now that i've been through a phase of listening to music/not listening to music because it's to poppy, or not hardcore enough or whatever, that's how i judge music now. oh, and one of my best friends loves the pixies too, so we always get into conversations about them, which is nice. 'cause it's good to share love of music with people who understand.

I first heard the pixies at the end of the cult movie 'Fight Club'

The scene at the end with the buildings falling down and "where is my mind?" playing was unbelievable. I eventually purchesed Doolittle and the rest of their albums and had the honor of recently seeing Frank Black and The Catholics at the State Theatre in St.Pete. Interstingly David Lovering was the opening act, although he didnt bring a band, he did some weird science stuff.

I first heard about the Pixies by reading that Kurt Cobain liked them, especially Surfer Rosa. For some reason, I didn't look them up at all. At this time, I was heavily into Nirvana. A while later, I bought a compilation called 'No Alternative' because it had a rare Nirvana song on it. I listened to the CD, and discovered the Breeders' 'Iris'. Loved that song, so went and bought Pod, then Last Splash, and eventually Title TK. Anyway, I read a bit more about the Breeders, and found out that Kim was also in the Pixies. I remembered reading about how great people thought Surfer Rosa was, so thought 'oh well i'll check it out'. when i heard it, i just thought 'fuck, this is amazing'. since then they've become my favourite band. :)

I was browsing a local indie store a few years ago with money burning my pocket and went around looking for stuff with nice covers to buy. I saw Surfer Rosa and thought that any band who puts a pair of tits on the front of their album must be good, and they were. Hurray.

I love the cover to Surfer Rosa. That was actually one of the later Pixies albums I bought...not year-wise, but in order.

My first experience with the Pixies was through my brother-in-law Robert. I was about 15 or so, and he was dating/living with my older sister Anna. He is about 5 or 6 years older than I, so he would've been around 20 or 21 at the time. He had alot of music that I had never heard of, and he had the advantage of having been more musically-inclined in the late eighties than I was, being older. The first Pixies I heard were two singles, one was "Dig for Fire," and the other was "Alec Eiffel" which contained an instrumental version of "Letters to Memphis" which FUCKING ROCKS!!! (Both versions.) I used to be really into making mixed tapes. (Nowadays I've graduated to burning mixed CD's.) I put both these songs on one of those tapes, although I didn't really like them a whole lot at the time.

Comic books were one of my other obsessions, and I got a letter printed in one. As a result, about a year later, I had about twenty people a week wanting to write to me to talk about Wolverine and the X-Men. One of them, who lived somewhat close to me, listened to the Smashing Pumpkins, who I was into at the time. He also listened to the Pixies, and made me a tape of Doolittle. After I listened to it, I gradually bought all of their other albums, and my obsession took seed. I just wish I could've lived at a time when I could've seen the Pixies in concert.
