it is curious that they're playing there when they can easily sell out almost any venue in LA. and they don't seem to be advertising either.. like when GBV played there (on the down low)

it could be... but i doubt they'd advertise it as the Breeders.

then again, maybe that's because of their Coachella contract, and it will be a secret Pixies show. or very special guest situation.

whatever happens, i'm excited. it's a win win situation. even if it's just a breeders show, it'll be fucking great. Spaceland is a tiny tiny club.

my money goes to just Breeders gig. but it's fun to speculate.

why would the breeders play 2 shows, at tiny tiny no-name venues SOOO close to right before the pixies are supposed to start their tour??

there's no way kim deal has time to be rehearsing with two band, eh?

and, according to http://www.frankblack.net/news/
"The Pixies have rehearsed and they will rehearse again in March in a secret location in Los Angeles."

it's got to be them!!!!!!

I AM SOOOOO JEALOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi. First post here, but I have prowled for a while. I'm conflicted here. If it's them I will travel. If not I don't want to get stuck with tickets that I can't get rid of. What do you guys think...

I'd put the odds at about 60% that this will be 'something more' than a Breeders show. But, there's obviously not going to be anything more than speculation before the fact; nobody's going to come out and credibly say, "yeah, it's the Pixies!". So: the Breeders rock. You should go see the Breeders. If you don't want to go see the Breeders, than don't.

I got my 2 for the Bay area show (bless you Sad Punk). A sneak peak show of the Pixies would certainly make up for my bad experience trying to get Davis tickets and if it's JUST a Breeders show in a good space then I'll be fine with that. By the time the Bay Area show happens, we'll know if it's really more of a Pixies show.

It does seem strange to use the Breeders name if it's really a full blown Pixies show. The Breeders are an alive band, and would seem insulting the members to use the name a sham. But, maybe I'm thinking too much. I'm amped. I wonder if with a few extra tickets I could score a Davis ticket.

Some speculation about the "mystery shows" in the Conta Costa Times (ignore the slagging on my home town)
http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/entertainment/music/qa_forum.htm

 Q.
Hey Tony. So, Mr. Frank Black is playing a mysterious solo show at the Independent in SF next week. He ain't on tour. In fact, he's in LA rehearsing with you-know-who. So, might this be a covert Pixies gig? Certainly beats driving to Davis... or the Great White North. What do you know, my friend? Inquiring minds wanna know, and all that jazz.
Harry Nguyen, Walnut Creek, CA 3/02/04
 A.
Yeah, around here we were kind of hoping for some relief from driving to Davis as well. So far, it's a mystery. Mucking things up even more is that the Breeders will be doing some dates before the Pixies' tour, including at least one stop at Slim's, I believe. Frank Black is always doing Bay Area solo shows, though since they're getting ready for a big tour, I'd give it 50-50 odds of a Pixies appearance. Let me see what I can find out.

I'm in. Haven't seen the Breeders since they last played Slim's. Plus, I've driven
by this place in Fairfax and it's a tiny bar. It'll be a great show regardless
of "special guests". I wonder if it will sell out as Frank's show in SF next week
still hadn't last time I looked and that is more likely a Pixies show than one
billed as the Breeders.

regardless of who it is, these shows are gonna be awesome!!!

it looks like venues that "the breeders" are playing are tiny dives (I can't believe they haven't sold out already!!)

the capacity for spaceland is only about 250!!!
http://www.digitalcity.com/losangeles/entertainment/venue.adp?vid=34396

I think that the spaceland show has the greatest chance of having "special guests" as the rest of the pixies are already going to be in los angeles.

and again, what's the point of doing a breeders show so close to the start of their tour??

and even if kim really did decide to to a mini-breeders tour, how come there hasn't been any sort of mini-promotion at all.

and why would they pick these dinky-rink places to play?? they could EASILY sell-out larger venues like they did 2 years back, especially now with all the newfound pixies hype.

the reason their booking these small places is because they've got a surprise. it's the cool rock star thing to do!!!

I don't think the solo frank black show at the independent is going to be anything other than that. as the article says, he's been known to do lots of solo stuff in the bay.

and again, the pixies are going to be getting together in march in LA. look at the offical news on www.frankblack.net

it's gonna happen, folks.

don't miss out!

what's the worst that could happen? you see a sick sick breeders show in a wicked intimate venue? I can think of worse ways to spend $20.

why would you be pissed if the pixies made an appearance???

that would be so totally AWESOME!!!

even if they only came out and played ONE song, it would TOTALLY BE WORTH IT!!!

don't be hatin', canadians. you've got more than your share of shows. it's only fair that we get the first re-appearance/song of the pixies here in the USA!

even if only for a brief moment on stage...

<sigh> you try so hard, even though you *know* there's gonna be secret shows in LA, you still miss out on the first one.

I got spares to the second one. Anyone wanna trade for one to the Spaceland gig?

Looks like the value of Winnipeg tickets just went through the floor....

There are still tickets for that Frank Black show *next Tuesday* in SF.... Couldnt that just as easily be a covert Pixies show?

Damn, its easy to spend the money for the tickets just in case, but I'm not booking flights or taking time off work until I'm at least 80% sure... Although a Solo FB show would be pretty cool too.

argh!

I can't believe the spaceland show sold out already! I thought that going to this show would make up for missing Winnipeg!

I'm more convinced than ever that this spaceland show is going to be the first appearance of the "pixies" or whatever they decide to call themselves that night.

a "breeders" show in LA at the end of March is just so very very suspicious!(the right place, at the right time)

I'm so convinced of it that I shopped for a plane ticket this morning, but was SO BUMMED TO FIND OUT THAT SPACELAND HAD SOLD OUT ALREADY!

argh!

it seems like my best chance of seeing the pixies live in on the dvd.

People talk about "the right place at the right time" ... but really, if Kim decided she wanted to calm her nerves and play a couple shows prior to the tour just to get herself warmed up, WHERE and WHEN else would she do it? They'll already be in California ... if she's going to do her own shows it will have to be sometime between now and April 14...

Not that it's quite the same thing, but when the Breeders were in Chicago recording Title TK a few years ago, she scheduled a couple of Breeders shows in Chicago too. Frank Black did not show up.

roomloo,

I see your point about "WHERE and WHEN else would she do it?", but the question remains, "WHY would she do it?"

Do you think kimmyd really needs to "calm her nerves"? I think she's played enough gigs in her lifetime that this wouldn't be a problem.

Plus, do you actually think kimmyd is rehearsing 2 different sets with 2 different bands, right before the pixies are going to be taking off on a massive tour??

I don't.

Frank Black did not show up in Chicago a couple of years ago, because they weren't talking to each other a couple of years ago.

THIS TIME, Black Francis, Joey, and Dave are all going to be there in town with her ALREADY rehearsing!

honestly, who knows what's going to happen? I missed out on tickets, so I should care less, but my gut tells me it's going to happen.

I hope everyone that has tickets has fun!

Yeah, dont forget, the Breeders currently are Kim, Kelley (who is supposedly not a very good guitar player and I doubt could show up for 2 one-off shows cold) and 3 rented musicians from another band (ie. who would not likely show up for 2 one off shows).

Face it, this has got to be Pixies. Or, it could be the Pixies jamming on Breeders songs. Either way is very cool. In fact, its cool that Frank would let these shows be billed as the Breeders, I imagine that shows a lot of mellowing on his part.

I'm not surprised it sold out fast-- what's the capacity of Spaceland, a few hundred? I'd think that would sell out quick even if people didn't expect The Pixies. I really doubt this is a Pixies show, but I think it's worth going to see the Breeders at such a small venue.

I dont think the frank black SF show will be a pixies gig, thats probably a sanity gig for him, he does have a new record himself coming out soon as well know. He probably just wants to roll out some acoustic diddies before he buries himself in pixie-dom. The place he is playing is not really capable of dealing with the fact it could be a pixies show, its a dive.

Oohhh, never trade a pixies ticket for a 'could-be-the-pixies'-ticket

that's a law, in fact, I think Newton came up with it.

But since they are spare tickets...
good luck
